I like that you cloned out the sky, the brightness was a distraction. The photo of Amanda enjoying nature was as special as you sharing the beauty of nature. Just *being* outside and appreciating the universe, I love it.
Using the tools in your box is what being an artist is all about. Cloning is one of the many tools we have in our kit during the processing end of image making - no complaints, just applause. It's what I tell my students everyday. Keep up the great work, and don't let Shainblum take your A1 away.....
Congrats to David Barber on his win I'm going against the flow regarding the removal of the 'pointless triangle' - it should have been kept in after all the water (creek, burn, river) has to flow through a clear(ish) a path through the forest and in your (modified) shot it simply appears. If you are not happy with the 'blank' sky put in one of your choosing or go back on one of those foggy days you love so much 😊
That pink jacket sure is purdy looks great in a lot of photos...love the first shot with the mini fall n the big one in the back ..peachy! I guess if something such as filling in a void is more pleasing to the eye why not do it. Great video Gav!!
Totally agree with the cloning. Anyone can capture an image of a scene; an artist (that'd be you) creates an image from a scene. It'd have done exactly the same thing. Banger images, too!
I would have kept the triangle but used bracketing to get the sky at the right exposion. Its just natural to see a gap in the trees above a waterfall due the river itself and hiding this way was a little strange to me.
"sorry about your luck Dave" - Amanda that was perfect! Absolutely love the two waterfall shots. The one with Amanda is brilliant, with wonderful detail and colour.
100% agree ditch the blown out sky. I did a similar waterfall shot at Swallow Falls in Western MD. Blown out sky ruined the shot. As always learned from you how to fix that.
I say leave in the triangle of pointlessness. Because cloning in foliage usually isn't great on scrutiny, and makes people scratch their heads about where the sky went in the upper valley. Much easier to make a custom vignette to push the eye out from the (now dimmed) edge, blended with the foliage in just the right, if subjective, amount.
If you were a photojournalist, I can see where cloning would be a big no no. But as an artists, you do what you need to do to create your vision. So I say live how you gotta' live. Love how the photo turned out. Would be interesting to see what it looks like without the clone.
That empty space that yoh fill in. That was a great idea filling it in with the green trees. Keep bring your amazing experience of landscape photography. Don't let the bugs bite you lol.
As for the "triangle of pointless" I tend to do the same when applicable. In the end photography is art and "creation" should not be a crime. Very interesting the duplication of waterfalls which I've never thought about, very interesting thing to consider.
I would love to see a video on your steps for processing that photo. I love the feel that your photos end up with and would be really interested in how you get the raw photo to the final edited version.
Entertaining and informative video! Loved the stacked waterfalls but, liked the one with Amanda even more! The added pop of color and human interest really makes it stand out.
For myself I wouldn't have cloned in the triangle, maybe burnt it in a little to make it less conspicuous. A great image though Gavin and I liked the bonus shot with Amanda too.
Triangle of Pointlessness HAD to go ! Lovely shot of Amanda in front of the falls. It might have been nice to see Amanda on that peninsula in front of the falls (in your yellow jacket not the pink one perhaps) to give it some scale?
When you cut to the scene outside of the truck, I initially thought that Amanda was being blurred out because she didn't want to be seen. Then when you cut to the close-up, her bug net came into focus. Great video!! You guys are terrific!
Beautiful images, Gavin, as usual! As for cloning out the Triangle of Pointlessness, my question would be: Why wouldn't you? It's supposed to be a pretty picture, not courtroom evidence! As long as you can make it look natural and believable, go for it.
I think sitting in the cold stream with nothing but hiking pants earns you the 'clone out what ruins the shot' privilege! And a gorgeous shot it was. Lovely shot with Amanda, as well. Cheers!
I LMAO at the beginning give away!!....anyways I really liked your shot at 12:40. I think it showcases the area very well. I'm torn between cloning out the area of pointlessness as this always seems present in a waterfall photo. This area is what I always struggle with and actually REALLY pisses me off, lol. The photo with Amanda is nice but I don't particularly care for any human add features in landscape photos and I'm speaking of the poppies in particular. I really liked listening to you analyze the composition and your approach about walking away from the main feature. I think this is a good way of getting over the first impression of excitement and then finally "chase the awe" looking for a spectacular comp. Very well done video Gavin!
What a beauty! And an angle I've yet to see from here, so very refreshing! I can imagine the surroundings would be fantastic for the Fall. Nice video and photo, Gavin!
