Batea is the spanish word for bowl or pan , and we call it batée in French . Thank you for the good work with your interesting videos!

The constant rotational swirling with light material going off all around the outside of the pan appears much more efficient than the one side tipping to let light material slide off that we here in North America usually see. Actually, with a batea, the material is constantly stratifying, not to one side and then another, but to one focus point at the bottom of the pan. Great and informative video, as always, Dan.

I have watched some content of artisanal miners using variations of that pan, some wooden some metal. Once again with your video I find the long flat intriguing. It makes good sense with a focused small low point and the long flat surface. I wouldn't however turn this one over and use it for a stool. ; D Nice happy, sunny video, Thank You Dan Hurd!

At 10:20 you got the swirling motion right with the simultaneous tilting. You can tilt it quite aggressively as the centrifugal force will keep the heavies at the center. Batea simply means "pan" and it is designed to process large amounts of material in a short time without having to clean out the pan each time. It does require a lot of water to work in because of its size and you won't find a wash tub big enough to try out at home. I live in Arizona and bought my batea years ago from a company in Vancouver as none are available in the lower 48. Thanks for posting this!

Looks like a great concentrating pan. You can work all of the dirt in a quick amount of time and keep the concentrates. I use the Pyramid pro pan, kind of the same concept. Blow out the and still build up the concentrates for the end of the day. Both of these look great for low water situations. Great video!

There is a blue plastic version of the pan available now that some metal rod type bits in the very center used for breaking up clay and clumps as you swish it around. If you had to work with clay and clumps it looks like it would be very handy. They say the blue color is optimum for observing gold as it is opposite in contrast on a color chart.

YFRC in the house supporting another fine member. As soon as you showed the pan, I could vision exactly what to do. I love the speed of it! At first, side to side stratification but after that, stratification would always be in a circular motion only. Personally, I think you did a fine job for your first time.

One of the miner i met in my country ,told me because of the materials that they panning consists hard dissolve clay.while they stratifying the materials. Periodically they use their hand/palm to smoothen/crush the small chunky clay materials, that might contains fine gold in it. That's why they use this pan instead of the riffle one.(i dont know it's true or not)good video, love to watch you prospecting gold.

Once again Dan, a superior video.
As I learned from Doc Williams, Costa Rican miners would use the removed top of a 55 gallon drum for their Bateas. The circular top would be heated and when very hot it would be placed over a hole in the ground and then formed (pounded) into the traditional long, flat cone shape with a small drop catchment in the very center. Of course the water in Costa Rica is quite warm so the very large Batea could help to support itself by partly floating during it's use by the panner who was also in the river as well.
Looking at the bottom of the pan it certainly wasn't heated well (for seasoning) - although a thorough cleaning with solvent or soapy water does the same thing.

Hi Dan the first gold pan i used was of my mates car we used one of its hub caps and found a few specks we put them in the foil out of a cigarette packet and when we went to the pub decided to show off our wealth opening the foil it pinged and our gold was gone, we could not stop laughing, gold panning comes in all forms always great .

  • @ralphf772
    @ralphf772 5 ปีที่แล้ว

You could speed pan with this in areas of fine gold as all the gold will go to the point in the pan quickly and then you can push off the waste on top and then dump the remains in the point into a regular pan to be panned out later.

Batea means actually gold pan. It's an italian pan, invented somewhere between romans and pre-romans emperor in northwest italy and that's the way we call a pan. Your pronounce its almost perfect: just there's "no air" going out your mouth on the final three letters "TEA", only gut sound like the first two letters "BA".. and "EA" is just two vowels sound not like "EyA".
cheers from Italy and thanks for your contents!

