I think the actual difference is with ashes of war etc every weapon is much better compared to DS. The main thing I've noticed is the starting gear is a bit more important in terms of not being able to easily find it for other classes. Really enjoying playing as the Samurai class, the Unsheathe ability really cuts through the bad guys like a hot knife through butter. One thing I just discovered - if you equip the Brass Shield you can use Unsheathed and block with a shield simultaneously. The Brass Shield has no Skill attached to it, so if you combine it with the Uchigatana, then L2 defaults to Unsheathed. I’ve found this a lot easier and smoother than having to fiddle around with the two hands button combo, especially during bosses as you can keep your shield up and get in those opportunistic Unsheathed attacks!
I am not far in and no souls expert. so where do you get the unsheath from? I have a wind stomp thing ATM am I going to be able to swap it to unsheath or have I messed it up?
@@oph1066 Unsheathed is the default skill that is applied to your Uchigatana - it's the skill that's mapped to L2. You shouldn't need to obtain it. If you equip the uchigatana without a shield / hold with two hands, then the onscreen skill prompt should change to Unsheathed. Unless you've somehow overwritten the skill with something else, it should definitely be there.
Just east of the storm hill shack where you get the jelly fish summon, there is a place called warmaster shack. He sells ashes of war. Buy his "no skill" ash. If you go to gatefront ruins and loot the chest at the bottom of a set of stairs you can apply ashes of war to gear at any grace point. After doing these 2 things you can apply no skill to any shield, staff, torch, bow, etc. This allows you to have something in each hand and let's you do the ashes of war of your primary hand.
Thank you so much for blurring the names of bosses. I really want to learn more about the game before starting but I don’t want to get spoiled on what I’ll discover. This helps a ton
As someone who started off with Samurai, you've pretty much hit the nail on the head when it comes to this class. Some other things to mention is in regarding the parrying technique with the shield to stagger your opponent to get some critical hits in as well as equipping the green turtle talisman to increase your stamina recovery speed since you'll be relying a lot on getting hits in as well as dodge rolling to increase the distance between you and your foe. Other than that, this is a great explanation. Keep up the good work.
I'm an absolute die hard Souls devotee and I've always preferred STR/DEX builds and that's why I picked the Samurai. I love playing a more defensive way and also using pyro and STR/DEX builds are great for that if you use light armor and dodge a lot. It's all risk reward though because it definitely makes you a lot easier to kill quickly in boss fights.
@@arthurleboutdur9153 Tbf he said “knights cavalry” in the same bit so I just assume he didn’t bother to censor it since he already said it, I mean he still could have censored it but he did the same with the runebear.
I've been testing each starting class out for around 5-6 levels each just to get the feel for how they'll play (naturally each and every one can be changed down the line, but I like to stay close to their starting archtype to keep with a theme...), and I find the Samurai is indeed the best class for beginners, and looking down the line can be an incredible bleed machine at endgame. Early on, Unsheath is *almost* broken.
Unsheathe + Heavy Attack is often amazing for me. It has been staggering on first hit or one shotting. Also I noticed that over 35 dex my samurai slashes are super fast
@@samirmansour5321 hold strong attack + right click then release the strong attack first next is the right click and then click the left click you have to do it fast If you want to use two hands on katana it's E+Left click . Your katana must be on the right side to do this
Thanks for your help! Other than a few hours trying DS3 this is my first dive into these games and your character selection, beginner guides, and samurai guides have made what would have been a very frustrating orientation into a lot of fun where I'm able to start enjoying the game right away.
The Moonveil Katana’s skill is basically a direct upgrade to Unsheathe, and yeah, +10 with 60 Int and 40 Dex is stupid high damage, I tend to have the Meteroite blade in my offhand to duel wield, and obviously I dropped the bow entirely and use spells as my ranged option.
I absolutely love this build! It inspired me to finally start playing the game as a Samurai (after trying a few builds) and love the move set, unsheath is a game changer for this build and combining with the longbow it is brilliantly effective!
I am absolutely enjoying the samurai class in Elden ring and I will be taking these tips with me onto the battlefield thank you for this excellent video!
You can also find ANOTHER uchigatana in one of the dungeons in the first bit. Try using one on off-hand and using L1 for more bleed build up ( all my ds2 homies love the powerstance)
I started the game using this class and I just found another uchigatana. When you duel wield them you don’t have to two hand it to do the special move. So you can keep the faster one handed attacks from both swords and press L2 and immediately go into the special sword draw.
I’m a newb when it comes to Souls Games, and this is my first one. All I’ve been doing today is researching how to play and I plan on starting the grind tonight. Video was super helpful!
I found that putting a couple of levels into arcane in the earlier part of the game was very useful as it greatly increased the amount of items I picked up. Even a single level made a noticeable amount of difference.
this was a huge help. I rage quit when the game first came out and go too busy to pick it back up. Finally did with samurai this time. Still suprt early but already much better expierence. Also knew what to expect this time lol
It's crazy that already I can be nostalgic coming back and looking at these videos. I wish there was a way to know you are about to have one of the best gaming experiences of all time! :)
I never play any of these games or fantasy games (just have been more in the mood of sci-fi games) but I bought the game just because I like the idea of being a samurai in it. Not to mention the attacks look satisfying watching your gameplay.
All I play is Samurai. Got a knight build but I am a Samurai nut. Own 16 Samurai Swords\Katanas. Picked up a second Uchi. Dual wield jump L1 into combo is crazy. Thanks Fex. All I watch are your guides.
I'd suggest getting the eclipse crest shield from the storm dungeon. It has 100% physical block. Low enough strength requirement and no skill so you can still use unsheath.
The "Fanged Imps Ashes" Starting gift gives you a summon of 2 little imps that attack very fast and also apply bleed, and yes their bleed stacks with your Katanas bleed, so they are very synergetic and useful. Not sure if you can get the Fanged Imps later in the game but so far I have not come across them during normal play.

