- Setting up for the Colorado Crossings event involved a pretty neat move that I captured on video. 491 plus 11 cars, up the 3.5% grade, in a curve. Dusty had to have it wide open briefly to get things rolling.

491 popping her safety and then shifting like that when finally moving almost feels like her throwing a fit at the brakeman for taking so long lol.
Yeah I’d say she seems a little feisty for an old girl lol
491: "We go forwards *now*."
Props to the engineer for neither slipping when starting nor smashing the cars when knuckling into 20
The ol iron horse digging her hooves in and showing what steam power is about, she may be small, and have small wheels compared to the glory locos of the steam era, but she's no slouch, Love the 491.
JESUS THE CHUFF
CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF
She is working HARD!
i think she broke a sweat over those cars.
"We die like men, over"
Hyce, sometimes you find people that truly love what they do, can see it in your eyes and in your voice. It shows in your excitement in passing your knowledge to others. Keep up the good work
I love how the engine crew was basically telling her that shes got this goin' up the grade. :)
"Not sure why you're worried: I did this for 30+ years up Cumbres."
@@sawyerawr5783 "Shear willpower will get this sandwich up the grade damnit."
@@SeanJAnimations willpower and pure spite. Which is like half of what kept the NG going.
@@sawyerawr5783 lol
Loved hearing and seeing 491 being loud and proud!❤
You know, ive always been more a fan of standard gauge steam power, especially the Pennsy, but lately ive been getting more and more into these outside frame narrow gauge locos. They have so much charm
they OOZE charm. From every bearing surface.
@@MK.5198 I think that's grease.
Have you /been/ to the East Broad Top RR, in Orbisonia, PA?
Not the K37 sandwich we expected, but it's the K37 sandwich we never knew we needed.
Also, "We die like men, over." needs to be in the eventual merch lineup. Lol
Merch lineup, nothing. I wanna pull a sound clip and program it as radio chatter in an HO-scale engine.
@@BrooksMoses Dooo eeet! Lol
God dang, that shift is noticeable, let's go 491!
I saw the engine shift right away by watching closely the patch of gravel by the signal post, she kicks over a good inch or two which indeed must feel profound when it happens under your own ass. Very neat to see an old engine like this really give her all and work at maximum capacity, I'm sure all the men who made her are smiling wherever they may be.
Damn that was cool watching Peaches set her teeth into that hill without even thinking about doing a burnout. Even with everything wide open. !!!!!!!
My favorite part though was at about 6:32 when the chuffs of steam started popping out of the otherwise clear stack. I don't know if that's a good thing to see or not, but damn it looked awesome.
Thanks for the video!!! :)
Really cool stuff! You do a good job of sharing the fact that there’s way more to steam-powered train handling than most people would think.
There's nothing I love more than hearing the sound of a locomotive really working really showing people what a steam locomotives all about and what they're capable of doing their job just as good as they did when they rolled out of the locomotive plants. I hope maybe someday. 491 will get to visit the old stomping grounds at either C&TS or Durango and Silverton and reunite with her sisters. With 492 undergoing a rebuild right now It would be so beautiful if we could get the three k37 sisters together again. 491 492 and 493.
When she shifted like she did, that felt like her shouldering a heavy load, almost like a human would.
You have such a cool job, Hyce! Very nice stack talk from 491 shoving all those cars up the hill.
I originally imagined 491 would be in wheelspin city with a train this heavy and going full throttle right off the bat.
That was awesome. After she put her back into it I cranked the stereo and that just does not do it justice. Wide open with sand and she just walked it. I thought shed slip if wide open, but I guess not.
Hyce and Dusty need to travel the world and run more engines. Their smoothness is amazing.
This was the icing on the cake for my day today. A Hyce upload with a historic moment after I rode New Hope & Ivyland #40. All on a Saturday. Thanks for making this day that bit better.
That was pretty cool to see. I was riding the Durango and Silverton and I can’t remember if there was a derailment or if they just had like a hotbox issue but they stopped on one of the steepest sections of the line. The noise that engine made getting the train going again was incredible.
Nice stuff!
That safety valve pop was just her way of saying "How dare any of you doubt me. And how dare the brakeman suggest we'd leave half the cars here! No, we go now, we go with all of them. I'll show them, I'll show them all!"
491 was like finally your giving me a challenge
I can tell this is an absolutely straight-laced, _completely_ professional operation.
/s
It's cool, We hope one day the museum can expand so the tracks can go further and 491 can really stretch her legs one day.
I love it here so much, I was saying "come on 91, come on girl" thinking im crazy
till i heard yall doing it too
Man, 491 shifting like that was crazy! Also, how much she works by herself show how the D&RGW got a lot out of having a powerful 3ft gauge loco.
Also noticed that every time that Dusty applied the air brakes that he signaled with two whistle blows- was that standard practice for all railroads during steam days, or just the D&RGW?
491: I’ve pulled 3 times the amount of cars up Cumbres by myself! I won’t break a swear
Seriously, I LOVE hearing engines work their hardest
My lord: that stack talk as 491 was starting on the hill gave me chills. That was amazing.
That was epic. My favorite sounding locomotives are the old roots supercharged 2 stroke diesel EMD’s but wow these engines come in at a close 2nd place for me when under a load like that. So good 👍
ah yes the ES&D famous radio sign off "we die like men over"
I'm not even a train guy but those first few slow chuffs when restarting, frisson! Great stuff as always, Hyce!
