- Peter Bond has had a highly distinguished career in the symphonic world. He’s widely known for his role as a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra since 1992 and has recently retired. Prior to his appointment to the Met, he was Principal Trumpet of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra (1987-92).
Peter has an unusual background for an orchestral musician in that his formative years were spent in drum and bugle corps, big bands, and even the circus. He began serious study of orchestral playing while doing graduate work at Georgia State University in Atlanta with John Head, Principal Trumpet of the Atlanta Symphony. From 1980-87 he enjoyed a busy freelance career in the Atlanta area, and continued to studied on an “outpatient basis" with Chicago Symphony legends Vincent Cichowicz, Arnold Jacobs, and Adolf Herseth.
His new book “The Singing Trumpet” presents a fresh perspective and a unique way of playing based on using speech and song as literal models for brass performance. We love this book and feel The Singing Trumpet should be in every serious trumpeter’s library. It’s published by Carl Fischer and can be purchased at www.carlfische.... This book is 184 pages in length and presents interesting concepts in the first half and then puts theory into practice with practical exercises designed to improve all aspects of your trumpet playing.
In this fascinating interview Peter shares some of his personal teaching techniques, discusses dysfunctional embouchures, staying in shape and much more. Check it out and enjoy!
Fabulous discussion. Thank you, all.
Great, great stuff. So self-aware in his playing is Peter Bond. Much, much appreciation for the insight into masterful experience. Just gold for those of us trying to re-discover our youthful brilliance on an instrument that is so poorly understood, and ironically with a wealth of pedagogy.
This is really excellent commentary on trpt issues that l've been exploring for my most recent years. I believe these concepts hold true and are extremely helpful! I will have to check ✔️ out the book. Thanks 😊
My copy has just dropped through the door here in the UK, first impressions are it is an excellent book. As a not so young amateur (60 +) I've had issues all of my playing life. Armed with the book plus guidance from my teacher, I'm looking forward to a new part of my journey with "A Bit of Plumbing'.
More about playing smart. Great stuff.
