SAUCONY ENDORPHIN SPEED 4 INITIAL REVIEW - IS IT STILL THE TOP NYLON PLATED RUNNING SHOE? - EDDBUD
An initial review of the latest SAUCONY running shoe the ENDORPHIN SPEED 4.
A no quite maxed out PEBA based pwrrun pb midsole here in the new iteration of the versatile trainer the ENDORPHIN SPEED 4.
Though i find this version a touch wider and heavier with quite the difference in width and surface area up against the original ENDORPHIN SPEED from 2020.
A touch heavier than the last version but the outsole much improved this will no doubt be interesting to fans of the SPEED 3. Though we find the shoe moves further away from the bigger brother the PRO 4. Not sure i really need that winged plate though which i explain in the video review.
They have sent this one over to me for review, but they wont be seeing my video before my valued viewers, nor are they paying me to make this video.

2 a.m. here in Ohio, USA. I'm staying up for this one.
I’ve been up early. Salting the back steps. Doing the trash and making sure my wife has an easy morning as she’s unwell. Thanks for tuning in! Sleep well
@@EDDBUD Sure thing, here's hoping your wife feels better! My wife just got over a nasty bout of the flu that somehow skipped me. 🤞
O-H …
Why can't they keep an original shoe going if it turns out to be a classic? I'd loved speed1 and would love to continue bying it 😢
Worth staying up for! And the orange colorway is 100% the best!!
It’s brighter than the sun ☀️
Good morning. Saucony for ever!!!!. Very good information, EDDBUD. Like from Spain 🇪🇸. Cheers.
Thanks for watching!
New fan here- thanks for making fun, informative videos. They have really helped me create a rotation for my running!
Welcome aboard!
Another banger review to entertain me on my morning breakfast sesh. Appreciate you as always mr Eddbud. Metaspeed soon 🙏🫡
Glad you enjoyed
Finally a reviewer with the orange colorway.
Thats the one I want to get!
Thanks for the reviews as always Mr. Midsole!
My pleasure!
Have them same colorway, took it into the woods on my first run 😂 now its brown 😂
I’ve always preferred version 1. I think they dumbed it down in subsequent models.
V1>v2>v3. Can’t speak to v4 but it seems like the trend has continued lol. So happy I have 2 fresh unworn pairs of v1 still and a v2 with a bit of life left.
Agree but v1 was too narrow.
V3 were a great shoe
Love the Speed 3, looking forward to picking up the 4 later this year once the 3s retire.
I ran 14 miles in the Endorphin Speed 4 on Sunday and it was liquid poetry. I find it accomodates my wider foot so much better than the Speed 2. I wish Saucony would make the 2E width versions of their shoes to the UK so that is wider footed folk can enjoy their shoes without ruining them for regular persons. I managed to snag a pair of the Endorphin Pro 4 from Wiggle for £160, looking forward to giving them a try soon. As always, thanks for another tip top video!
Thanks for the review!!
No problem!
Endorphin speed Neil young combo. What a great start to the day!
Been on the Neil Young vibe for a while. Good to dip back in from time to time
Bit depressed Ed - was itching to get some more speeds as my 2’s are on the wain - will wait for meta speed now - great I depth review thank you 😊
I think if the 3 worked for you it will be great. But the 4 is a very different feeling shoe to the 2
Speed 3s ended up being my every race long session with pace shoe. I feel in love, I hope that the four is similar enough. Seemed the speed 3 was the only shoe I could take over 20miles and not hurt my feet. Great review!
Thanks for tuning in
I just picked up two more pairs of the pro 3, absolute favourite half and marathon shoe... Once I finally blow through those I'll have to check these out
Yeah with such discounts on the racers it’s hard to go back to normal shoes!
"Mmm... Garden centre" should be your new fast show style catchphrase.
It’s like a fresh pack of seeds and a hose pipe.
@@EDDBUD I have an early childhood memory of walking into the garden/outdoor area of one of the now defunct national chain department stores, the scent of vinyl garden hose rather overwhelming upon entry. LOVE that smell to this day.
