The problem with having no rear fender at all is that when you drive through a puddle or if it's raining, the rooster tail that the rear tire created will soak your back. You don't need an entire fend, but just enough of one to block those rooster tails in the area that would deflect water from your backside.

and love for riding a motorcycle,
whether bobber, cruiser, bagger, chopper etc
if its a comfortable or uncomfortable ride
those kinds of people will always ride, others will just complain.

Definition of Bobber (satire): 1. One that bobs (floats) 2. A person who rides or races on a bobsled 3. A motorcycle removed of all perceived unnecessary items with the intent of being "Cool, Hip, Rad, or Bad Ass" 4. A motorcycle no one wants to ride more than 30-45 min but wants to stare at and be stared at.

    @thomasbarnardjr9657 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You talked about the front fender for protection from rocks and such, and the dangers of riding without the rear fender, but what about the ride in general. I have a custom built 88 Sportster bobbed out. It's an 883 converted to 1200 with a Buell XB9 top end, on a Pauchgo rigid frame with 35° of rake. It has no front fender, and a custom ribbed rear fender that covers just past the top of the tire. I've been hit by several rocks and bugs over the years, although always from the vehicles in front of me, where the front fender couldn't protect me anyways. The front fender is good for protection, but I never found it to make the difference others say it does. The best protection it provides is in wet conditions. And that brings me to the rear. I've been caught in the rain several times, and it sucks either way. I have found that visibility is hampered more without my front fender than it is on my other bike that still has the front fender, but the difference is not so much that it deters me from riding. The rear fender however is another story entirely. I have a friend who tried the rear fender delete, but he hated it, and after getting caught in the rain on his bike, I found out why. It was the worst experience I've ever had on a bike, and that's including a major accident that almost killed me. The bike has since been upgraded with custom struts, and a short bobbed fender, and is much better. If you want to rock the fenderless rear, that's up to said owner, but a rear fender delete doesn't make a bike a bobber. The idea of the bobber concept was to strip the bike down of un-needed weight to make the bike lighter, slimmer, and faster. It was modifications to make the bike faster and better performing, and handling. Otherwise, it's more of a style than an absolute. So many people try to put rules on what is and isn't on a bobber. I think it's better stated "bobber style ", considering that there's no absolute rules. The esthetic of the bobber is what most people like.... stripped down, and simplistic. The exact look and type depends on the rider. Personally I hate the fenderless look, but that's just me. For those who like it, that's awesome. We all like different things, and the fact that we can share differences in a particular genre is really cool. Many people say that my bike isn't a bobber at all, while even more people say they love my bobber. I consider it a bobber for sure, considering that's the vision I had building it, but in the end my opinion is the only one that really matters since I'm the one who has to be happy with it. And that sentiment is the same for each and every bike owner. I would encourage everyone to consider all the aspects of your choices when it comes to customization, because we all know that it comes with drawbacks as well as the cool factor we so often go for. Stay safe and enjoy the ride.

I know this a old video but I just wanted to comment on the stock Sportster 48 suspension.
I have been daily riding a 2019 48 that I has been turned into a bobber. (So far have kept rear suspension)as my only transportation and have ridden just under 10K miles (on shitty Oklahoma roads) in the past 6-8 months and can honestly say that the bike is not very comfortable at all, It definitely isn’t a bike built for riding long distances or on roads that aren’t well maintained. That said I would ride this bike anywhere anytime and have. I have no fenders, basically just a pan for a seat and exhaust that that has destroyed my gas milage causing me to get roughly 60 miles to a tank as long as I’m riding conservatively... but I love it and can’t picture ever parting with it.
The bike in this video is super sick and has been one of my favorite bikes on the internet for a long time.

This bike is sickkkk as we say in England! I’m looking at buying an iron 883 or the 48 and would love to completely take the back fender off just like this bike but this is the kicker, I’m completely new to biking and it’s going to be my first bike, after reading comments some people are saying it’s really dangerous but I do love the look. Not sure what to do now 😂

Another definition of bobber is any modification to the bike except to the frame, once you start changing the rake of the neck or for new stuff hardtailing, then it’s a chopper.

Beautiful bike, but I'm quite a traditionalist when it comes to bobbers. To me a true bobber is stripped down and modified to increase its speed and performance. The goal is to remove any unnecessary weight by removing parts that don't contribute to the bike's performance. So those handlebars to me should be short and not sitting so high. But that's me.

  • @PortCharmers

I like classic bobbers, since I like the minimalism of motorcycles, the simplest possible driving machine. However, there appear to be a few absurdities about new ones.
Hardtails? Yes, when bobbers came up there wasn't even a word for "hardtail", for the same reason why Australopithecines had no word for "barefoot". I understand that some folks go some length to achieve the look of a hardtail, but by just cramming in some steel rods instead of shocks, you still have the silhouette of a swingarm frame, but without the advantage of it.
And how does your back look after a ride in the rain? The paradox is that in the spirit of getting rid of everything useless, you trim the fenders down to a size where they actually become useless. At least, in this case you went on and got rid of the rear one all together. Check out some 1930's british racing bikes. They had serious mudguards, although they were so stingy about the weight that they gladly push-started every time to save two pounds of kickstarter (besides, I happen to think mudguards can look cool, if done properly).
I've even seen guys roll it back to pedal-clutch and hand-shifting, almost as if it were about showing off your badassery by riding a bike that's a real pain in the arse at the best of times.
Looks like I wandered off on quite a rant. No offence intended, just my personal taste and opinion. Enjoy your time on the bike, ride safe.

Dude, would be nice if you had the 360deg camera so we can see a side shot of the bike every once in a while. Kind of to breakup the constant handlebar shot. I realize your shtick is to not be seen but you could always blur that out, or cut it lower so we can still see the bike. Just a suggestion my friend, and as always, you do you.

I got the "silly" springer seat and read shocks on mine.
I wanted to hard tail it but it's to much hassle to get legal here and struts doesn't really do it for me.
If i keep the bike around for 9 more years i might do a proper hard tail. (My bike is a -91 and in 9 years it doesn't need inspection any more).

The ape-hangers are not required, nor aesthetically recommended for a bobber. This one, for example, would look much better without them. A very short rear fender is also a very good idea. No need to obsess as you do about the seat. You needed to offer more details, such as options for placement of the license plate, turn signals, etc.

I am a Japanese girl living in Scotland.
As a former bosozoku girl I have always ridden powerful cruisers that I have stripped down to a custom bobber.
I am currently on a personally modded 96ci FXDB Street Bob but I have become increasingly disillusioned with Harley's build quality and innovation.
When lockdown is over I am buying a Yamaha XV1900 and doing a custom black bobber job on it.