Love this video and all of your ER content. You’ve almost convinced me to start as a agile Sam over a tanky vagabond. Can I suggest doing a video on the vagabond next since a lot of beginners like myself are looking to use that class since it has been dubbed as the beginner class?
@@twknd9451 there is a ashes of war merchant in the game you can search the location I don't remember he's location and he sell a ash of war named no skill if you buy that you can put it on your shield then you can use one handed unsheath
@@twknd9451 what this does is allow your weapon ability to be used even if you have a shield. If shield is not equipped then you have the weapon ability already
Just some clarification, you can use a shield and use unsheathe you just need to make sure it's not a parry shield or has a skill. Like Brass Shield which is a 100% phys shield. That's what I use since the guard counters are very strong and useful often. Also that Ashes of War that does no skill. Unsheathe is so nutty, the burst damage you can do with a 3-4 hit into a heavy Unsheathe (vertical slash) is gross. I've been able to insta phase bosses or skip phase transitions from my testing. So good, I love how strong bleed is in this.
I started playing as a vagabond class to get in to the whole elden ring system. No I'm on my samurai and the samurai soo mutch love. This guide will help me alot. Peace from Sweden
After finding another unchigatana in the death touched catacombs ( I think that's what they're called) I've been loving the dual wield uchis. I have the poison blade ash of war on the left hand one and it's been super useful, that weapon art applies a LOT of poison damage and so far its poisoned most enemies in one swing. That plus the bleed damage is great.
This is a versatile build to start with I am noticing. The stat spread makes it viable to make a lot of builds by midgame. Even if you are sacrificing a level or two outside of wretch this might be the best starter build to pick if you just don't know what you want to do quite yet.
just got this game and I've never played any souls games and man I am getting my butt kicked. Thank you so much for your video. I didn't even know about two handing the katana. I have been playing for about 3 hours and I'm dying a lot but the game is very fun. I can't wait to try all these things that you said in the video. Now I just have to figure out how to get out of work for the day. Thanks
Same... the thing about fromsoftware games is that they don't explain everything to u. They only tell u the game basics. I didn't even know u can use a skill.
Great video - super helpful thank you. One thing - you CAN use Unsheathe when using the katana one hand + shield. What's important is there is no skill on the shield (either one you've put on yourself, or an innate one like "Parry"). I use medium shields with 100% physical block and if there is no skill on it ....BAM, you get to Unsheathe with the katana! If you want to keep weight low, I can recommend the "Eclipse Crest Heater Shield" or if you can spare a little more weight, even the bog standard "Brass Shield" is great.
What a killer video dude!!! Absolutely helpful to me since I went blind and chose the samurai out of the love for using Katanas in games 😂. This is a major help with my build since I am still very new and haven’t don’t too much with the leveling up or game clearing.
Been playing for but 10 hours because of work but this video made it really simple for me to understand the samurai build and how to play him thank u so much
I personally actually use the ability spinning slash. It works super well. As a samurai, you'll get surrounded by enemies quite often. Spinning slash not only hits multiple targets, but staggers easily. Gives you leeway to make your next move. I highly recommend it.
@@mohammadusman5883Probably too late to help, but on the way from the stormgate to the dragon bridge, there will be a knight in a shack on the right hand side next to the road.
This is my first experience with this type of game and although it's owning me, this build is keeping me playing the game. I want to beat the game with just the base build.
I haven't finished the video yet, so forgive me if you already said this, but the huge advantage the Sam has to me over other classes is it's potential for flexibility for hybrid classes. It, along with Vagabond has the lowest stats combined in int/faith/arcane, all of which are viable secondary stats for hybrid classes. Meaning if you are stuck and unsure which secondary stat you want, when at comes to respeccing you should still be fairly optimized if you want to respec at a later point. In contrast, if you want to respec something like Prisoner, which starts with 14 in INT, you are pretty much locked in to INT even if you respec unless you are willing to waste 6-7 points. Same with Bandit for Arcane and Prophet for Faith. You are locked into their respective main stats. In other words, if you are still on the fence or just want the flexibility to respec at a later point (assuming you are good with DEX as your physical stat and not STR), Samurai is the class for you. You're pretty much always optimal if you respec to either a ARC or FTH hybrid build, and only slightly behind Prisoner if you decide to go INT with your secondary stat. No other class has this much flexibility really.
i'm gonna do a Dex/faith character, but i can't decide between Confessor or samurai as my starting class. confessor gets me right in there with an armor set i like and the miracle catsing catalyst. but if i pick samurai i get a better starting weapon, but i don't know how hard it will be to obtain a faith catalyst and miracles. also.... does the confessor have bad starting stats somehow? i don't really get that part, ppl keep saying samurai is good for dex/faith cause of stats, but i don't really see why.
@@lillewilleman It's because of their stats in arcane and int, which both are 9 and 9 respectively. Contrast that with Samurai which has 9 and 8 respectively, so one less. If you are going for a dex/faith build, you will not be pumping either int or arcane, so you want those to be as low as possible. All of the other stats (str, vigor, endurance, mind, etc) all will need at least a couple points in them so it's not a big deal to have some starting point in those stats. Most weapons will need at least a little bit of str to meet their minimum requirement. You will need some vigor to stay alive. You will need some Mind for the FP. Endurance for the Stamina. Etc. But as a Dex/Faith build, Int and Arcane or essentially useless to you, and any points you put in them would be wasted so you want them to be as low as possible. So Samurai comes out ahead since as I mentioned, 9+8 is lower than 9 + 9 in their useless stats (INT and ARC). 1 wasted stat point isn't a HUGE deal though so if you like the look of Confessor I'd still go with it. What's more of a problem is when you start wasting a bunch of points like what I was trying to explain in my original comment. If you go Prisoner and decide to respec to DEX/FTH or DEX/ARC, you are wasting a TON of points in INT because it's base stats will always have 14 in INT if you respec. If you pick prisoner you are essentially locked into DEX/INT. With Samurai you have a ton more options if you want to respec. You could go full DEX or you could go DEX/INT, DEX/FTH, or DEX/ARC at respec. The only one that wouldn't be completely optimized is DEX/INT as Prisoner would beat it, but it's only a couple points so it's not that bad.
I was going to go for a spell sword build, so this seems to be the way. Plus a solid starting weapon is always great. Now I just need to figure out if twin blades are fun or just look like they would be fun.
@@lillewilleman Im in the same boat as you, lmk what you decide I used the katana in ds3 and never used magic so leaning towards confessor but if all that stuff is acquired pretty quick im good with samurai just incase i want to respec into something else later
Thank you very much for this guide bud! I really appreciate it as this is my first from game and I chose this build as I love the look of this class and it's katana/bow!
Dex/Faith samurai is straight cracked as well. Vigor/Dex/Faith with 20 str (for shield). Replace bow with sigil for lightning spear and electrify armament, grab jellyfish shield for defense and you're a god. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
Adding a strike type weapon like a flail to this build will allow you to take on the majority of enemies in this game without losing damage output due to resistance to slash damage a lot seem to have. You can obtain one early in the Gatefront Ruins in Limgrave from one of the coaches you can loot. It requires 10 str and 18 dex with a D and C scaling respectively until you are able to change it to Keen, where is becomes E and B. This and the Nightrider Flail (obtained from a Night's Fury) are excellent damage dealers and both have the bleed effect. The Nightrider has a slightly slower swing but puts out more damage than the flail.

