    I attended blue beret in 2012 , watching this brings back all of the memories and emotions from being on compound. I hope to one day make my return to the compound as a senior to help carry on the legacy of national blue beret.

    Very fun to see this and great to see this program still around and doing well. I attended as a cadet NCO in 1983. Seems some of it has changed. It's not one week at Ft. McCoy and then the next week at the fly in. I also noticed that the crest is much larger then the one we were awarded back then. It lookes like there are a lot more cadet officers attended than I remember. All in all, while it's easy for old folks like me to wonder about the younger generation, as older folks always do, but then there are always those young people drawn to organizations like the Civil Air Patrol that we can look to that can reassure us. I will say, without a doubt, it was my time as a cadet, as a beret and as a cadet officer that made my active duty experience a smooth transition.

    • @skylarcaldwell7208
      @skylarcaldwell7208  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Carol Griffith I have gone through basic training thank you. You think that rangers and special forces are the only ones that wear berets in the entire world? Beret does not equal special forces. And no one in this video is claiming to be special forces. In CAP the blue beret dates back to the 70's. And in the Air Force, blue berets are worn by Security Forces (military police.) in the Army, everyone wears a beret... literally everyone. So no, it doesn't signify special forces... and it's not green so it's not like these cadets are trying to imitate a green beret.

    • @skylarcaldwell7208
      @skylarcaldwell7208  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Carol Griffith And we make a big deal about it because it's an activity for youth, many of whom are too young to yet join the military but want to be involved in an organization with military structure and discipline. Many of these young adults are going to be tomorrow's leaders. Some have gone on to be astronauts, one former cadet became the first female Thunderbird pilot, and many cadets have gone on to join the military and die in the line of duty. CAP isn't claiming to be military, it's a cadet program to help train young adults to be better leaders in this country. It's a lot better program than boy scouts, I did both, believe me. But do you dog on boy scouts because they earned a badge for doing a cool summer activity? This is the same thing.

    • @skylarcaldwell7208
      @skylarcaldwell7208  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trev's tLog that’s not a regulation unless your on a military installation where military regulations may dictate when not to wear hats, but even in the case of the military hats on the flightline are “conditional.” I work on the flightline in the Air Force and wear my hat when the sun is out and no engines are running. Anyway, it has been determined for safety it’s better for the cadets to have their hats on, the sun is a killer at NBB, but cadets are trained to be aware of when it may not be safe to wear a hat. Cadets have worn hats at NBB on the flightline for many decades with no issues :)

    Are there any official cadet grade requirements? Or does a higher grade just make an application more competitive?

    • @skylarcaldwell7208
      @skylarcaldwell7208  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are no rank requirements to go to Blue Beret, you just have to be 16 and have completed an encampment. I’ve seen cadets there with ranks as low as C/SrA.

      I heard its more geared for high ranked cadet NCOs or Officers. You will mostly see cadet officers but occasionally NCOs

    • @skylarcaldwell7208
      @skylarcaldwell7208  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no rank requirement. The only requirement to go is completion of encampment and be at least 16 years of age. The formula that is used to calculate scores to select people to attend NBB is the same formula used for every other NCSA. National Headquarters selects who will attend, NBB does not have a say. That being said, every year nearly 700 people apply for NBB and only about 150 can be selected, so there are more older, higher ranking cadets that score higher on their calculated selection score. Every year however, there are usually a few junior NCO's, and I've even seen a couple C/SrA. Some of the items that will score you high for selection are age and previous NCSAs. For example, a 19 year old cadet who has never attended an NCSA before will likely score high because they have limited time remaining to attend an NCSA. And with 700 applications, there are a lot more 19 year old cadets applying than apply for say, MARC or one of the many flight academies every year.

    I'm in CAP and I have heard many different stories and I just want some clarification if you can help. So are you allowed to wear the Blue Beret outside of this NCSA? I've heard you cant wear it unless you make some qualification or you can't wear it unless a wing, region, or national command says so. Thanks, and hopefully the following year I have the time to go to NBB.

    • @skylarcaldwell7208
      @skylarcaldwell7208  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, the official answer can be found in CAPM 39-1 section 9.2.3 which authorizes the wear of the blue beret in the BDU and Corportate Blue uniform as prescribed by National Blue Beret. So if you earn the Beret at theactivity you can wear it at any time in the BDU or Blue BDU, unfortunately at this time it's not authorized in the ABU unless at the activity. There are some commanders out there that do not allow the wear of the Beret in their Squadron, while they do have the authority, I personally believe this is an overreaching and unnecessary use of their authority, because National Headquarters has authorized its wear nation wide.
