True story, he was in a metallica cover band in HS. He played a lot of these songs in this concert and Dave Lombardo played a few too. Lars was sick that night and thankfully those 2 filled in.

The drums really don't fit well with the guitar this way. Basically drums and guitar are there to balance eachother out, not compete with eachother (all the double bass and unneccesary fills). It doesn't fit Metallica. He's a good drummer though, just not a fit for Metallica

James' recovery at 4:55 was fantastic. Whole bands timing coulda fell apart when Joey rushed that fill, but they stayed in the pocket together like Champs. Absolutely fantastic job considering Joey had little to no practice with them prior to this
I noticed that too. That is NOT a song that is easy to suddenly realize where you are both vocals and guitar. That was insane for me, just shows how comfortable James is with a song played many times.
It sounds to me like Joey and James were locked in, Kirk was all over the place in that section and dropping random divebombs in to try and recover lol
Joey doesnt speed up. He plays on clicks and he holds it. As a live musician i can tell you, a drummer makes a difference. Once, in the rehearsal room, the drummer was sick but gave us a laptop with a digital drum track. It took 6 tries to lock in. They are used to lars rollercoaster drumming and now they are distracted by joeys precision drumming.
This was Joey's happiest day of his life, playing with his childhood heroes. He knew all of the songs because he learned to play drums with their records and played in a Metallica tribute band before he got in Slipknot.
Someone who can actually keep up with one of the best rhythm players ever, must've felt great for james, i feel like i can't help but feel like lars depletes from their live sound so much..

I've heard the stories of Joey being nervous. but as a drummer who was influenced a lot by Joey's drumming, you can tell he's nervous here. but he's an absolute legend for powering through and getting to play for Metallica!
That’s because most Slipknot songs are harder on drums compared to metallica so joey wouldn’t have a problem here. I think all Metallica songs are relatively easy for joey tbh. Plus lars kit is small so joey wouldn’t have a problem either way.
Metallica is my favorite band but Slipknot is a close second and Joey is absolutely my favorite drummer. Seeing this puts a huge smile on my face. RIP brother you are severely missed 💔
Idk how you could say he's hands down the best drummer ever with all the great players that are out there (Tomas Haake, Mario Duplantier, and Vinnie Paul are a few of my personal favorites, but there's even guys like El Estepario Siberiano who is really only known from his TH-cam videos but has some of the best chops I've ever seen...) I love Joey Jordison, he was awesome and an incredibly skilled player, but to say he's hands down the best ever is kinda crazy in my opinion... There's just so many amazing and influential drummers that I could never say one is hands down the best ever.
