I was there, in the crowd. I followed this for months, going after work to check on progress. I'm a HUGE magic fan, and lived next to a magic legend, who got me into the Magic Castle (you can see my first visit in one of my videos). So, I won't explain everything, however, the crowd was NOT in on it. They filmed that portion 3 or 4 times. However you can clearly see the audience doesn't make an appearance after David is lying on the floor. I got to inspect the cart, and was the only person I saw REALLY looking it over, and saw a key part of the illusion. When David says there are no tricks from then on, the audience was long gone. This was filmed over 3 or 4 days, and if you lived in NF, it was no secret the helicopter ending was filmed days after I watched the first part. Finally, you can clearly see the camera edit when the camera zooms in on the mist. I lost a lot of respect for one of my magic heroes with this special. He lied to the audience. That isn't magic.
Thank you so much because i honestly thought he went over the falls and that the raft was a huge shock absorber and the jet ski was fake...., i noticed his wrists were already free when he laid down and i just looked closely and his t shirt is 100% dry...... The sad thing is that all his tricks are no real skill just camera lies
There are at least 4 cuts in the video, one evident is in the moment in which the zoom + blur is done after the raft disappears in the waterfall (6:18), so the part with the helicopter was shot at another moment, giving all the time to prepare it. But the most sensational is when it is framed close, there are two cuts and three different time periods. Before the cut, you notice a chain (3:01) tied to the pole under the assistant's feet, and also you notice that the band at the body is far from the belt buckle (3:05). In the next shot (3:09) the chain has disappeared, and in the next one again the buckle is moved and practically attached to the body band (3:19). PS The audience from the last cut, is no longer filmed, most likely is not present on the scene when he gets off the raft and can be the 5th assistant under the platform (4:42) ...
It's very simple. The legs and hands are fake. Who knows what happend before the cut at 3:08. He escapes at the side of the box right under the black guy's leg. (at 3:45) or maybe even through the bottom of the box. The camera angle is high enough not too see anything right under the platform. Then at 4:04 the camera angle raises so you can't see anything below the platform.
The helicopter is on their side out of view the whole time... They do a close up of David's face talking to the camera... At that time he drops his legs down and they prepare the fake legs... As soon as the capsule is on top of him David is gone immediately by way of trap door out to the left underneath out of sight running up and preparing himself on the helicopter... Then he Flies over the falls to the other side and waits for the vessel to go over Niagara Falls and then he simply rides backup to reveal himself... And yes those are fake arms and legs ..no stunt man could go over the falls in that yellow box they would drown... there was no one in there to begin with...
Then at 4:33 the camera zoom's out and suddenly at 4:36 there is a guy under the platform we haven't seen before. (looks like Copperfield himself???) He even gives a thumbs up! While the camera follows the platform Copperfield steps into a helicopter and shows up from the bottom of the falls. I'm sorry for any bad English.
I'm guessing he dropped into the floor of the platform somehow. Similar to his buzz saw trick, the platform is actually much deeper than it appears. The thickness of the yellow base, plus the wooden floor, plus the metal frames - all probably add up to be just deep enough to hide him if a hole or trap door was cut through them all. Also, if this was one continuous shot, there are moments such as at 2:30 where it cuts from a long shot to a close up - there was no cameraman right in front of him a split second ago, then it cuts to a close up of his arms getting chained as if the cameraman was standing right in front of him. When they place the coffin over his head, it looks like he is starting to drop down into the floor. Also, that looks like a mannequin hanging off the rope at the end, it never moves.
I think I got it. At 3:33, his head is not in line with the body it's further back. When then the yellow lid is lowered it is then hiding his real body? At some point he is lowered beneath the platform at that moment when it is out of view? (when camera zooms in and you don't see below the platform). As someone else pointed out the man underneath the platform giving the thumbs up looks like David Copperfield to me. Seems to have the same mannerisms as the show man. :)

Wow watch them wrap his wrists with the chain....hes never restrained.. Hes literally free before he lays down... Also with hos weight and the cage would havevto be 250lbs total....the guys didnt look like they were each holding 60 lbs.....more like 20 lbs or less per man

The trick is when the chopper drops off the platform, he does not entirely drop it because there is a second wire. that one holds the yellow coffin. Once the platform dropped, all copperfield had to do was get out of the yellow thingy (it was not REALLY locked, probably via a trap door within 2 seconds) and grab the rope that was hung down his safety wire.
You can see as they lower the box the last glimpse of his head lifts and slips off behind the box. At the same time down the other end you can just catch a glimpse of his foot behind the box for a split second. The whole leather clad body is fake and he is carefully hidden behind it.
He never planned to escape on the jet ski. He really wanted to go over the falls and he did. A safety wire was attached to him from the helicopter the whole time. That's the only way the authorities would have let him go ahead with the stunt. Once he went over the brink you never saw what happened after that; the camera was behind the falls rather than in front of it. He undoubtedly got out through a hidden trap door. Still a daring stunt though. There was plenty of margin for error.

When you see his helpers lower the yellow top, David lifts his head and ducks out. To the top right. Notice how the man in white blocks the view to the stairs. Hope this helps. The audience is paid staff. He then runs to catch a helicopter and the rest is history. That is my guess. The camera cut is there to distract you as he needs to replace his lower legs. Look closely. ;) that’s my guess.
