Why would Belfast want, or need, a statue of an African-American who never lived in Ireland?

A statue in Bristol was dumped in the dock, and the perpetrators escaped punishment.
    Belfast also has a dock.
Just thinking about the similarity; no incitement intended.

      No.
      Legal precedent was not set.
The acquittal came from the Crown Court.
It is seen as an inferior court.
Only superior courts can make legal precedent.
Such as the appeal court, or supreme court.

    • @doloresaquines1529
      @doloresaquines1529 ปีที่แล้ว

Geo. You might as well. Sadly, Ireland has changed and not for the better. Criminality is rife. Not wishing to scare you but a week or so ago an American man (56) visiting Dublin was assaulted and very badly injured when he stepped out of his hotel on Talbot Street, Dublin. He is still in ICU with severe head and face injuries. His attackers, now arrested, are 14, 15 and 16 years of age. The attack took place not many yards from Store Street police station. All of this around only 10 p.m.
And: From an excellent article in Unherd by Angela Nagle, 13 July 202. "Having uncritically adopted the fashions of American academia, Ireland’s new young educated elite have started parroting the imported language of “white privilege” versus “people of colour”, and the dangers of nationalism versus the superior multinational capitalism-friendly values of openness. The continued dominance of Irish literature in our universities is certainly open to the accusation of being exclusionary and too white.
And talking of statues, that of Sean Russell, a historical republican figure:
Protesters still vandalised the statue anyway, painting it with the gay pride rainbow flag with added black and brown to mark their support for Black Lives Matter. Looks like the statue of James Connolly is next in line for same treatment, or pulling down. The woke are so spitefully ignorant that any target will do.

As a 54 yo living in a Co Armagh town and up until 15 years ago we had 3 Nigerian families in my youth in probably a 25 or 30 mile radius, they were fully integrated into the unionist even loyalist community and were as we would say ‘well got’ (respected) we also had a number of Vietnamese boat people and Chinese yet many couldn’t tell the difference we had some Indians (mostly Hindu) that worked the local markets all was good they came in the bad old days, they stuck it out. Now we’ve been invaded my town is teaming with all colours old and young their are black Portuguese and African young gangs tagging historical stone work and wall with their gang names, quite a few stabbing and a few murders, the drug trade in increasingly hard drugs is unreal, they get tax free for a year shop premises they stick with their own and so do the Eastern Europeans in most cases, my grandparents wouldn’t know the town anymore and in the 70s and 80s when I grew up it wouldn’t have been accepted. It’s sad we’re done I’ve Zimbabwean neighbours (they’re nice) Romanians across the round, Poles 2 doors up and in my old estate I lived in all the old friends houses are occupied by people who don’t even speak English at least not round ya. You can’t see a doctor, parents are waiting on school places and if your in A&E the first language might not be English you’ll hear as you wait 12 hours on average to be see b/c the foreigners use it as a doctors surgery. I had a friend as I grew up who was in the national front we argued all the time on his extreme positions, I’m now seeing that on some he was right, this situation would make you racist coz it looks like we’re being forcefully mixed or replaced. I’m fed up and out mainly liberal left political parties want more immigrants not less and we are just to shut up and get on with it.

Douglas was a celebrity and close friend of Irish abolitionist, Daniel O"Connell. The same man who campaigned for Catholic Emancipation which was seen as a common cause. Douglas toured Ireland at the height of the British-manufactured famine in Ireland and documented the decimation he saw.
There have always been close links between Ireland and African-Americans. See the civil rights movement displayed on murals in Belfast today. The same movement which drove the campaign for civil rights in Northern Ireland.

What really makes this funny in a very sad way is that many Irish people were in fact slaves in the Americas. Also they might like to think on the fact that the first licensed slave owner in America was a black man. Look it up folks. You people never cease twisting facts, do you? The black man in question was not the first 'licensed' slave owner (and what a bizarre turn of phrase that is), as slavery was not a legal thing at the time. He was involved in a legal dispute over an indentured servant with another man, and won. The 'servant' was deemed by the court to be his indentured servant 'for life'. The case took place in the 1650s, and the first laws passed permitting slavery were not passed until the 1660s. Either way, if you still hold to the idea that a black man was the first to have 'indentured servants', 'for life' or otherwise you need to learn some historical truth, as he himself had been one previously.

This is 'coals to Newcastle', the Slavery Abolition Act had been passed 10 yrs before. If Mr Douglass was so warmly received in 1845/46 it must indicate that there was no 'institutional' racism in Belfast. I notice from his bio that he visited many parts of the UK and was quoted as saying that in England he was treated not "as a colour, but as a man". On his return to the US, he was given £500 (about $48K in current money) by his English supporters. It's shocking to learn how we used to treat visitors to this country back in the day.

He was struck by the “total absence of all manifestations of prejudice against me, on account of my color. ..