I am so glad I found your channel before I get ready to venture out in this game. This video convinced me to start with the Samurai build because that unsheath ability looks so satisfying. I have also queued up your video on things to do at the beginning of the game, as well as your mid-level 50 build video on the Moonveil Samurai for when I get there. Your content is amazing.
There is a really early ashes of war ability that gives extra bleed. It also allows for arcane scaling which will increase bleed build up. It's very similar to the starting ability on the uchikatana. Those are both essential things for bleed builds. You can also get the dark whetstone that allows you to put bleed on any weapon, but that's end of mid game.
Elden Ring was my first souls game and after I beat it I tried the samurai class for the first time. Damn do I wish I chose this as my starting class. I feel like I would have had an easier time learning the game's mechanics thanks to the different affordances offered by the samurai weapons and abilities; getting to learn ranged and close combat, understanding how to use unsheathe and when to roll away, understanding when to play aggressively or defensively.
I went as a Samurai and it reminded me to the build I had in Dark Souls 3 the same Uchigatana and a Longbow, so I really felt at home, but I've been so into the Katana that I forgot about the bow completely altogether, but started leveling up Faith and Arcane to start mixing some incantations like fire and dragon breath and adding lots of blood attacks to the mix, I miss my unsheathe but I ended up placing Blood Slash on my main Uchigatana since it is a very strong long range attack, that its slower than Unsheathe but it does better posture damage and keeps me at a distance plus it looks very cool, but I also have a second Uchigatana to dual Wield them and that one still has the Unsheathe so I can switch to two hand that one if I feel like I needed or I'm missing it. I also got the Reduvia knife which has the Blood Blade weapon art that allows me to send blood slashing projectiles that also builds up bleed.
I tried the very first boss before the tutorial with different classes. Ultimately I managed to kill it with Samurai. That‘s why I‘m here, because I figured which class I should play
The one boss you were fighting(bloodhound) or whatever it was has an amazing weapon that I still use. It scales high when you level it up with somber smiting stones and its weapon art is way better but similar as unsheathe plus if you heavy attack after you use your weapon skill it will insta teleport you to your staggered enemy causing another heavy attack. Has good bleed build up too.