Speed 1 was so popular as there wasn’t really anything to compare it to at the time, but now we’ve got a wealth of super trainers! Speed 4 works for me as I need that lil bit of stability, but I totally get people loving the 1st shoe, it was so fun!
I found the Speed 4 pretty much the same as the Speed 3. Even to the point of not really noticing any real difference in two one hour runs, even when wet underfoot, where I wore a 3 on one foot and 4 on other and swopped them over for the 2nd run. If anything I found for my narrow foot that the 4 fits me very marginally narrower but I had to pull in the laces a lot on both. As such slight win for the 4 for me there. That said I certainly do not find them wide in the general scheme of things. Tend to agree that the 3/4 is a little muted over the 1/2 but by and large I only real use the Speeds as general daily trainer and only occasionally for actual "Speed" as it is one of the few shoes in my UK 13 that don't feel got a relative brick on my feet for easy/steady miles. As such been enjoying my 4 after bit over 50 miles now but if you liked the 3 and can find them at a good price then maybe no rush to get the 4.
Quite a bit wider now. It’s perhaps been made to be more of an all rounder now
@@EDDBUD wider than the 1/2 but as said I am not finding any real width difference 3-4
Ooof, that traffic-safety orange is bangin'! Best shade of orange thus far! 😍
It’s very bright it has to be said!
I agree. The speed 2 for me was the best ever! The 3 was 3 steps backwards for me. I have just picked up the boston 12 for my speed session's 😉
Cracking shoe! Very good versatile 3 stripe model
Love my pair so far. I put down the extra weight to the outsole, which is worth it imo
Yes the outsole is a big improvement.
Been waiting for this one
Enjoy!
@@EDDBUD my guy came through with the honest review. Appreciate it 🤙
Loved the Speed 1 and 3 so 4 is going to be a no brainer, just waiting for better colourways although that orange one is gorg
Still have my Speed V1, only about 100 miles on it. Still feels brand new and bouncy.
Yeah the v1 was a classic
go and run in them !mine held up to a 1000k and I would run in them now
Nice review. I couldnt wear the speed 3 because of the wing poking into my arch. Speed 4 is better even if I feel it (changed the insole) so I guess I agree the mid foot is wider in the speed 4 vs 3. Sad I missed the speed 1/2…
Yeah the v1 was an absolute legend
I loved the 1 & 2 Endorphin Speeds, the 3 was OK but I felt lost some of it's snap. I was going to buy the 4 to replace the 3 but now I have some doubts...
The 1 was a classic shoe. Maybe they should do a retro of it?!
The Speed 4 is has no snap feeling ... very flexible but i prefer Puma Deviate Nitro 2 more
I was going to go to bed (2:30am EST here in the US), but I guess waiting 15 more minutes won’t hurt 😉
Thanks for tuning in
I don't like the sound of those wing things. Although according to Andy there's some great thermals today 💨
Make sure you charge up the car phone!
I never ran far in them. I yet have to try the DN 3 and SC trainer 3 for comparison. But so far they have been the most comfortable snappy super trainers I have tried this year.
Seems ES4 as EP4 - both are very similar to previous iteration... outsole looks same geometry and it is same foam - apart of slice of powerrun HG in pro 4 - but let's be honest what small slice of it will do apart of marketing noise... slice of something might make a difference in the sandwich but not much in running shoe - this year slice, next year 2x slices ... and they will milk that theme for few iterations 😅
Upper of saucony were very good, so what it can be improved ? It can only go south from where it was lol
Seriously I do not have any interest in those, but things like adidss and brooks (hopefully) are getting my attention quite seriously
Good review though
But more than a slice. The underfoot feel is way better in the pro.
I've got both pairs. And imo the pro 4 is pushed towards more race day shoe and intervals.
