@Andrew Hodgdon all Boat builders should integrate a deep and extensive knowlege about potential lighting damage(s); eg., what to do during lighting conditions such as, "what to do list red alert". Every new tech, brings a fatal flaw some how....example, old sailors know that during said conditios at sea , the old 100 year old mechanical tech wonder, the diesel engine, must be running...as all modules (alternators, control module, starter) could get damaged, but the mechanical Engine itself will not stop and it will take u to your destination or back to your home port.
I noticed that all OEMs are rushing to the new electronic tech space(c zone, electric drives, electric tables, electric bathrooms, AI, artificial Inteligence, GPS Charting with level 5 auto pilot...) ahead of preparing the ocean crossing mission for a lighting strike...
This capsule is just what we need, congrats, it should be converted to a proposal for safety at sea.

Man, great information, and I did listen to it, BUT that camera moving all over the place?? I can't handle that. Most people can't. You might want to invest in a tripod, or figure out an alternative method because watching a camera floating around in space is absolutely brutal. Thank you for sharing your knowledge...wish I could watch it without spinning around. On to part 2.

Thanks. I was pretty new at this back then. I have tripods and I use them (I prefer them). Some places are very difficult to use a tripod, or you get lazy (not an excuse) and don't set one up. I've learned since.

Wind noise, water noise, music and scrolling text, all at the same time make it almost impossible to concentrate and get something out of this video. It is unfortunate since subject meter is very important and little information is online about it.

Thank you for your feedback. I've since resolved the wind noise issue, unfortunately, too late for this series. The scrolling text.... what was I thinking - I won't do it again. When I redid this video, I removed a lot of stuff with wind noise and tried to make up the missing information with text. I do have a plan, if you keep watching the rest of the videos, for basic lightning protection. At this time, I'm also working on an invention that will help.

Very important video,,,,,,i have a problem listening to him speak while trying to read the text while the bloody guitar is getting in the way......please start again and make a better vid because you are worth listening to. I did not have music playing to me in school while trying to learn. I did not read a book while listening to an oration......please do it again,,,,as i wish to learn.

Thank you, James, I appreciate your comments. My channel has been demonetized by youtube (look up the "adpocolypse" where so many youtube creators were kicked-out of the revenue stream), and since then I've decided not to add new content, nor to edit previous content. The wind noise is bad in this video, but even worse in my other videos. This was due to a failed windscreen for the mic (it had fallen off). Every once in a while this happens, and there's not much I can do about it.
There are more references that you can look up, listed in the credits, and now I'll see to putting them in the comments section - done. If you reload this page, you'll see the references.
One of the main principles in this video series is to find ways to redirect lighting to the outside of the hull. It's also important to understand that the current from a lightning strike can go into the water and then turn right back around and come back into the vessel through another conductor.

I hope it was helpful. I don't mind feedback - I've changed a lot of my techniques since this video. Wind noise is especially problematic, and easily resolvable with a simple piece of foam rubber. I'm planning two more additions to this series. I've since sold Tai Tai and have a new sailboat. She's parked in my yard, but I plan to install lightning protection on her as well.

my observation is the same as Mike's. Sound quality (especially for a PhD. Engineer) is terrible. I stopped watching after about 3 minutes. Sorry professor.

Thanks for your comment. This took place before I figured out how to use a windscreen on my camera. Which works really well. I did a LOT of work trying to get the noise out, but unfortunately, the software tools that were available to me had their limitations.
