You can also disconnect the stand from the boom and use the boom part as a handheld boompole! Doesn't work as well as a real boompole, but it works when you're on a budget.
I've owned an audio recording studio in the not too distant past. I'm using those mic stands from that inventory all the time now in my video productions. I've wondered if other video creators did the same. I use it to holdup green screen, back drops, lights, etc. Caleb, you're a genius! Thanks for the vids.

Recently I used one as a table top overhead camera (small gx85) stand. I have a 5/8 to 1/4 adapter that also swivels -- good for demonstrations. If you don't have a sandbag handy, some gaff tape will help hold it to the table, as well as a just in case for the boom arm. I also have used them as reflector holders -- a spring loaded microphone clip helped with that setup.

It's funny you make this video because I've been doing this for a while now. I don't make a ton of videos at home but I leave my mic stands set up and ready for when I do.
Interesting that you have gone for this option. I have gone the other way - using lighting stands and light booms for holding mics. The reason is that so many mic booms droop (they do that on stage with mics on too). I find that the cheap lighting booms that you get on eBay are far less likely to droop. I use a low level lighting stand with a long flash bracket and I can get a couple of cardioid condenser mics on it for stereo recording. Either way, I think using the same stands for both uses makes sense.
Another good way is to use it as a teleprompter, you can put some soft foam furniture leg protectors on the end of some clamps, and use the boom extension as an arm to clamp the ipad too. Works wonders.
audio guy here - 2:35 - NEVER spin the mic around to mount it! Hold it securely in one hand, unscrew the thumbscrew on the boom arm and twist the boom from the handle at the back. Tighten thumbscrew and you're done.
Great tips. I was thinking if it was possible to use a Rode boom arm to make a kind of Jib since you can twist and wrench it and make it do a lot of fun.
Great ideas for alternative mic stand uses! I used one mic stand to create diffusion in my latest shoot for an interview and it worked a treat. One thing though, you didn't mention how to hold the white boards to the mic stands!?! ;)
I have a laptop tray that attaches to a mic stand. I use it to position my laptop directly behind my camera as a poor man's teleprompter. This method doesn't require any special prompter software either. I just type my text into Word, change the page color to black, the font color to white, and enlarge the font size to about 40. From there it's just a matter of having someone scroll for you using a mouse.
I use it sometimes to adjust the focus: put a piece of colored paper at the end of it, adjust where my head will be, than focus the camera... start shooting... go in front of the cam and start performing... if you do not have a fiend :-)
The standard thread for microphone attachments and accessories is 5/8-27. This is what you should look for when buying adapters and such. Example: 5/8-27 Female to 1/4-20 Male for the one shown in the video.
Quick question, I use a mic stand for my IPhone X to capture video for an over head view of my brother playing the organ at my church. Question I have is, how do I stop the vibration from getting to my iPhone footage? When I record, the video is very shaky.

Hello! I want to start filming, mostly cars (museums, some events, car tests and the process of reparing cars) for my blog. I have a NIKON 5100 with a AS-F NIKKOR 18-105 lense, a Camrock Spider Rig, some class 10 SD cards and 3 batteries. I want to also buy the MOVO VXR4000Pro mic that You have tested (its quite cheap and has nice bass - very important to me). But what next? There is so much stuff out there, im watching all those TH-cam movies about this and it makes me crazy. Could You pleas recomend smth ? Anything, what lenses i should choose for that cam, should i change the cam? Maybe another micro? What could help me doing shoots like these? Whats the best cheap or free program for editing (i have the VideoPad Video Editor for now)? As You see, i have quite cheap gear, thats becouse of the lack of money, but i have to start somwhere. I would be thankfull for Your help! PS Your channel is the best one of those i have found! So already thanks!
why not use regular light stands? (by this I am not referring to C stands) They are in the same price range and are specially designed for what you showed in this video.
Beware of the 1/4" 20 (male), 5/8" 27 (female) adapter screw on Amazon (Nickel Brass) if your using this to attach your camera and gimbal. After months of shooting, the screw snapped causing my camera, panasonic G7, and gimbal, Feiyu tech a1000, to fall and hit the ground and gimbal breaking. I've looked at so many websites and can't seem to find anyone that makes custom screws like this, but in a stronger material. Any suggestions anyone?

For example keep the product reviews and these types of production tip videos but also some vids where, for example, you make a 10 ep series about making short films like planning, script writing, and then, on the 10th, go out and make a short film. It would be great if you could give this a think and possibly do something like it?

i used table clamp mic stand for camera.. it works fantastic , is there way to use it for softbox ? i have less space inroom

For us we have one as a overhead camera, and two for a backdrop. We want to be portable. So this is our setup for it.