Where as the speed 4 is now centred more around the easy runs now with abit of snap. I had the speed 3 and lobed them for easy runs and tempos
After watching your video, I took the Speed 2 out for some hill sprints. The roads were finally dry for once (aside from the new formed 'lakes' due to high water levels), so no worries about sliding around. It's such a fantastic shoe! But, because of the instability, I can only take it out sparingly, otherwise I'm guaranteed to get shin splints. For longer hard efforts I prefer the Pro 3, which is more stable and feels more cushioned. It's a real shame Saucony seems to have ruined the Speed, however, if you're looking for a light daily trainer, I'm guessing the Speed 4 looks a whole lot better than the competition.
"Breakfast with Edd"👍 Okidoki, let's 👀 the Video. Greets from Berlin
Hope you enjoy
Thanks. I enjoyed it. The video (as always) ...and my Nutella toast.😋
I had the speed3 , wasn’t impressed with them but the 4 seems better,
Lockdown is improved.
Good morning Edd.
Morning!
Sounds like it’s moved a long way from the version 2. If I had a plate giving me gip, I’d have scored it a 1! Presume already listed on ebay..!
It’s a bit weird. It’s only the left foot. May try some different insoles
I don’t know why people say that the winged plate is new, the Speed 3 had it! Anyways, awesome review, got the shoe today and I’m psyched to try it, absolutely loved the 3!
Its not new, its the same as the 3, though i think the plate in my left shoe is not mounted quite right.
A decent shoe, no doubt, but I prefer the responsiveness of the carbon plate. I'll grab the Endo Pro 4, for sure.
I think it’s worth the extra earth credits
me too. i won't use speed as a daily trainer and if i'm going to buy a speed shoe then might as well get the pro.
having said that, i have enough shoes until 1st half of 2025 and i'm trying not to buy a pair this year. i shouldn't be watching shoe reviews to have a chance of succeeding 😅
I love the speed 3, it’s a fast shoe and some versatility. V1 at the time was a game changer but fit was very narrow (for me) and grip was pretty dire at times, I struggled to toe off on greasy or wet pavements.
The grip absolutly improved this time
I have the Speed 2 and 3. Love the Speed 2 but Speed 3 got mushy in the forefoot after a couple of hundred kilometres. Very curious if Speed 4 will get mushy as the km rack up ❓
My pair of the 3 was super soft. Very compressive. This one seems a bit firmer
Speed 2 is the best one . Actually felt snappy
I have the first one with just 36k on the clock.
🥉
this valued viewer is deciding between Speed4 and Rebel4 as this season's daily trainer. Leaning toward the Rebel4 cuz I like a more flexy shoe for "just running". Snappier shoes for tempo fer shure (SM58 in particular).
Thanks for the review - I'm in the market for a daily trainer and torn between going full plush for my easy long runs or getting something like the Speed to also cover off my faster days. Just as an aside: I had a similar problem with the carbon element in one foot on my Prime X Strungs - I could really feel the energy rods where the ball of the foot meets the arch, and it ended up giving me blisters and making the shoe unusable. I think sometimes these can just get misaligned during the manufacturing process - I'd say ask for you money back from Saucony, but...um...yeah...
It does seem a tad higher than the right shoe in terms of the plate placement
The Triumph 21 is a great daily trainer.
loved the Speed 3. 1 & 2 were far too narrow and ill fitting in the heel for me. although i set a PB in the 2 until i crushed that in the 3.
Just went to your Triumph 21 video after my first run in my Speed 4s Ed. Strange I know, but after last nights run I feel the shoes are going to fill each other’s roles for me. I found the speed 4s a bit too flexible and found I had to really literally keep my foot down to sustain a decent pace. I have been spoilt recently as I have been using Superblasts for my easy and moderate runs, I find if you back off in them you still keep a decent pace, but the speed 4s lose any momentum really quickly.
I do think I need to run in ‘not so fast’ shoes in my training a bit more, I was hoping the Speed 4s could help my Takumi sen 8s in the faster tempo zone, but they aren’t even anywhere near capable of the same speeds, I think they are going to drop even below the Triumph 21s for easier runs and not even for long runs.