Oh something new😳 I've seen these used before But like you haven't tried one. I did make a similar pan with a small 1/4 in mesh screen in the bottom and a cup to collect the fines attached to the button. It works ok but not as fast as a regular pan but it was an experiment that someone else has since made and sell. Called a Focus pan and I believe they are made here in B.C. And as far as a flat pan goes, way to much work and I found it awkward due to it's size.
I would say It's your pronouncing it correctly.
Looking forward to hearing about the new claim. GL&HH

My intuition tells me that u could just keep filling the whole pan with water, shake it and spin it, dump, then fill the whole thing with water, shake it spin it, dump, repeat. Since the angle of the pans strongest gravity would be straight up and down. But I've never used one nor seen someone use one before. Lol

So envious that you can jump from one part of heaven to the next, and pan gold also. Clearly your new pan wasnt keeping the gold in the cental nipple, but that is because you switched panning style as the black sand came into view. Not a criticism as you hauled some nice keepers as the levels got very low. Thanks Dan, keep us smiling.

The BIG advantage is that the REAL wooden Batea's float so you can hold 20 lbs. of sand and hold it with one hand and it will not sink. You can get twice the work done and save your back! If it DON'T float is not a real BATEA.

In Australia in the early days of the gold rush metal pans were seasoned before use by placing them upside down on a fire until the metal showed the first change of colour. This was to burn away the last residue of oil or grease preservative on the pan. We remove oil residue from new plastic pans as well. Did you do anything to your Batea pan before you used it?

The builder of that pad said to swirl it in the water, not over the water like dan is doing. i wonder if some ridges on one small part of it would help?

    Don't forget the jet dry!
Btw.. That looks like a Wok. I'm going to go to a thrift store tomorrow and get a Wok and try it out on some fines.
    Thanks Dan!
    P. S. Double thanks for the locomotive clip. I'm a huge Railfan!

Hello Dan, my hero of the gold digger. Back then, I got stuck in British Columbia about your videos on the claim. Or how you show your claims. I think it's a shame that you digress something. Detect, dive and now even such an eotic washpan. I hope you return to your claim that you have processed with your BobCat. You built a rack for a big high banker ...Unfortunately, they then took the bridge away. But you found a way. These adventures were my favorite. How to get started with friends and family. And I stay with my washpan.Your faithful gold wash colleague from Bavaria.Greeting Goldjunge Tom

Bet it would be phenomenal if it were mounted to a shaker box scenario where it was oscillating. Then you could just shovel on the material and not wear out your arms!
Funny enough there was an add for something like that at the start of one of your vids.
    Always great watching!

From a Spanish to English translation - this makes some sense given the Spanish history with gold.
José levantó su batea del agua y vio una pepita de oro.Jose raised his washing pan from the water and saw a gold nugget.

Here I go again, swirling my phone to help pan out the gold. 😁 I like the batea pan in that I think swirling the pan is easier than shaking it back and forth. Might not sound like much but when you get to my age (OLDer), easier means a longer time at the river. Wonder what Dayna thinks of it?? Thanks for the lesson Dan.

Another incredible video. As i live in Australia your scenery is just so beautiful. Sadly though i noticed a dumped tyre at 16:00 . Why do people have to do this. When is the next three generations of Hurd video.

Looks like you did a good job for the first time doing it. You should take some home and pan it out in a safety pan just to see how much you are actually losing.

I think it's just a cultural difference, just like driving on the right or the left.
In Brazil we have both kinds of pan, old schoolers use the batea(called a bateia in Portuguese) while younger people use the green plastic one, also called a bateia but usually called a plastic bateia to distinguish the two. Just like older people love revolvers instead of auto loading pistols and some still swear by using the plumb bob instead of a spirit level when laying brick.
I'm not an expert but I think the difference in efficiency is negligible. I've read the Batea can use less water, but that's not really a concern down here since we have lots of water, it's not called a rainforest for nothing.
One advantage of the Batea is that you can make one out of anything, a piece of "tin", wood, an old pan etc while making an injection molded plastic might not be so easy.
For what it's worth these conical pans were used by early american prospectors near Mexico.

If they made then in 15inch models, they would simply be better in every way other than maybe needing deeper water than a regular pan.
