Steve, please consider making a video about your headphone choices at various price points. At budget X, this or that would be your choice (or the contenders at that price point and how they differ).
From sub $100 to price-no-object. And throw in ear-phones, if you feel it is a valid comparison.
By the way, I understand that there are countless headphones. I am interested in your choices of those that you have heard or have in your home. Hopefully this is not too wide-ranging.
    Thank you.

Robert Dickson CHI-FI quality control still an issue on some brands. I have tin TIN HIFI/Audio P1 planar IEM.....clarity, micro details, bass light, but solid, needs an amp to make them sing, like to be played at higher volume, mids are best i ever heard, treble very good....

I've had a pair of the t60rps for a couple years, and I have listened to plenty of Galactic on them. Ruckus on CD and Ya-Ka-May on Spotify. Ya-Ka-May on these headphones is fantastic. I generally keep the fostexes in my office because they offer good isolation for video meetings and are comfortable enough to wear for quite a long time. My problem is if I put music on them while working I find myself closing my eyes, leaning back in my chair and just listening. They really do it for me with anything bassy and textured.

Glad you mentioned that planar magnetics were available in the late 70s, Steve! I've got the Bang & Olufsen U70, Yamaha HP-50 (modded for stereo to HP-3 standard) and audio technica ATH-2 from that period. While none of them are perfect, they can all bear comparison with today's headphones and, at the sub-$100 prices they go for on eBay, the Yamahas in particular blow away the competition!

Its crazy to me how much better the T60rp is than the T50rp. The only differences are the pads and the material the cups are made of. The resulting difference in sound though is quite substantial.

Luv that you reviewed this well, Steve. Just about bought this lol. Probably still will now in the future, FOR SURE. GREAT planar highs, solid mids. Maybe not the widest soundstage. No headphone does everything usually. Unless, you have the LCD4 or the Empyrean; which I cannot afford, yet lol hoping to save and work my way there one day. But the t60rp is great in imaging and energy, as you said, Steve. 👍🏼👍🏼💯🎧

T50 is an excellent DJ headphone and epic for those who like to mod. They come in open, semi open and closed versions T20, T50, T70 if I remember of the top of my head, and probably the model numbers don't line up with the description either. So perhaps we will see open versions of the T60 as well. BTW I would not be surprised if the T60 is inspired by the T50 Modding community.
Overall I love Fostex products and I would love to see more of it on this channel, specially speaker components that often come with very interesting application notes.
Fostex, in my opinion started as a nock off for JBL but when JBL lost its way, Fostex moved in the right direction and stayed on the straight and narrow. And today it is not a zombie brand which I like as well.

Nice looking headphones that look well made. Your comments about these sounding lively and dynamic mirror your comments about horn speakers. I’m wondering why. Are they more sensitive than the norm maybe? I wouldn’t think that sensitivity in headphones would make much difference but I am curious.
I owned a Yamaha planar magnetic headphones back in 1975, they were unique I think at the time and were just amazing to me. Sounded like electrostatics with the punch of dynamics. They were light and thin compared to what I see these days in headphones. Wish I still had them to compare with these phones but the wear and tear over the years finally took its toll. 🎧

  • @zumbaladin
    @zumbaladin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have a Sennheiser HD600 and bought the Fostex T50RP like new on Amazon Warehouse for 89€.
The HD600 is very good, the music seems more "in place", more "atmospheric" but it's less detailed.
The T50RP is amazingly detailed in the highs, once you change the pads it's more comfortable and has less peaks in the highs.
The T50RP can sound sometimes unbalanced, like the highs taking too much of the scene, whereas the HD600 sounds like a more "engineered" rendering, like what the sound engineer wanted you to perceive.
The Fostex is more an incredible rendering of all the details (sometimes a cymbal can be as evident as the lead vocal), that makes it perfect for an analysis of all the parts of a sound.
The Fostex is not great with the original Beatles' albums, some mono feel like one of your earcup has failed; with the HD600 the same song is very enjoyable and more evocative.
They are both great headphones, and they ideally cohabit on your desk for you to chose between the kind of session you're looking for.

also, i m lost what amp to buy for klipsch rp8000f that will arrive end of april.. your budget choices for a full setup were nice, but the only amp of those that would be a nice match for the klipsch is not available in Switzerland.. Most other amps are too otherwordly expensive for my budget.. looking for sth neutral that makes jazz and electronic shine, possibly streaming options included and possibly physical subwoofer crossover in case i decide the klipsch don't go low enough

So I'm looking for a closed back pair of headphones. I've been looking hard. I have a pair of Hifiman HE 400-s's and I am looking for something a bit different than those. I've narrowed it down to 3 different pairs in my price range. I want a pretty accurate sound as detailed as I can get it for the price range. Sound stage doesn't have to be super super wide. Also I don't want them to leak a lot of sound. My price range is 250 to 500 dollars. So these headphones, Audeze EL-8C's, Neumann NDH20's. Which is the best for what I personally want? Do these T-60 RP's leak much sound being semi closed? Also anyone is welcome to inform me more and also let me know of any other headphones as a suggestion that they feel might hit all of those categories for me.

The Fostex can’t reproduce the signal pathway even a mid volume. I had to replace my T-50 twice due to the drivers resonating from the speaker enclosures. Very annoying.
