How-To: GM 3800 Series II Water Pump Install (Step by Step)

  • In this video, I go over a detailed install of a water pump in a ~100k mile '98 Buick LeSabre with a 3800 Series II motor. The gasket had started leaking near the bottom of the pump and the car had steadily been losing coolant till it became a larger evident leak. No overheating until the car had lost enough coolant. I had earlier misdiagnosed the leak as coming from the tensioner coolant elbow(s). These tend to leak in the same areas and the plastic elbows tend to disintegrate over time as evident when they were removed/replaced. This video covers the water pump replacement which fixed the leak. I used an aluminum framed gasket that came with the pump.

    great video, I really appreciate you fast forwarding thru the 10,000 1/8th turns on each bolt, I wish others would follow your example on that!!! Thank you, I would have never guessed that I would have to remove the freaking power steering pulley to get to that last bolt.

      @FuelSniffer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Steve for the response. I agree nobody wants to watch a bolt get turned slowly and its why you just see it cut out most of the time. The problem is it doesn't show the viewer what may be required especially to get into difficult positions if you don't have a larger variety of tools. I did this video while visiting my mother with her basic set of tools. Hopefully that inspires others on how basic this job can be with patience. The trade-off is extra time needs to be spent in editing which a lot of content producers on youtube either don't want to spend the time doing or understand how to do it.

    I found this video very helpful especially the two bolts on the power steering pump and dropping it out of the way as for the pit cock on the radiator I did not do that because I put a pan under the engine only dropped about a half gallon of antifreeze out of it didn't have to take off the top engine cover no need other than that excellent video

    Where exactly on the pump does the inch and a quarter bolt go into . I tried the farther on the left bottom of you are facing the pump and it seems like it will go in about a third and bind . Kind fraud to go any farther. Sm I putting it in the wrong place?

  • @aktrapper6126
    @aktrapper6126 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you use any thread sealant on the four larger bolts that you call 1/2 inch but really are 5/16 inch and take a 1/2 inch socket? Those four bolts go into the water jacket and I've heard of people having leaks from them after installing dry.

    Are there hole in the power steering pump pulley?if there are,is it possible to rotate one of the holes over the hidden bolt on the water pump?
    Then get to that bolt through the hole?

    I’ve got a 96 bonneville and I noticed the power steering pulley was in the way of one of the bolts and I knew I had to mess with that a little bit, I’m also replacing my radiator and driver side cooling fan. The most work out of all of this is clearly the water pump I’m glad you posted this, I haven’t had the belly pan on for some time and one of the bolts was missing from my old water pump and I was wondering if that had caused any problems in my engine cooling?

    • @FuelSniffer
      @FuelSniffer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well a missing bolt could prevent the pump from getting a complete seal and then prone to leak which would obviously drain your coolant down which could cause overheating yes. would recommend replacing the missing bolt for sure. belly pan missing is not a big deal.

  • @robertcasianosr

    Question: does the belt need to be replaced? And if not, would I need to mess around with the motor mount to replace the water pump?

The surface is really dimpled and coroded like a lava rock HOW DO I FIX IT!! My grandma passed the car down to me to make sure it stayed healthy and i dont want to have the engine rebuilt.... • @klwthe3rd

    It's important to note that even though this is a series II 3800 motor there are important differences between years. The Series II motor was introduced in 1993 and ran into the early 2000's. I have a 1993, the first year, and the power steering pump is not located where yours is in 1998. My power steer power is far enough away from the water pump that it doesn't even come into play. Nor does the 1993's have that motor mount sticking out into your working area. You might want to retitle this video to state that it's the later model Series II engines as others may get confused why their Series II doesn't look anything like yours in the video.

      See my problem is that somehow the pulley is so close to the fuse box that I cant get anything in there to get the bolts off of the pulley. And the pulley covers two bolts that need off to remove the water pump

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lowkeymodzz you have to use what are called in the business, "ratchet wrenches". They allow you to get the wrench on bolts with very tight clearances. Hope it helps.

    • @FuelSniffer
      @FuelSniffer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for clarifying that Kenneth, I figured there could be variations even between car models as well, but didn't realize there were more between years. I didn't want this searched purely on just a Lesabre realizing it could help someone else out with a later Series 2 in another vehicle as well. I will see if I can update the title.
