    Hmmm it is smarter to eneble the 2.4Ghz guest network for your smart devices and isolate them from the main network. It is much safer. It is a nice topic for a video too.

      @@Behfor I have had one strange experience with this Asus RT-AX86U Pro router that so far remains unresolved. In setting-up an AiMesh with my old Asus RT-AC68U router as a node and then adding the Smart Connect Mode, I thought I would change the name it automatically selected which happened to have the distinguishing mark (5Ghz) added, to remove that as the 2.4 and 5Ghz networks were now combined. I realised that I was creating more work for myself and backtracked later to the original name even with the (5Ghz) misnomer. I still had work of course as many of my devices lost the original network and had to be set-up again anyway.
      Somehow, I am left with a 'phantom' network now which I cannot seem to delete (or see) in the Asus GUI. Ideas anybody?

    I definitively would use the SmartConnect to extend the range of my wireless network with 2.4GHz around the house, while keeping to 5GHz within the house. Adding a separate 2.4GHz guest network to each access point lets me connect each smart home device to the best access point once and for all. Although not gaining the isolation of smart home devices on a dedicated network.

  • @TheGuyBehindTheGuy

    Been waiting for a good explanation about this.
    I need to play with the signal strength. A weak 5Ghz signal seems to still be more than twice as fast as a good 2.4Ghz signal but then I lose connectivity on the 5Ghz for a second or two, just enough to mess with streaming.

    • @Behfor
      @Behfor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, with some trial and error and with the help of the WiFi analyzer app you should be able to find the best RSSI numbers to use in the smart connect rules. Good luck!

    It si only practical if the router has options to create rule for the smart connect like this router Asus you have. There are many routers in the market that don't have this option like Tp link and many Netgraer routers. In reality Smart Connect slows down the speed vs if you create sane name for your WiFi bands. Greate video though.

    I'm in the market for a consumer grade router like the RT-AX86U. I have a wired backhaul over MoCA and want to add commodity TP-Link EAP610s to the network. Would you recommend I buy Asus all-in-one's and use AI Mesh or just add custom APs?
    On one hand, AI Mesh seems nice. On the other hand I like the flexibility of a custom AP with a turn-key consumer grade router. It will help me upgrade to the new wireless standards and keep the system relatively fresh. 1gbps up/down. 2500sqft. 20-30 devices.

    Shouldn't you change "Less" to "Greater" in the STA Selection Policy for the 5Hhz band? I guess those are the conditions that should be met for the band to be selected? In your case, both Selection Policies will match when we trigger it for the 5Hhz band.

    • @Behfor
      @Behfor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Choosing a router depends on many factors including how much do you want to spend, how many devices are connected to the network and etc. But generally speaking because PS5 is WiFI6 then any good WiFI6 wireless router that allow you to do QoS is good for PS5.

  • @zenna5062

    Tried it for a bit, but it causes intermittent internet loss and connection slowdowns. It seems that when it switches bands, sometimes for a few minutes afterwards the connection to the internet will be inaccessible or i'll be getting speeds of 100 kbps or something for a few minutes until the speed spikes back up. It's really weird. Seems like a useful feature but if these issues aren't fixable i'll have to turn it off.

    How about smart home devices which connects to only to 2.4 ? Enabling this will make them go crazy …..

    • @Behfor
      @Behfor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normally they should only see the 2.4 GHz network and keep on connecting to that, however if one of the smart connect rules matches the condition of one or some of the smart home devices, then I'm not too sure how they would react. It's possible it might distrust their connection. You could create a 2.4 GHz guest wifi for the smart home devices though and never connect them to your main wifi. Thanks.

  • @trevorwesterdahl6245
    @trevorwesterdahl6245 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    SmartConnect is much better option. Really wish these "routers' would allow creating VLANS so you could separate your home network devices. For example, there is no need for my Nest devices/thermostats, or my cameras, or my lights, or my pool equipment, etc. to access any other device on my network. They should be isolated entirely. If you knew how many devices collect info they shouldn't and send it online, you would want this too.

    Hey behfor, quick question, I have an Ax82u with 160mhz enabled, how can I get the 2.4gbps that Intel's ax200 wifi card promises while connected to the Ax82u, I only achieve max 1.2gbps and was just wondering how to get the 2400 Mbps.

