Douglas toured Ireland at the height of the British-manufactured famine in Ireland and documented the decimation he saw. There have always been close links between Ireland and African-Americans. See the civil rights movement displayed on murals in Belfast today. The same movement which drove the campaign for civil rights in Northern Ireland. You're no historian, Simon. You're thick as mince.
There is a statue of Phil Lynott in Dublin, but Dublin is the capital of Ireland/Eire/Southern Ireland (whichever name you prefer) and Belfast is capital of Northern Ireland, which I suppose felt left out.

Regardless of place of birth, all 3 are seen as great Irishmen in their own rights!

We have a statue in Northampton of a man called Walter Tull. Apparently he played football without distinction for Northampton town before dying in the trenches. Thousands of men who died in the first war have their names on a memorial. Walter gets his own statue for being Northampton's first black man. And a Street named after him
A bit selective, eh? Tull played for Spurs and won high praise there. He was only the third black or mixed ethnicity player in the top flight of the game. Northampton paid a sustantial fee plus a player for his services. He was also one of the first mixed race soldiers to be commissioned in the regular British Army.
What really makes this funny in a very sad way is that many Irish people were in fact slaves in the Americas. Also they might like to think on the fact that the first licensed slave owner in America was a black man. Look it up folks. Ireland has so many heroes of its own from which to choose in its past struggles, one can only gape with jaw hanging at this insult to the Irish people especially those who were bonded into slavery both at home and those abroad.
You people never cease twisting facts, do you? The black man in question was not the first 'licensed' slave owner (and what a bizarre turn of phrase that is), as slavery was not a legal thing at the time. He was involved in a legal dispute over an indentured servant with another man, and won. The 'servant' was deemed by the court to be his indentured servant 'for life'. The case took place in the 1650s, and the first laws passed permitting slavery were not passed until the 1660s. Either way, if you still hold to the idea that a black man was the first to have 'indentured servants', 'for life' or otherwise you need to learn some historical truth, as he himself had been one previously.

This is 'coals to Newcastle', the Slavery Abolition Act had been passed 10 yrs before. If Mr Douglass was so warmly received in 1845/46 it must indicate that there was no 'institutional' racism in Belfast. I notice from his bio that he visited many parts of the UK and was quoted as saying that in England he was treated not "as a colour, but as a man". On his return to the US, he was given £500 (about $48K in current money) by his English supporters. It's shocking to learn how we used to treat visitors to this country back in the day.
It was not in England, it was of Ireland Douglass was gratified by the manner in which he was received in Ireland. He was struck by the “total absence of all manifestations of prejudice against me, on account of my color. .. I find myself not treated as a color, but as a man.” He contrasted this with his lot in America: “The land of my birth welcomes me to her shores only as a slave, and spurns with contempt the idea of treating me differently.”

Is there any statues to the Windrush Generation yet? I expect there soon will be. After all they did save Britain after WW2. The valuable contribution of a handful of people saved Britain, nothing to do with millions of servicemen returning home from war. Two days after Windrush docked, 11 Labour M.P.'s wrote to Clement Atlee to halt the "influx of coloured people". Let's remind Labour Party members of this.
There's one at Waterloo Station. Prince William unveiled it stating it commemorates the invaluable contribution people from the Caribbean have made to the country. He failed to give any examples, so I don't know what the hell he was talking about. The negatives are there for all to see.
So the African-Caribbean community were not consulted about the placement of the statue. Too bad. Neither were the vast majority of us people born and bred in Belfast.

Who enslaved them? LOL

It's shocking to learn how we used to treat visitors to this country back in the day.
m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71b8cZSLv+L._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg
It was not in England, it was of Ireland Douglass was gratified by the manner in which he was received in Ireland. He was struck by the “total absence of all manifestations of prejudice against me, on account of my color. .. I find myself not treated as a color, but as a man.” He contrasted this with his lot in America: “The land of my birth welcomes me to her shores only as a slave, and spurns with contempt the idea of treating me differently.”

An MI5 asset.
When Kenneth Branagh released the film Belfast Eamonn Holmes asked him why was there an Indian corner shop a black teacher and Chinese pupils in the film set in 1969 as there wasn't any in real life at that time. It came down to getting funding to get it released.
Exactly Whatsa. Branagh could not get funding for the film unless he included "others". There were NO black policemen in N. Ireland in the 1970s (where the film is set). Nor were there any black teachers. Unheard of. Goes to show the power the woke have.
Yes that explains so much of whats going on now
This madness is everywhere.Unless you engage with the people in power you get no money.
The truth is that in any part of the uk ,a small number of foreigners ,coming here as individuals ,looking for a better life and being willing to integrate while bringing a skill here ,would have been generally accepted. The problem now is that we have mass, uncontrolled immigration which has been in full swing for over 25years and most people here are now totally fed up of it and in my case want it totally reversed and never allowed to happen again
Just how many of these economic migrants who have rocked up in the UK, since the second half of the twentieth century. Been those with useful qualifications? The number must be small. The UK has enough MiniCab Drivers, Chicken Shop workers and Turkish Barbers.
We don't want ANY! ZERO IMMIGRATION!

No Irishmen worthy of statues?
Yes Hoe. But they Don't count. They are White!
They could have a statue of that well-known dark skinned footballer Gary.😊😊
That’s hilarious.😅
not that person of colour who flogs crisps for a living and who is hand in glove with our magnificent national broadcaster the bbc?.
The ears would have cost too much.
'i was raised a poor black child...' - the jerk
Black Nigerian 1850's slave trader Efenroye Tinubu has a statue in Tinubu Square Lagos! She traded after being warned by the British to stop the practice!
@@vordman Okay ta. I got told in a pub they contributed by being bus conductors getting people to work..
So the African-Caribbean community were not consulted about the placement of the statue. Too bad. Neither were the vast majority of us people born and bred in Belfast.
Is it because councils and governments are dangerously mental.
The statue would be worth a few quid in scrap 😉
bit more than that if its bronze depends on whether its solid or just a shell of course.
Simon...while on tour in Ireland in the 1840s Douglas visited Dublin aswell as Belfast..Some obscure black prize fighter was in Ireland 1838 ,he visited Galway, some progressive got a hold of it .Hey presto a statue going up .Why Galway is flooded with them .As you know Simon Mohommed main name there ....Dublin
