The reason this SCP is so good is best it is raises the question: is in actually a cognitihazard or are the SCP Foundation covering something up from their own staff?
My headcanon is that it is both, that the foundation did something and made a cognitohazard with a grudge.
_Absolutely_ a cognitohazard, possibly both, but _definitely_ that. The namedrop of a location making it through redacting, and the second file being entirely “come find us and (die at the bottom of a lake) join us,” sell it hard.

Well, sometimes, the Foundation ends up making anomalies.
Alicia, this is actually part of a set of SCPs collectively referred to as "The Class of 76". We don't know... WHAT happened during 76, but during a summer, whatever happened caused a collection of Midwestern schools to become... changed, basically, by a group of Reality Warpers who go by the name Syncope Symphony. Some of their notable SCPs include:
SCP-1833 (A Yearbook that modifies your mind, and also changes to reference the reader. As you read, the faces become morphed, and the captions... they get ugly.)
SCP 332 (A marching band that is able to telepathically control anyone who hears their music into joining their band, until they are crushed by the weight of the people marching with them.)
SCP-3935 (A highschool located in Salvation, Indiana [My home state!] which houses an otherworldly space of non-Euclidian geometry with a dark, dark secret...)
And then there's SCP7676 the class of 76'.

SCP-682's interaction with 053 is my absolute favorite in all of the SCP universe. Wish there were more people creating their own interpretations for it tho
This is defiantly one of the creepiest scps. Not only in the execution of it's anomalous effect, ei. Manipulating your mind and memories, altering your perception of the world and luring you in like a trap, but also just in the way it's told. The layout of the file, the interview, the repeated phrase. This is definitly one of my personal favs, just a master class on a short, effective horror piece.

The Class of 76 is such a good, weird and very creepy bundle of SCPs. This is one of my favorites of them. The Exploring Series on TH-cam has a great video on it as a general overview (appropriately titled The Class of 76), as well as one on Syncope Symphony and one on SCP 7676, which "finishes" the story. We've had a great year, haven't we?

If you’re ready for more SCP shortfilms, the next to watch would be *SCP: Dollhouse* by Evan Royalty, the same one who made Overlord. Overlord may have a higher budget, but if you really thought it was scary, well, you’ll correct yourself soon enough.

This SCP is the intro to what's called "The Class of 75" canon on the wiki, it's a whole thing written by DjKaktus, one of the best writers on the wiki, he has like 3 canons he's made himself and various unrelated SCPs, I've even talked to him, he's a great dude

Class of '76 was started by Roget/Harmony and goes back to Series I with such SCPs as the marching band (332). SCP-1833, which is mentioned at the end of the video, was also written by Roget.

You’ve covered a lot of The Volgun so far but there are other great creators that cover scps!
I’d recommend checking out SCP 1048 next, specifically by ”SCP Illustrated”.
SCP illustrated covers scps like The Volgun but he uses illustrations that he makes himself to show the scps and topics he talks about.

Cognitohazards are one of the scariest types of SCP. Simply observing or acknowledging them may be enough for them to activate and mental stuff is always particularly freaky to me.
My favorite SCPs are 2521, 650, 261, and 294. All worth checking out, though the Volgun's video on 2521 is...unorthodox.

I remember reading the document originally and thought it was so well done with it's references to cognito hazard protections throughout.

Horror is like spicy food. Hurts sometimes, but sooo good, and the really powerful ones make you feel like you've had an out of body experience, lol.
I just read the SCP 1833 (the book of a graduated from a school shown in this video) and it's actually kinda scary, short, but scary concept, also shows how a "safe" object can cause harm, because safe means easy to contain, not harmless
LITTLE EXPLANATION OF THE SCP: (don't read this if you wanna go to the site yourself)
The book anomalous properties actually only work on people who have graduated at that specific school, when someone in those conditions reads the book, it will start with heartworming messages like one would see on those, all directed to the reader (by name), but, page after page, the messages will become more hostile, at about page 3 you will start seeing insults and very harmful words, then, the pictures will appear, pictures of the reader, commiting crimes, being mutilated, murdered, murderING, etc.
It's very psychologicaly harmful

The TLDR of this one is that it's a lake full of corpses that make you think you recognize them from your past, but if you fall for it even a little you're compelled to join them.
So SCP-2316 is part of the Class of ‘76 storyline and an essential part of that is "Document Recovered from the Mariana Trench".
Basically Class of ‘76 is based on and built from what that short story reveals.
It’s a good one too I remember how hard it hit the first time I read it but TheVolgun’s got a video reading it.