Great shot of the falls Gavin. I think you should’ve left the triangle of pointlessness in. Loved the shot of your good lady in front of those falls brilliant. And I love my A7rii with the battery grip lol.. all the best
Love the composition and the final pics. I’m torn over the cloning, natural vs artistic interpretation. At the end of the day it’s at your discretion but I appreciate he honesty and insight. I do wonder how you hang around afterwards when wet to take more pics. You must be bloody freezing. I also love the entertainment factor of your videos, it keeps me coming back for more. I love Amanda playing the straight man/woman to your comedic character. Keep up the great work and creativity.
I like your final image without the white sky. As a visual artist, it is your job and prerogative to what you feel necessary to guide the viewer through your image with no distractions. By the way, it's called an "Artistic Licence". Keep up the informative and entertaining videos.
Of course you were right to clone out the 'triangle of pointlessness', you are a true artist. The image is gorgeous and so is the beautiful image you captured with Amanda in it. Thanks for a great video. You are very brave crossing that river too. I am a total wimp when it comes to slippery rocks and deep fast running water.
I love those images!!! I don't mind you added greenery. It takes up such a small area of the frame. Hey, it's not like you are adding snow, lol. Congrats to the winner of your camera. When you said you were including all seven batteries because all seven are needed I just about fell on the floor laughing. When you questioned Amanda about Christmas and she said it would be about Christmas when the winner receives the camera I almost fell on the floor laughing again. I love your videos. They do bring a smile to my face and I learn something too. Thank you!!!
I suppose you can add me to the “it’s ok to block the triangle of pointlessness.” With so much other processing like darkening certain areas, and the shutter speed smoothing the water out, it looks like a painting. As an artist what you fill your canvas with is your decision alone
I have and shoot with the r2. I think it works great for me! As long as you playing in photoshop. You could have dropped a sky in the background with a few clouds to match the overcast day. I like the picture with Amanda in it. Good thing you had her wear bright color.
I clone spots in the woods as well. It never fails to have a few bright spots that will draw the eye away if not dealt with. Unfortunately, changing the composition is not always an option.
The shot of Amanda looks lovely, also the photoshopped finish to photo #1 works very well since it’s subtle enough to not notice, in fact I’m not sure I would have noticed if you hadn’t mentioned it.
Loved this episode and the waterfall shots are very beautiful. My favorite one is the bonus shot with Amanda, that one is just gorgeous 😍 💕 Thanks a lot for the tips and inspiration as always 🙂
Hi Gavin: I don't have any issue with your cloning out the " triangle of pointless-ness". In doing so, it didn't material alter the composition. Lovely image with Amanda in the image. Cheers, Keith
If he doesn't want it send it my way i will try to give it a good use... Thx for you videos always a great pleasure to see the and have a laugh a learn with you two ❤️
Omg that intro killed me! Is it off that I really enjoy watching amandas’s face when you jabber on? I just always try to imagine what she’s thinking.. 😅you both are the coolest peeps on TH-cam 😊
Man, I’d love an A7Rii to compliment my a7iii. I’d use it for maximum detail in wildlife photos… You do you with the photos, you’re already using an ND, CPL, and focus stacking - might as well blend in a bit of trees as well.
You are right to clone that out. I would have done exactly the same thing. At least you're honest and not pretending you don't do it. Greats shots btw. Grt guido
Order My Book, it's BobbyDazzla www.fototripper.com/chasing-awe-landscape-photography-book-gavin-hardcastle/
I want to buy your book, but it is so expensive!
@@Martinez_Photos But are you forced to watch Square Space ads?
@@fototripper I know a big part of the price is the darn Canadian shipping prices. BTW, I really love your work!
Still enjoying my book.
@@fototripper Funniest thing you've ever said.
I like that you cloned out the sky, the brightness was a distraction. The photo of Amanda enjoying nature was as special as you sharing the beauty of nature. Just *being* outside and appreciating the universe, I love it.
That first image (with the triangle of nothingness!!) is a stunner - and yes, the cloning work well and looks natural. I'd do the same every time
Using the tools in your box is what being an artist is all about. Cloning is one of the many tools we have in our kit during the processing end of image making - no complaints, just applause. It's what I tell my students everyday. Keep up the great work, and don't let Shainblum take your A1 away.....
Nice shots. Yes, good choice cloning out the sky from the top, center of your frame.