Perhaps a bit too much overlap now between the shoes. I know versatility is good but sometimes a sledgehammer is needed opposed to a spoon.
Love my speed 3s although I think they feel slightly different(less bouncy - that’s a technical term) after 10miles. Maybe that’s tired legs 🤔. Will keep the speed 3s for tempo runs and have a box fresh pair of pro 3s for race days.
Fresh legs on Saturdays longer run and it feels a little firmer than the 3
looks very nice ,I like d color👌 🇿🇦
Thanks 👍
Gave up on Saucony, Adidas, Brooks,Acics and all but 1 Nike..right now,for me,hoka,Salomon, topo and Mizuno are making the most comfortable performing shoes..but I haven't tried the new puma fastr or the diadora..could be a winner there..
I love that new Cielo x1. Really usable shoe
@@EDDBUD absolutely..I just got it and I intend to use it for my Boston qualifier this year..love those new shoes that some self acclaimed elites scoff at ..another I want to try is the Diadora cara..but hard to get and very expensive..
That's exactly how I felt about the winged plate on the Speed 3, felt like it was pushing my foot in an unnatural position. I'm gonna stick with the Pro 4
Brilliant review - thanks Edd. Funnily enough I had the same issue with the winged plate in the left foot with the Speed 3 - and have just got the Speed 4….and hoping that it’s not going to cause me the same issue! Do you know if the Pro 4 has the same winged plate too?
Pro 4 is a more flat typical plate
3 was a bit squishy! The plate need to be a bit stiffer, there was a strange feeling when heel strike or pronate at least to me . A higher stack v2 would amazing.
The foam in the 4 feels a bit firmer now.
@@EDDBUD good news! I was 50-50 on the 4s.
Thanks Edd for the review. I did have a pair of Speed 3 but after two runs, my right foot hurt unexpectedly… not sure that’s something to do with the plate, in the end, I gave up on the Speed 3…
I heard you have the right foot issue with Speed 4, I think I will stick with Boston 12.
Same issues for me. May try switching out the insoles
Loved the 2’s but it came at a cost with the instability causing me a bunch of issues. First few runs in the 4 and agree not as snappy but it feels almost as stable as the Tempus which is great for me
I think the wings are doing something odd to my ankle. The pro 4 doesn’t have the same issue.
I have the same issues with my 2s. I now do most of my runs in my Tempus, lovely shoe, and only use the 2 occassionally.
I loved the speed 2. Decent price and performance. For me the speed is now not worth it. I get rampant inflation but £180 is nuts. Oh well, good job I have another pair of ununsed speed 2s for this summer.
That said, I have a new favourite shoe. The puma velocity, £50, and for my use case is my shoe of choice.
I found my Speed 3 to be more durable than all but my daily shoes. And I liked the slight softness of the foam, as opposed to the harsher firmness of the Adidas shoes I tried. As a wide footer, I found Puma's shoes to be as narrow as Nikes.
I'm interested to try NBs Supercomp Trainer v3 when it comes out in August. Many complained the v2 was just too soft, v3 is supposedly more of a performer.
Would you recommend the Hoka Mach X over the Saucony Speed 4? (Only other plated trainer I;ve tried that had a softer feel).
10.4/12, I expected more from the Speed 4 but you're not the first reviewer who hasn't given it a glowing recommendation. I was interested in buying them but think I'll hold off now. Possibly New Balance Rebel V4 or Boston 12 as an alternative?
The rebel 4 looks good
Thankfully, I still have a few pairs of the Speed 2 to run in. To me, the Speed 4 feels like a stability shoe with the wider nylon plate and somewhat clunky heel. It's kind of like a Brooks Ghost with a pebax midsole. It doesn't have any of the nice speed roll transition that the 1's and 2's had. I'll be donating my pair of Speed 4's to the local thrift store.
It’s the heel width that’s the major difference. It was quite narrow and race like on the v1 and 2.
