Making a squishy rubber bouncy ball from scratch

- For this one, I'm going to try to synthesize a bouncy ball. Basically I'm making something called Thiokol rubber, and hopefully as a ball, it'll be bouncy.

Wow he finally made something that you're *supposed to* throw at the groud after years of just throwing random chemicals for fun

Where did he study?
chemists need to use funny beakers full of reagents, they can't just *get* a bouncy ball or they'll get depression
@@colin5227 What if they got a bouncy ball, bounced it around for a bit, then ran some tests on it? Maybe they could dip it in different chemicals, then see if the amount of bounciness changes.

One of the things I love about chemistry is the exacting nature of it. Measuring in units of "some", "about" or "a bunch" really sparks the clinical part of my brain.

I think it's just the fact that it's spongy, so it absorbs a lot of the energy and doesn't bounce. A completely solid one would be a perfect bouncy cube
Maybe he can melt it and reform it
@@nasdfghidgf8081 not a thermoplastic. Will pretty much turn into permanent sticky goo if you try to heat it.
@@SianaGearz yup! Done it before, it turned to a dark sticky goo.
It needs to squish at least a little, because that's how bouncing works. (note if the sulfur is elastic (bendy) enough it can still squish but I don't know how elastic sulfur is)
@@mikobernardino9971 it needs to deform and then spring back to put the energy back into the system. If it just squishes it will just heat up the material and absorb the energy, not bouncing
When he says synthesize it's almost as if he's saying most bouncy balls occur naturally

maybe if you repeat the process with a spherical flask you'll get a rounder ball, also you probably have to start with a huge ball and compress it down until most of the liquid is gone before it will hold it's form enough to bounce back

hijacking your post because shitty orwellian youtube deletes every other top level comment I make now apparently: Nige have you ever been approached by instrument manufacturers that make NMR, HPLC, or FTIR instruments or have you approached them to maybe get some of these things for the channel for free? If not, you should. Many of these instruments have been so miniaturized and pared down for cost that they now sit on a benchtop and take up no more area than a laptop. Like Digikey giving away their oscilloscopes to electronics channels as a form of advertising I'm sure you could find at least a couple companies willing to do this for chemistry instrumentation. A simple 80MHz NMR or ATR FTIR machine would be a wonderful asset to the channel and the younger viewers learning about chemistry...

First time I make this meme but I think it's worth it in this case lmfao.
That raises a question in my mind watching you make that solution of polysulphides.
I take some drain cleaner crystals and add some sulfur to it, then slowly heat it up in a big metal pipe cap until it all melts and reacts. Then while it's liquid, pour it out into an aluminum dish and let it cool and solidify. It's called the liver of sulfur. You put a little piece of it in some water to get a yellow solution which we can use to patina copper or bronze.
Problem is, once you make it, it doesn't tend to last very long before turning white and going bad.
I'm guessing that liquid solution that you made wouldn't last just sitting in a jar for a couple of months either?
I'm not a chemist so I don't really know why the liver of sulfur solution breaks down over time. My guess would be the complex with sulfur breaks down and it falls out of solution.
The polysulfides aren't very stable in general, and in particular they break down in low pH; exposure to CO2 in the air will tend to slowly lower the pH over time, and the polysulfides break down into just sulfur and fall out of solution, just as you suspect.
I'm litrelly 11 and I was learning abt the periodic table, elements, compounds, atoms and that stuff and I've seen some of the elements and played with em and it's just so satisfying 😌 👌
"really slow" he says but it takes only 30 minutes. chemistry in college had me sitting there for 4 hours. sometimes weeks for a polymer to set up. sometimes these things take a very long time to react! days! im sure he's spent so much time just friggin waiting for shit to work lol but having to keep an eye on in incase it goes badly
Makes you wonder how someone even got the idea of how to make the first ever bouncy ball
I don't know what you speak but its satisfying😀🙂
Maybe if you compressed it into a ball it would have more bouncy properties, as the squishy substance appears to be absorbing most of the impact instead of reflecting it to bounce.

I do remember that in our final year in middle school, we actualy tried making a bouncy ball from scratch as well but we used a diferent aproach with a substance often called water glass which is a water mixture of sodium and potassium silicate. And yes that one did bounce
so you made a silicone ball?
Is there anyway to make artificial banana flavour from a bees venom (bee stings contain small amounts of isoamyl acetate, which smells of banana.)
That's magnificent! It's not a mistake, ✨ IT'S A MASTERPIECE ✨
You can feel and hear the disappointment and mild frustration in the bouncing lol
1:49 looks like throw up
Probably because bouncy balls are usually hollow, what you made is probably closer to a rubber sponge then anything else
I guess now I can understand and appreciate what it takes to make a bouncy ball.