Still can’t believe I’m the winner, thank you so much and looking forward to getting it, over the moon 😊
congratulations! 🥳
Yep clone out the triangle of pointlessness, why not, as you have shown, it makes a better image.
Congrats to David Barber on his win

A 'refreshing' take on waterfalls
But in all seriousness, it's great to have this channel to see the beauty of Canada and enjoy ad free content
No point having a blown out triangle in the image, totally justified post processing.
No triangle of pointlessness is much better & what a Gorgeous shot😍 And now we moss all lichen subscribe!
Absolutely love that image with Amanda in it. Stunning. My pic. What a great set of falls!
Totally agree with the cloning. Anyone can capture an image of a scene; an artist (that'd be you) creates an image from a scene. It'd have done exactly the same thing. Banger images, too!
Defiantly better cloned out, stops being drawn to the light...great image and walk through. Thank you 🙂
I would have kept the triangle but used bracketing to get the sky at the right exposion. Its just natural to see a gap in the trees above a waterfall due the river itself and hiding this way was a little strange to me.
Love your work Gavin, cloning was the right way to go
"sorry about your luck Dave" - Amanda that was perfect! Absolutely love the two waterfall shots. The one with Amanda is brilliant, with wonderful detail and colour.
Love that pic. Listening to your thoughts as you develop the composition is enlightening. ‘Shiney’ 😂😂😂
Keep the adventure going!!!
Amanda rocks. 👍
100% agree ditch the blown out sky. I did a similar waterfall shot at Swallow Falls in Western MD. Blown out sky ruined the shot. As always learned from you how to fix that.
Excellent shots. I love both. The mini waterfall and the cascade with Amanda.
Great shot with Amanda enjoying the beauty of the waterfall itself. Enjoy the moment.
If you were a photojournalist, I can see where cloning would be a big no no. But as an artists, you do what you need to do to create your vision. So I say live how you gotta' live. Love how the photo turned out. Would be interesting to see what it looks like without the clone.
Good stuff, Adam. Love to see your orton effect technique used on that shot with Amanda. The softness is really nice
Great video as always 👏🏼
That empty space that yoh fill in. That was a great idea filling it in with the green trees. Keep bring your amazing experience of landscape photography. Don't let the bugs bite you lol.

Beautiful shots uniquely captured. Probably best waterfalls to date .
The tree cloning worked. The lighter green on those trees makes it look further away. Good depth effect. 😊
The triangle of pointlessness is the best name for that area of most waterfall shots I have ever heard. I say clone it out and create a better shot.
I would love to see a video on your steps for processing that photo. I love the feel that your photos end up with and would be really interested in how you get the raw photo to the final edited version.
Yes, I’d like to see the ‘artist at work’ too!
Great composition and beautiful capture. I like the photo very much.
Triangle of Pointlessness HAD to go ! Lovely shot of Amanda in front of the falls. It might have been nice to see Amanda on that peninsula in front of the falls (in your yellow jacket not the pink one perhaps) to give it some scale?
Once you pointed out the 'triangle of pointlessness' I thought you made a good point about cloning it out....I fully support that decision...cheers!!
Stunning as usual! Yes, it was a good choice to clone the triangle of light..
When you cut to the scene outside of the truck, I initially thought that Amanda was being blurred out because she didn't want to be seen. Then when you cut to the close-up, her bug net came into focus. Great video!! You guys are terrific!
What an awesome waterfall photo! I loved it! 😲❤
Beautiful images, Gavin, as usual! As for cloning out the Triangle of Pointlessness, my question would be: Why wouldn't you? It's supposed to be a pretty picture, not courtroom evidence! As long as you can make it look natural and believable, go for it.
Spectacular! Absolutely spectacular! Love your videos, Gavin. Thanks for sharing.
I think sitting in the cold stream with nothing but hiking pants earns you the 'clone out what ruins the shot' privilege! And a gorgeous shot it was. Lovely shot with Amanda, as well. Cheers!
Always a joy to watch! Keep doing what you do! Clone or not it's up to you.

Yeah I need to get there right about now.
For sure I would have cloned out the Triangle of Pointlessness ... I'm with team Tripper
Great shot of the falls Gavin. I think you should’ve left the triangle of pointlessness in. Loved the shot of your good lady in front of those falls brilliant. And I love my A7rii with the battery grip lol.. all the best

I hope the comp winner sends you an unboxing video, as there’s all kinds of comic possibilities there. Great stuff Gavin!