    • @Behfor
      @Behfor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Unfortunately the speed you see advertised on wireless routers and wireless cards is only a theoretical speed and in real world it's almost impossible to achieve that speed. If you read their description carefully they probably have mentioned it somewhere. So I would say 1.2 Gbps is a good speed and probably around the maximum speed that you can achieve with that card.
      I think I talked about it in this video:

All is well with the Wi-Fi but anything I plug into their LAN ports won't connect to the network. The advantage of using the 2.5G port as your WAN is that you get to have your whole Internet bandwidth, you just cannot use the whole bandwidth on a single user, and it gets to be shared between all the users, for example 2 computers can download 700 Mbps simultaneously. smart connect is still rough on a mesh network; just simply dont do it, you are solving the dead zones with mesh so smart connect messes with so many other things with roaming
    overall if you are using for single router then it doesnt keep bouncing back and forth on and keep you pin wheeling between a stronger 5ghz or a more stable 2.4 but very slow

After using Smart connect my device switches automatically to 2.4G after 5G signal gets weak. But 1 problem is that when I come again to 5G range my device is not switch to it automatically I have to manually connect to it. That's the drawback😒. My Wi-Fi Router is Tp-link Archer A9 AC1900.

      That'll depend on your network requirements, but overall it's a great router and I'm still using it for my home network. The only disadvantage is that it is dual-band and not tri-band, the 3rd band could come in handy in a wireless mesh network but if you don't wanna use a mesh network, then you don't really need the extra band. Also keep in mind wifi7 is coming out in about a year, so you might also want to consider waiting for that! But it's up to you. Good luck

      As far as I know that feature is available in the Merlin firmware [Tools - System Information] and not in the factory firmware, as least not right now!

    Can you turn off the wifi?

    • @Behfor
      @Behfor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The router used in this video allows you to disable the radio for any frequency band. You can find this option under the Wireless - Professional menu. Thanks.

      @@Behfor Thanks. I found out it before your comment, but thanks anyway. I also found out that you can toggle between "Activate WPS" and "Toggle Radio" mode under Administration - System menu for the WPS button in the hardware itself.

    Thank you for the great info. I been using AC88U. For my case, once awhile my laptop and phone devices unable to connect to the router for an unknown reason. So I have to disable the smart connect and all the devices can connect normally. My opinion, it a great feature but no idea why there is some weird problem that cannot be solve even restarted the router.

    That is cool IF the devices in question can Even see the smart connect single unified network ID. Unfortunately, most of my devices and especially my sister's work lab top smart connect unified network is invisible to her laptop so it won't be used. I am looking to replace my over 8 year old Asus router with a stronger faster router model before it fails and this is one of my top two candidates. I bought and returned the trash the Tp-link Deco X55 wifi mesh router. You must use their obuse, wonky TP Link cell phone application. There is ZERO I mean Zero access to the Deco X55 through a Web browser interface, so if your cell service is down or your cell phone is broken you have zero control over the DecoX55. I will not use any router regardless of the brand without Web Based interface access, I should be able with RJ45 cable or wirelessly access my router through any web browser. On top of the fact that two of the three Deco X55 units were broken 👎 back to amazon. In each video, I see Asus RT-AX86U I am getting closer to purchase. Have you thought of doing a video on the AI mesh system features? Thank you for a great video.

      @@Behfor BTW I bought the Asus RT-AX 86u last night since I am a prime member I get tomorrow. It looks like a good traditional router I am use to working with so the chances for success are 100% better. Thank you for your great videos 👍😉😂👍

    Hello brother
    Can i connect mesh nodes via switch
    Primary with modem & then all slaves to switch??

    • @Behfor
      @Behfor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The last time I tried it was not possible and the nodes had to be directly connected to the primary, I even asked the question from Asus support back then and they confirmed it is not possible. However, that was a couple of years ago and I'm not sure if this has changed or not. Thanks.

    Smart WIFI isn't optimal. It's for people that don't know how to change networks, lol. Just because you get more bars doesn't equal better speed. Smart WIFI goes by bars.

    Just bought and returned 2 of these. ASUS support tech changed so many of my settings that we could only achieve 1mb download on a 1GB connection. Couldnt reverse the settings then told me a second level tech would call in 2 days. Never happened. Returned them to best buy and bought an Eero mesh system that works beautifully not like this asus piece of shit
