glad to see a perspective from another japanese like you. for me, high salary doesn't mean anything and is not worth it if the job gave a lot of pressure to our mental health. at the end of the day, it all boils down to how lucky we are in getting a job with high salary but also gave us the work-life balance that we all need. sometimes, we have to compromise with whatever we got. anyway, thank you for sharing the comparison with us and I hope you will have a great time living/working in Malaysia. looking forward to your next video, next week.

Some Malaysians had the imagination that "everything in Japan is much better". I am not saying the opposite, but as any country we all have our strengths and weaknesses. When some Japanese in our companies confessed that they liked working in Malaysia better, some of my friends looked very shocked. Most of the Japanese hinted it was due to the relaxed environment, either in office or Malaysia overall. But sometimes it is not all good, since those Japanese also slowly adapted Malaysian lifestyle, like going for cigarette/vape break a lot of time, or just having anytime-tea break during office hours like the locals lol.
Anyway, glad to hear your positive feedbacks regarding Malaysia! We're in the same field, I work in IT too. And ironically, Japanese-based one. But I could confirm 100% there is no Japanese culture or ethics implemented here.

I work in one of Malaysia's local bank.
I never work overtime. Always went home on time, even though my company do pay for overtime. But most staffs prefer to go home and spend time with family.
There is yearly increment in salary, bonus once a year (around up to 2-5 times of monthly salary depends on individual performance).
Unlimited medical benefits (this one is soo good). Because there were cases of cancer and other chronic disease, and my friends checked in at private hospitals and all expenses covered by company.

Also cost of living in Malaysia is generally about half that of Japan. So theoretically even if your Malaysian salary is 50% lower than in Japan, you will still enjoy about the same living standard. That plus better work - life balance makes Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia the top city for expatriates to live and work in a recent InterNations survey.

As a Malaysian who work as IT professional in Singapore, I think the policy, especially overtime, is really depending to your position and job scope. You might have to sacrifice your social life for higher salary with numerous OT, based on your job experience. My friends also suggested me to find other jobs with higher pay, but considered I have 2days office 3days home working arrangement, I am quite reluctant to change.
Regarding the job culture between Malaysia and Japan, I feel the main difference is Malaysia companies require manpower for business operation. Therefore, companies need to find some ways/benefits to keep the people. Secondly job hopping is a norm to people here if there is some dissatisfactory to job scope or company politics.
Lastly, thank you to introduce Malaysia culture to Japanese. 頑張ります!

Thank you for make the wise comparison. I really like how you made it sound balanced and non-bias. Regarding company allowance on employee's future... We do have in Malaysia. It is compulsory for company to bank in to employees' pension (EPF) account every months. Plus, compulsory health insurance (SOCSO) to keep us secure. I am not sure if foreigners are eligible for it or not. So although we do not receive much bonus due to competitiveness, we do feel relief in term of these matters.

I think the experience in Malaysia differs from different industries and companies. Your points are mostly accurate but Malaysian companies do a lot of overtime too. Or try and get you to work more for less pay/no overtime. The reason why companies don't want employees doing overtime officially is because they don't want to pay overtime. But you'll still get thrown a lot of work eitherway. And while it's mostly true that work ends at 5pm, no one really goes home at 5pm because traffic is horrible. People much rather stay in the office to avoid traffic. And public transportation here is so far behind compared to Japan that its not really an option for many too.
Just wanted to share out some thoughts.

I work in private company with super laid-back culture and family-friendly boss. We come for work at 9:00AM (30 minutes late is still acceptable) and can get back home as early 12:00PM as long we finished our task for that day. The boss prioritize employee's health and family (specifically parent, spouse and children) before work. If one of our family member are sick and need attention, we are not required to work and still get paid normally.

I work a lot of overtime in the US, but it's 99% voluntary and paid so it helps me reach financial goals and also the company meet objectives... and even so, going several days without overtime would not be remarkable. Very good explanation. How about the internship experience in Japan? In Malaysia most internship students are carefree and receive good treatment from the supervisor or boss. They can wander freely in the office and have lunch together with the higher ups. Only occasional brief sessions and task rotations in different department so interns here are often mistaken as real employees too. I wonder if Japan shares the same situation or do they have a more organized and strict internship schedule?
By the way welcome to Malaysia, Suna! Hope you make good memories here!

I've worked in 3 Malaysian offices in total (1 of which is a multinational corporation), and I agree that office culture is better in Malaysia compared to Japan. That said, I've known several colleagues who routinely work overtime (some till 12am every weekday) and their managers put a shorter deadline to accommodate.
I've also worked in a company where off days are routinely shifted around and going home before 9pm is looked down upon. Thankfully, I'm now working in a much healthier environment, but I've heard from friends working in factories where mandatory unpaid overtime with minimum wage is the norm.

