Pack-Rafting Wild Camp Adventure. Following the River Waveney from the Source. Tarp and Bivvy.

  • In this video, I join Martin from vildmark.co.uk for a pack-rafting micro-adventure along the river Waveney on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. We start our journey at the source of the river in the Lopham and Redgrave Fen Nature Reserve. Carrying the boats and all of our gear, we hike the first few miles to Scole, just to the east of the market town of Diss where we can finally get our boats into the river.
This section of the river Waveney is often choked up with weeds during the summer months, so we had a battle on our hands. We also encountered several downed trees and weirs to negotiate, so, by the time we reached our camp spot for the night, we were ehausted. A quick dinner and a well earned beer and it was time to get some sleep. The second day brought us glorious sunshine for our paddle onwards. After hearty breakfast burritos, we head off. Thick reeds and countless fallen trees and log jams try to halt our journey, but we find a way through, scraping, squeezing, pushing and pulling our boats ever forwards.
Sadly, at the village of Mendham, I had to leave Martin to continue his journey onwards towards the sea, but he has documented his complete adventure in a video on his channel (link below).
I had a thoroughly enjoyable couple of days, challenging and exhausting, but huge amounts of fun shared with great company - thank you Martin!
I hope you enjoy the video.
    Thanks for watching!

    Hi Folks, thanks for watching!
Apologies for the focus in parts of the video, I had to use an old camera during this trip and it’s a bit temperamental! Rest assured, the quality should improve when my new camera arrives!

I'd join in but I fell & sprained my knee about 10 weeks ago, so, a bit slow & still semi painful to get around, but, getting better everyday!

Folks who don’t have troubles to shoot are folks who don’t do anything. Good on you for getting out there and trying something different. I could almost feel an ESP message, “I like the canoe better”. That old tree, at your first camp, has been a good source of deadwood. Thanks for sharing and the hard video work. That was one hell of a creek / river to paddle…. When you pushed through that tall grass and said, ”That was interesting”, I was thinking of something a bit more expletive. I hope you had as much fun as misery. Texas

LOVELY FLOWERS dancing in the wind at the start! ...And so, our intrepid Royal Marines undertake a daring daylight reconnaissance over the unpromising waterlogged and waterlily clogged bogs. To amp up the difficulty, they make the journey in two inflatable backyard kiddie pools.😊😊😁 In the end, Martin was Good Company...and the challenges you faced were better faced in the proper company! The 'river' was full of spectacular nature.

In my opinion and I know this was a year before the adventure you did with Andy, but in all honesty I think this actually helped you, with getting wet, the walking (definitely helped with the portages this year, 2022) and just the general knowledge of what's to come if you did it again, (obviously you did).
Great video btw, as my motto goes, see you on your next adventure 🤟🤙✌️

Thanks for another one of your videos it takes a lot of effort to film and edit. I watched you earlier with Andy walk the Thames it was really interesting I enjoyed it. The last time I went white water canoe was in northwestern Michigan just off of lake Michigan is a trout stream. It is called the pine river. I went rafting down the Deschutes river in 91. When I lived in Portland. I also sturgeon fished on the Columbia River and climbed My St Helens in 1990. I can't afford to live there it's very expensive

That’s a tough challenge, uncomfortable pack and long walk, wet clothes, unnecessary obstructions, fear of punctures, stinging nettles, bugs. Then the relief of a hearty fire, good food and a cozy bivvy and a beer. The two extremes are so necessary for happy life. Great video as usual Simon.

I'm amazed at how the rivers aren't properly maintained with all the log jams and weed growth, you must have been exhausted, great film though, i almost feel like i was there too, I can never quite get over how much attention to detail you put in with filming yourself , you clearly had to get out of the raft, set up a camera and then get back in just to film yourself getting out again. amazing effort Simon