You can use a shield and still get Unsheathe. Just go buy the no-skill ashes (from Warmaster, almost due north from the start) and remove parry from the shield so that Unsheathe is always available.

You can get the ashes for unsheathed from that white rolling bag southern of agheel lake, the one filled with giant crabs.
Would this work with a staff in offhand? I was in process of beefing up my spellsword to wield a katana.

You know you are watching the right person when you see that they actually censored the boss names to avoid even the tiniest spoiler.

I’m a newb when it comes to Souls Games, and this is my first one. All I’ve been doing today is researching how to play and I plan on starting the grind tonight. Video was super helpful!
Good luck, be patient and don’t give up!
I found that putting a couple of levels into arcane in the earlier part of the game was very useful as it greatly increased the amount of items I picked up. Even a single level made a noticeable amount of difference.
This was super helpful, this is my first souls game so I felt a bit lost but I feel better about my choice to roll with the samurai now
Elden Ring being the first Souls game I'm devoting time to, I really appreciate this guide. Really well-done.

I'd suggest getting the eclipse crest shield from the storm dungeon. It has 100% physical block. Low enough strength requirement and no skill so you can still use unsheath.

Just gotta say you have been an absolute Legend man. Thank you for your work.
This is a versatile build to start with I am noticing. The stat spread makes it viable to make a lot of builds by midgame. Even if you are sacrificing a level or two outside of wretch this might be the best starter build to pick if you just don't know what you want to do quite yet.

I personally actually use the ability spinning slash. It works super well. As a samurai, you'll get surrounded by enemies quite often. Spinning slash not only hits multiple targets, but staggers easily. Gives you leeway to make your next move. I highly recommend it.
how to get it
@@mohammadusman5883Probably too late to help, but on the way from the stormgate to the dragon bridge, there will be a knight in a shack on the right hand side next to the road.
Some people (like myself) are going for the full Physical damage on their first run. I used similar technique in all Souls and Bloodborne.

Good tip that.