My Malaysian bosses never treated their subordinates equally because they still practice hierarchy, especially those who have honorific title such as datuk or datin, tend to push blames to employees if bad things happened. Sometimes, when work is overloaded, we skipped lunch. Some bosses do scold people. Employees don't have much benefit if they are not permanent staff. Sometimes, overtime without being paid. Some have very toxic politic or culture, depends on what kind of boss they have. Salary aint much but work like a slave. I wonder if there's any difference between Japan and Malaysia work style. We called our bosses nickname because they must not be named. We cant say their names when we curse behind their back. This is called true Malaysian culture. The only way to go against our ridiculous boss is by calling everyone to resign together to sabotage the boss or report to the authority for abusing worker. If you have a nice team, it is like BFF. If you have a toxic team, it is like a funeral or warzone.
I think Japan and Malaysia are quite similar. Both type of bosses treat their employees like slaves or dogs. Just that in Japan, it is unlikely that you will get a new job if you resign within 1 year. And Japanese society is more strict than here, which is very stressful and suicidal. Here is also stressful if you're being fired and unlikely you will get a new job faster, because the interviewer will ask you why you leave the job and telling lies can be damaging to your reputation. In order to get a new job, we need to state our boss as referral in our resume, so we need to please the boss before we leave the company. There are a lot of social cues in workplace. So aint that easy.
Regarding salary, Japan emphasizes on seniority. But here is rather different. Most companies would rather find people who can work well with lowest pay as much as possible. 3 holy grail slogans, cheap, nice, and reliable. There is an old saying: "Lowest wage and f***ing reliable is the motto". There is little to no differences between foreigner's pay and local one.

The starting salary in Malaysia is not 800 USD per month. It is entirely dependent on your educational level. Your starting salary at the diploma level is typically between 215 and 430 USD per month. For bachelor's and postgraduate level, the starting salary is between 470and 765 USD per month. The majority of local businesses do not issue allowances, bonuses, or incentives; just a few multinational corporations do. In the private sector, career progression is quite unfair, since only the most productive employees get raises (around 5-10%). The sad reality in Malaysia is that the majority of us are still unemployed, destitute, and significantly in debt. Furthermore, Malaysia has a high incidence of petty crimes, scams, sexual harassment, suicide and corruption. Fortunately, our beloved Malaysia is still a peaceful country. Hopefully one day, we will have a better system and government.

You don't work for A Malaysia Company but a company which open an office here.
Therefore it doesn't follow Malaysia Companies culture. It just follow some which is under the Labour Law.
For Malaysian companies GLC for example or Berhad which is listed in Main Board the benefits, salary, incentive are better than what ever company you are working for.
For example fresh graduate working for GLC or Berhad can get about RM 5K/2.3 USD Per 1 RM.
That not including cola allowance etc.
There's a difference between Malaysia based companies and MNC whom operate in Malaysia.
You're working for MNC which everything is decided in HQ where ever it based.

Married friends in malaysia say that person who work in company has more stress than the spouse who work in government (no stress). I don't know if it is same in japan. In US and Canada, if you have government job you can be slacker and shun all work, nothing will happen to you because government cannot fire anyone except for crime. And in private company there, it is very political working environment. Politics is more important than performance.

In my opinion, nowadays many Koreans and Japanese work in SEA.
They feel happier working in SEA than EA.
Working in SEA is very relaxing, the cost of living is cheap, and they can eat cheap fruit everyday.
But not all company 9-5, some office (especially creative industries) do a lot of overtime.

There are some bosses in some industries who would scold their subordinates openly, especially in WhatsApp group, but not all. Generally bosses would pull an employee aside and reprimand them in person or behind closed door. I work in an industry where some of my bosses would scream at people who made mistakes, but these days, that generation already replaced with those who knows they shouldn't be doing that. Industrial relation officers plays big roles too because some of those antics could fall under harassment category, so many bosses these days would be mindful. I guess people just want tasks to be done by the end of the day, and there is no need of shouting if you could solve the matter amicably. Good bosses are the ones who would teach and guide their employees, not finding faults and scream.

It’s interesting people with more kids in Japan get a higher salary to compensate. In the US, it’s the opposite. A software engineer with 3 kids earns the same as another software engineer who’s single…just because they’re ranked at the same level in the company.

in malaysia, japanese people tend to get much better benefits, higher allowance & salary compare to the locals. Most of the benefits & allowance are only given to some of the top management staffs. to most bosses, locals are not worthy even they are "qualified" for such benefits & allowance.

For meal allowance, it's depends. For example, I have friend who work as sales man, he can claim lunch or dinner bill with company. Another example that the company I worked before provide drinks (coffee or tea) and snacks at office , we even have coffee maker machine. Or sometimes our boss will treat us some meals like McDonald.