Yaay peaches finnaly gets to work her firebox off and have a bit of fun
Bro when you zoomed in on the slide on the locomotive 😮that must have felt insane inside her cab
Before you went up the hill somehow heard Kan’s voice in my head asking if you’ve done the calculations for the load.
She had her fire to do the job, thanks to you Hyce 😅💪🏻
If ever I need a stack or expensive firewood for a fancy party, you’ll be the first that I call. (Rusty to split it, you to light it 🤣)
*Dusty. (Siri’s autocorrect can’t even spell autocorrect. 🙄)
Nice stack bark I expected traction would be a problem considering load, curve, and 3.5%. That’s steep. Good job!
Hi Mark that was sooo fabulous! OMG the 491 shift was wow! What a great moment that must have been in person! I so love 491’s sounds just amazing. Thanks Professor for this amazing video, and a shout out to Dusty too for a fab ride. I only wish I could be there. Cheers!
That was awesome to watch, nice to see these old girls still showing off every now and again.
Can't wait for the next RRO vid, been building a new layout with a friend on their save, and can say that we have a 3% line running from the freight depot all the way to the coal mine. It goes around the mountain peninsula to the south of the depot, and over the gap that you and Kan's switchback starts. In total the trip to the coal mine takes 5 mins. or so, and my friend did the trip with 20 cars of beams at 17 mph.
Wow, atta girl 491.
Awesome video Hyce!
Now this is what I call precision railroading! Would have been cool to see this switching operation in person also was Peewee helping to do the work too?
God the sound of the 91 absolutely powering up that grade must have been deafening you guys are absolutely awesome
Nice video Hyce
491 worked hard up that 3.5%
that sound when 491 got moving was a great sound
"11 Cars, wide open!" i had to say it
i will take the limes if it has to be limed
The diesel 4 cameo at 4:23 just made me crack up. 😂
It seems you were actually working 491.
Idk if its just a phase, but now I want to work at the CRRM, it'll take a couple years if I do, but as of right now I want too.
Hyce, I didn't realise that locomotives did that "shifting" effect. Thanks for the explanation.
Let's see if this registers on the Richter scale😂
Man. That sounds beautiful
A video idea if you have not already done it is to show us where you get the water from, how you treat it, and how you read conductivity, Oxygen scavenger levels, Polymer levels, etc. to maintain the boiler water. :)
Bet Peaches was a Happy Ole Girl that day
The power of steam .made my day thank you
I knew she'd do it all along, with all the freight she's hauled in her day I doubt she'd let something like that hold her down. 😂
One day I’ll make it out to Colorado to see y’all at the museum!
Also 491 wants to be put back to work after 60 or more years she's probley like yay I'm finally doing work
I swear steam locomotives are like one of the most powerful things I have ever heard in my life
I think thats the first time she worked so hard in a while, i love those chufs!!!
MUSIC!!! Sweet stack talk!!!
That was awesome to see the engine shift, she did good.
Drama at the loco, brakeman just see “here it comes”. Same event, two perspectives. I love it. Make her work, she loves it too.
I heard that "This one goes to 11" there in the back ground
Awe listen to that bark hood Ole 491 congrats on 70k
Big Chuff, like the reading, kinda, now you just need to get out of the circle and drive a big train on a long straight track.
491 May be old but she is still running and she dosent care how heavy the load is she wants to do work
Truly great video
I’m not as much of a train expert, but the damn chuffs 😩
Way to go 491 good job
5:46 I never seen a steam locomotive or anything other train does that it's almost like I alive that's crazy and cool
the sound
491 sounded pissed when she started off with all those cars. she was enjoying her retirement, then you had to actually work her.
If a locomotive could curse, 491 would be throwing you through the ringer and back again, those chuffs sounded so angry
I love that its called No Aqua XD
Hype I wish I could see you
Awesome video, don't see footage like that every day.
One must imagine Sisyphus happy.
I make the argument most times that the k classes have some of the best stack talk there is and even though I will forever die on that hill, that just solidified it more.
What do mean I’m biased towards the Rio grande narrow gauge I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Might be the one time 491s superheater did something lol
491 is a beast
the camera really dosn't do the earsplitting sound of a safety valvue justice.
That is cool
We need 491 on railroads online
Yea
A-LA-MO-SA! A-LA-MO-SA!
Amazing
First (Awesome performance from 491! Wish I could have seen that!)
Pretty sweet. So when will we see 491 going up Cumbries?
Get it 491
PURE UNBRIDLED POWER!!!!!!!!!! lol
Unlimited Power!
What is 491's max pulling weight vs what she was hauling in the video? Just curious how "on the edge" this was. Excellent video, not a train guy, but I stick around for your sheer passion alone. :) Cheers!
ALL THE CHUFFS!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, peaches is actually being nice today.
Nice
600 ton Train 🚂
that was awesome! well done guys. Off topic but what brand are your overalls? I like those strap attachments.
Carhartt.
@@Hyce777 thankyou.
Could you please make a video about the weight capacity 491 can pull and more of its history.
It has been raining a LOT in Colorado this past week.
@HYCE 491 wanted to boogie when she kick to starboard side
Nice.
