i happened to catch him outside when we visited a few days ago. my bf went inside to order & i stayed in in the car with our old dog. i heard someone start to greet her & i look over & it was Mr. Coop. glad to see his handsome face in person. we chatted a bit & i couldn't help but confess we had just seen him the night before on this video! he was happy for the opportunity & the business. :)
Thank you for not being bothered by Phil’s so called bbq. Thank you for hitting the local known places to be. Cooper is one hell of a guy and the BBQ is top notch. Bow legged is a hidden gem that not to many know about. It is to notch as well
Grand ol BBQ's original location is actually the 32nd street spot. They closed it for a few years and opened up in Flinn Springs before re-opening the 32nd street location
The North Park location for Grande Ole BBQ has actually been there for many years now. They just reopened about a year ago because they closed during the pandemic and expanded to include the neighboring storefront.
Great video Jay, the food looks wonderful. I’m happy that you’re showing smaller businesses in San Diego, and the owners seem like nice people. Fantastic choice of background music as well. Thanks bro.
I always load up on the chimichurri when I go to GoB. Sunday is a great day to when they have the South American style BBQ going. The Lamb is also great.
Mr. Coops is on my San Diego BBQ list. Not sure where Lemon Grove is though. Bowlegged sounds like my kind of home Tx style BBQ. Cali BBQ not TX BBQ, but wings varied.
thanks for this. we watched it a few nights ago & went to Coop's the very next day! their jerk chicken may not be spicy, but goddamn is it good! i also really love their bbq sauce. it's on the sweet side, isn't very zesty, but there's something deep & complex about it that i fell in love with. it tasted good with all the meats we tried. Coop's makes my favorite sweet potato pie, so it's always a must! delicious brisket, too. looking forward to trying Bowlegged Bbq next!
You missed Smokin J’s at 14035 Midland Rd, Poway, seriously amazing . Their pork belly is TO DIE FOR, they smoke their meats for 12-16 hours overnight so it’s super tender. I found about it when I visited for a haircut at my aunts shop. Truly a gem❤
Smokin J's now has a second location in the Gaslamp with a kickass pitmaster, Rick Daniels who used to helm the much loved, but now gone, Iron Pig Alehouse in Pacific Beach.
Nice video. GOBA's NP location is actually the original. It opened about 6 years ago then they opened Flinn Springs 3yrs ago and GOBA NP closed for renovations for a couple years. Check out Space Kat Bbq on India St at Aero Club. They'll reopen after the new year and their que is legit
Jaycation! Really dig this bbq series butyoure missing El Barbeque. Hidden gem but been winning awards in SD Reader and so has chef Ami. They actually were part of grand Ole bbq. Great food and better people. Also, Mr. Coop is such a cool dude!
Another fantastic list of recommendations!! You need to give Oak and Anchor BBQ a try. They don't have a brick and mortar establishment but, they can be found at Lane Field Park down at the Embarcadero most weekends. It is veteran owned and operated and does not disappoint!!!! Cheers!!!!!
I still have to go to Grand Ole and Cali. Mr. Coop's is always good. Bowlegged is sometimes a miss with their ribs, but all in all good. We also go to Cali Comfort because they have the best beans and we used to get their Tailgater special to go all the time. Great job on this video, man. Keep it up! Maybe a (San Diego) National City Filipino food spots next time? That's my 'hood!
Probably been away too long bcuz was raised in Lemon Grove n Spring Valley areas n never heard about Coops til now. We were pretty much raised on Fargo’s BBQ, but NOT sure if they even exist anymore? Gna have to check them out next time I’m back home. YES, our fam orders @Cali BBQ take out often.🥰 Ahh man those wings look delicious!💕Enjoyed it.😍 Ty for sharing.😊
Wondering if certain markets that sell tri-tips sell bad ones that don’t barbecue properly for example maybe because they don’t have adequate fat and are trimmed too much or the fat is inside the tri-tip instead of on the outside making it oily and ugly?
These all look great! If you ever head back to the Phoenix area, hit up Little Mrs. BBQ. Would love to know how it stacks up against these places in SD!
Coop's is LITERALLY the BEST!!!! His brisket potato is my favorite and I could eat my weight in his greens. Grand Ole BBQ comes a close second IMO but only for their brisket, everything else is a no go for me. I was scared to watch this video because I'm all like if he says Phil's....... I'm never watching another video.
I love ya, bro... you've helped me find some real gems to hit up when we visit my mother-in-law.... but, I'm from Texas, man. You guys don't really have "bbq". There are some good places that are bbq-tangents, but none that really do it like it should be.
Mr. Coop is so down to earth, great interview
He is! Great vibes