I was waiting for your review 😄 i can confirm some points although i profit from some. E.g. i have a quite wide foot, therefore the new width suits me better. I didn‘t encounter problems with the new nylon plate even on 24km runs, but i have to admit, odly it‘s less fun then the Speed 3s and very much less fun then the Boston 12. i will use them as my daily option. Price point is a joke… 200€ is to much for this shoe 😕
Thanks for sharing
It‘s a pleasure, you‘ve become my go to and only Shoetube Channel ❤😂
Just had my first run in the Speed 4, and I've found a similar issue you had with the left shoe, but mine is near the arch, and also near to my little toe. It's not too prominent, so hopefully it'll break in/loosen up a touch. We'll see. Going to test it with a different insole.
Haven’t had the issue again but on that first effort it was quite strange. Had to slow up a few times
@@EDDBUD I don't have an issue going slow. Hahahaha.....
@@ianstyring9602 It’s certainly a different midsole feel to the speed 3. Not quite as soft. Bit denser. Outsole improved too
@@EDDBUD looks great in the silver/grey colourway I've imported from the states. Very cool.
Good Morning!
Morning!
Nice🎉
Thanks 🤗
Yo edd
🥇
Fun fact, the front tab actually folds over, almost like an old style football boot! So if you’ve got too much tongue, it can be tucked out the way (odd sentence).
Not on this one. You mean the pro 4
These are phenomenal. For me, best fitting shoe since the HOKA Mach 5. And yes they do smell like a garden centre 😂
Glad they work out. My wife has relegated the pro4 to the conservatory due to odour!
That you are comparing this to the Deviate Nitro 2 is pretty damning for the Saucony. I can pick said Puma up for £90 now.
The nitro elite 2. Not the standard nitro.
@@EDDBUD ah. That makes way more sense!
Ok, I loved the Endorphine 1 & 2. What shoe out there right now from any manufacturer would you say most resembles the performance of the original Endorphine 1 & 2?
That’s a good question! There’s nothing quite like the original white mutant.
Damn, I'll have a good cry then. So to get close, I'd have to buy the Pro? But wouldn't that feel stiffer underfoot?@@EDDBUD
Not first
🥈
I kind of miss the bold colorways of the speed 3
love the color but not the price! I'll wait for a discount at some point...
Thank you for explaining your issue with the winglet plate. If the plate goes down on footstrike and then back up, how can the winglet go up and down if attached to the midsole? Does it bend/concave shape?
Second yo!!!
Fourth but thanks for tuning in
I got the speed 4 recently. It feels more roomy, which is better in length wise, my right foot is the slightly longer one n the speed 3 made my 2nd toe, being the longest hurt. I had a strange feeling on my left foot, on the ball of my foot. I actually thought I'd trodden on something, and it had come through! So weird!
Same here!
Enjoy your reviews! Would you recommend speed 4 or rebel v4 for tempo/long runs and races up to half? I have the Boston 12 and like the ride but can’t get on with the sizing and fit which I find uncomfortable around the midfoot!
The speed is more usable. Rebel is light but mushy and the upper isn’t my fav at all
@@EDDBUD thanks! Anything else you’d recommend? I have the 1080 for easy runs and occasionally use Adios 8.
@@Alexb0530 The end pro 4 is absolutely worth trying. The deviate nitro 2 or discounted elite is also worth a pickup.
@@EDDBUD appreciate it! Keep up the great content 👌🏻
Would they suit ee width wearer?
Possible. It’s much wider than the v1,2 and a little more than the 3
I had the same issue with the winged plate in the 3 but only on my left foot. When I run fast and loosen up the shoes it’s not as noticeable. But definitely very annoying bc I used the use my speed 2s for everything and raced a marathon in them.
The plate is an acquired taste. Doesn’t quite work for me
I returned mine. The Boston 12 is still superior in speed than this mushy version of the speed 4.
Wish saucony would pick what they want the speed to be. Feels like theyre really trying to let it be both a daily trainer for everyone but still have it as a tempo shoe. But the latter has lost some of its edge due to the former and now other brands have caught up to both
The width in the heel here separates the shoe from the earlier versions.
