In other words, game engines are perfectly capable of rendering lighting, shadows and the player's camo pattern from far away. The reason that they don't and enemy players look like black/brown/gray blobs in the distance is because the devs are intentionally making them pop out with fake lighting and other effects. Good to know, thanks for this video.

I love camouflage so much and it always makes me sad when video games are designed to make camo not work. I understand for balance, but it's still a lot down

im actually working on a game right now that utilises camouflage in a multiplayer setting.
im always surprised that the metal gear camo system didnt end up becoming a standard feature in games afterwards.
having said that, camouflage is hardly that effective in reallife either

I can't believe it either. It's a phenomenal mechanic, specially in the way it was used in Snake Eater, imo. Lots of interesting ideas with the concept, both in single and multiplayer environments.
Btw, I would love to know more about your project. For a long time I've been thinking about creating a game with that focus, but if you're already doing it, I would support yours in a heartbeat.

Source of camouflage being hardly effective, boss?

Cool. Need more of this. What about themes close to Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon? There are some good channels about game developing, different tricks on programming and techniques to achieve some nice effects like Coding secrets and this one ). Keep on.

Would it be wrong if I said I rather camouflage actually work in a video game. Especially in a pvp setting.

why do games do this though? since visibility or camouflage works for all players, would adding some stealth be so unpopular?

Good question, I should have put this in the video. Some games, especially milsim games like ArmA, don't do much to make camouflage less effective. The milsim crowd tends to like punishing games though. In general though most players don't enjoy getting annihilated without seeing anything. Games are most enjoyable when there is a clear path to improvement. When you can atleast see who shot you, the game feels less punishing.

IMO if a game tries to be too realistic without any "helpers" (be it stuff mentioned here or even UI like dots above head) your awareness will be a lot worse than it would be IRL.
The best example of this, for me, is Tarkov. I love realistic tactical shooters yet this one turned me off. One thing would be identification of friends. Even the best monitor won't allow you to see if this silhouette over there needs shooting as easily as you would if you were there yourself
Another thing was that when playing with teammates, we could loose each other in a second if we didn't tell "hey, I'm moving there" - something that wouldn't happen so much IRL, as you have a lot less spatial awareness in games.

The rise of competitive gaming has created a much different standard for mainstream FPS games, and camouflage is perceived as an annoyance that doesn't test mechanical skill.
As long as the stealth gameplay doesn't become excessively overreaching into all aspects of gameplay, it might be accepted as an engaging part of the game. For example, CoD Modern Warfare 2 had excellent stealth with ghillie suits, if you were to hide in some grass with one, you'd be near impossible to see. However, you could only use it with a sniper rifle, not all maps were effective for ghillie suit use, firing your weapon revealed you on the minimap so you couldn't stick around in the same spot forever.