Seriously, the way this was spun out into a whole cannon and the story explaining it is amazing; I never expected the backstory when I 1st encountered this, or for it to be directly linked to so many other SCPs. The class of 76 ... .

If you’re wanting an SCP that doesn’t traumatize you, SCP-3092 is pretty wholesome. I mean, not as wholesome as 999, but really, who can compete with the gooey orange goodest boy?

Yeah this is one of the few scp’s that get to me. Cognito hazards are great because simply learning about them strikes terror into your heart.

I swear, it truly is cathartic seeing people react to this one. Particularly how so many people have the exact same "IDONOTRECOGNIZETHEBODIESINTHEWATERIDONOTRECOGNIZETHEBODIESINTHEWATERIDONOTRECOGNIZETHEBODIESINTHEWATERIDONOTRECOGNIZETHEBODIESINTHEWATER" on loop reaction at *that* part so often, just like I did when I first experienced this video. This one just _freaks you out_ so badly that you truly feel like you have to say the phrase over and over to maintain your grip on reality. It truly does *feel* like a cognito-hazard, more than any other SCP I can think of.

13:50 and this just made all the hairs on my back stand up.
The best part of this, to me, is what they *don't* tell you. There is no hint (at least in this particular file) of what happened to the Class of 76. Why are their bodies in the water? Is it really their bodies in the water, or something else? Why is it classified as Keter when it otherwise does not seem to rise to the level of containment difficulty normally associated with that classification? Why does the doctor begin to freak out when he starts reciting the student's names (other than, perhaps, fear of being exposed to the cognito-hazard)?
What sins lie drowning in that lake, and what might happen if someone were to dredge them up?
Basically the way this and similar "COGNITOHAZARDOUS" SCPs work is that the more you know about the thing, and especially certain aspects of the thing, the more that knowledge affects you. Whether it just generally drives you insane, causes a particular behavior, or does something much wilder depends on which cognitohazard we are dealing with. Some will outright kill you, and some can even alter you physically. If you recall in the Overlord video, one of the MTF agents saw something in the basement and started freaking out before shooting himself, that was either him being controlled by the effects of a cognitohazard or else realizing he was under those effects and choosing to kill himself to save the rest of the team before he fully lost control zombie bite style.
With this in mind the danger of a document describing such an entity in detail should be pretty obvious. The foundation employs various AI and similar techniques to identify and remove anything that poses such a hazard from the various documents, though this is an imperfect science and often requires several rounds of people viewing that document and falling victim to the effects before all the dangerous bits are fully removed.
The necessity to not know about the thing they are containing makes cognitohazards particularly interesting SCP topics.

Love your content and seeing SCP 2316 is new to me.
I recommend other SCPs done by TheVolgun such as:
-SCP-6373 (The Stage Blight) Keter, now neutralized
-SCP-3288 (The Aristocrats) Keter
-SCP-1678 (Unlondon) Euclid
Another channel named Infame Kato - Manotas Pro did Unlondon, but TheVolgun has more recent addition/changes of the SCP. I'll let you decide which to watch. I do recommend seeing Infame Kato - Manotas Pro's SCP-1337 (The Hitch Hiker).

just to specify, the subjects arent seeing people from their own childhood in the lake, they are seeing the EXACT same group of people. specifically its a group of teenagers that just graduated the same highschool in 1976. they have names but its censored.
regardless if you went to that school, ever went to an american highschool, or are even of the appropriate age, everyone will suddenly gain memories of being friends with them and would supposedly know what happened (it could possibly still be fabricated but the foundation keeps putting a lid on it so we would never know).
whats for sure is that some anomaly happened with this specific highschool between the fall of 1975 to the summer of 1976 because there are two other SCPs from that school and year.
- one scp, 332, which is a highschool marching band from 1975 that went missing. they are in a continuous marching loop in a quarantined town. anyone who hears the music would be compulsed to join the marching band with imaginary instruments and keep marching until they die of exhaustion.
- the second scp, 1833, is the highschool's 1976 yearbook. its full of wholesome messages written inside but they get more sinister and morbid after each page and contains personal info about the reader. followed by a last page would have a picture of the reader sleeping in their room with misshapen figures standing over them. then ends with a reference to the lake sco