Stability wise does it hold up for heavier runners? Don’t need a stability shoe per se but I do pronate ever so slightly at the mid heel section . Never ran in any of the previous versions but I’m interested in this or the 3.
The winged plate is actually quite prominent now for me. It is noticeable in the heel for sure
@@EDDBUD thanks will definitely try these !
Endorphin Speed 2 is still the goat!
Loved the v1 and 2.
The 1 was a special shoe. The 2 was ok and did not like the 3, especially the tongue. Not sure why Saucony moved away from what they had with the original. I ordered the 4 but have not received it yet. Hopefully I like it more than the 2 and 3.
Better tongue now though similar in many ways for the midsole
It seems that Saucony want to create a sort of crowbar separation between the Pro and Speed range, so people buy both...but this seems to have compromised the all round super trainer nature of the Speed (4). I don't think I will go for this as both you and FOD Runner have highlighted issues with the 4, such as the extra weight, the unnecessary wings (?) and the fact the 4 has lost a bit of pop from the 3 (which in turn lost pop from the 2). It seems a shame that rather than Saucony understanding that some shoes will always in any given range and iteration be better (and better received) than others, and that's just natural slection. It seems odd to rectify what seems a marketing thang' by selling out the legacy and future of what was a better range ie the Speed range.
It seems a world away from the speed v1
Same as for v3. In one way its nice having a wider sole but lacks the same pop and roll as v1 or v2. Luckily have a box fresh pair of v2 to being back out for summer training. Wont be buying v4.
Sizing question - I found the Speed 3 a bit narrow in the Metatarsal area. If you compare the 2 insoles is the V4 wider?
Very similar sizing here.
hi @Edd, i am still using my pair of endorphine speed 2 i could pick up last season but i would need an alternative soon. Have the 3 and i really don´t like it. My normal setup is Nimbus 25 for easy, Speed2 (2 per season) for speed sessions and Longruns, Speedgoat for everything trail.
What could i try in exchange for the speed2 ?
Puma deviate nitro 2, superb deals on those
Hey edd, could you do a comparison between the v1 and v4 please 😊
Will need to clean up my old pair 🤣👍🏼
Does the heel still curve inwards on this one? Some people had Achilles issues with the Speed 3.
Yes a little. Not as much as the v3
Ed you often have Johny Marr Are you thst level on guitar.
No person on earth has a right hand like marr.
Why cant they keep a shoe going if turnes out to be a classic. Id love to by Speed1 again 😢
Quick question which has more width in midfoot and toebox between Boston 12 and speed 4?
Boston 12 always feels good due to the profile and lockdown. It’s a touch heavier but I feel a bit more suited to what the speed was a few years back
@@EDDBUD cool but is it narrower than speed 3 or 4?
I currently run in boston 12, is speed4 worth buying or buy bostons again? Or anything else similar you would recommend?
Quite different shoes. More squash in the speed and a bit lighter
Seems they messed up on the laces on both pro and speed this time round nothing a swap out can’t fix
Yeah I don’t dig the elastic style laces
Is a winged plate the same as a forked plate? Does it split like a Y in the forefoot?
Nah this has the forks visible on the sides of the midsole
Put a like if the speed 1 was the best ever 👍🏻
Please suggest me which colour is good looking?
I kinda like this one from a “stands out” perspective
I am skipping this version. I preferred Speed 1/2 and still have two pairs of Speed 2 new in box. I have Speed 3 as well and I am not getting another pair of that and will probably skip v4 for being too similar to 3. They lost the original speed pop in v3 and this is unfortunately more like v3.
Well, it's a crime scene. Diluting the Speed so badly. Saucony should call it 1/4th !
I wonder how many miles can the V1 last 🤔
I guess it will have to serve a bit longer 😂
The Endorphin Speed 1 is the GOAT! They have ruined it!
It’s quite different to that original