I like your final image without the white sky. As a visual artist, it is your job and prerogative to what you feel necessary to guide the viewer through your image with no distractions. By the way, it's called an "Artistic Licence". Keep up the informative and entertaining videos.
I liked the cloning much better, I felt like the triangle of sky was pulling my eyes away from the falls. Great video and beautiful photo's as usual!
Thank you for getting rid of the triangle of pointlessness! Totally worth it!
I wish you ma y more amazing waterfall experiences. I love how you fou d the composition with that second waterfall. Great creativity!
To clone away the bright spot was a good idea. Really like the photo with Amanda facing towards the waterfall.
Wise decision to clone out the triangle. Otherwise the eyes go to that point.... Turned out to be a very nice shot !!!!
Oh what a great waterfall that is, beauty! Worth getting wet for I’d say…bonus shot was lovely of Amanda! 😎📸
I love those images!!! I don't mind you added greenery. It takes up such a small area of the frame. Hey, it's not like you are adding snow, lol. Congrats to the winner of your camera. wonderful waterfall image. def cloning out of the triangle of pointlessness! say same to myself now, when i see them ☺☺👏🏼👏🏼
Always enjoy your adventures Gavin. GREAT SHOTS!!!!
Came to this channel only recently and really enjoying the content. Might have to buy the book now...
I have and shoot with the r2. I think it works great for me! As long as you playing in photoshop. You could have dropped a sky in the background with a few clouds to match the overcast day. I like the picture with Amanda in it. Good thing you had her wear bright color.
The shot with Amanda is money!
Great video. Lovely images. Re the T of P, the eye goes straight to the bright spot. Clone away.
That was my absolute favorite video so far! Amazing advice!!! Please come to Albuquerque New Mexico soon! Well done!
I like the shot with the triangle of pointlessness exclusion. Definitely an improvement IMO. Anyway its your art, do it your way.
Handy that Amanda had bright pink jacket on, I loved both shots
It’s much better clone out, always enjoying your videos especially one with composition tips 😍🙌
I clone spots in the woods as well. It never fails to have a few bright spots that will draw the eye away if not dealt with. Unfortunately, changing the composition is not always an option.
Good move to fill it in!
Nice video, Gavin. Yes, clone when required.
'Triangle of pointlessness'...love it! :-)
The shot of Amanda looks lovely, also the photoshopped finish to photo #1 works very well since it’s subtle enough to not notice, in fact I’m not sure I would have noticed if you hadn’t mentioned it.
Gavin, you have become the ultimate fall guy 👍😝 Filling in the triangle of sky was the right choice, in my opinion 😃
Cloning out the wretched pointless triangle is what I prefer, too.
Great video! I would have cloned out the 'V' also and mention it in the photo presentation. Great shot!
That waterfall images is amazing, absolutely stunning 👏👏👏👏 and you was right to get rid of the patch of sky I have the same problem.
Loved this episode and the waterfall shots are very beautiful. My favorite one is the bonus shot with Amanda, that one is just gorgeous 😍 💕 Thanks a lot for the tips and inspiration as always 🙂
Lovely waterfall shooting. Liked that tree. Didn’t see your gumboots!
Banger shots, grand job.
Awesome as usual think the clone has worked a treat. I take it you focus on the four ground then then mid way then on the waterfall.
That's about right.
The triangle of pointlessness definitely was better cloned out. Nicely done
Wonderful photography and as usual very entertaining!
Awesome vlog Gavin. Loving the waterfalls 😊😊
Man, I’d love an A7Rii to compliment my a7iii. I’d use it for maximum detail in wildlife photos…
You do you with the photos, you’re already using an ND, CPL, and focus stacking - might as well blend in a bit of trees as well.
Cracking waterfall images and yeah filling in the horrible sky v works well sometime needs must mate and good content always
Clone was a good call. A sky replacement would be another option. Either better than doing nothing.
Very nice pictures. I to often let the waterfall fill most of the frame.
Clone for sure, Garvin…nice image
This time I did spill my beer. :) Oh, the power of something shi... shiny and with seven dwar... batteries nearly going for sale on Ebay.
I’ve never thought of clone the spot out before. I’ll have to try it now.
Had you not mention the cloning, I wouldn't have known.
I'd never do that! 😂😂😂😂😂 📷👍
What a stunning image!
Great shots. Lovely scenery.
You are right to clone that out. I would have done exactly the same thing. At least you're honest and not pretending you don't do it. Greats shots btw. Grt guido
