A long time ago, I read Arctic Nation cover to cover while lounging at a Barnes and Noble. It was weird, gripping and I couldn't put it down until I got the end. Never could remember the name before this video and definitely had NO idea it was a series. Thank you for jogging my memory!
Johnathon Haney happy to jog your memory! Yes, I can definitely see why that story would be so strange when you come across it randomly at the Barnes and Noble. Definitely one of a kind and memorable!
Indeed. I hope one day we get a proper animated series adaptation of these comics. The stories are engaging and the art style is perfect for the small screen.
For years, I wanted to read Blacksad, but none of the comic shops I frequent carried his stories. That all changed yesterday when I went to a library, of all places, and found A Silent Hell there. I feel like my life has been made better just from having read this book. I haven't been so excited about something in a long time and I will definitely need to hunt down the other volumes. You are definitely correct. It only took 6 pages for me to know that this is top tier storytelling and art. Absolutely spectacular. And the video is great, too. ;)
Dude your videos are awesome thanks! This you may know, that Juanjo Guarnido and Díaz Canales are Spanish both, and they work for the French market first cause the industry is definitely bigger in France. I'm telling this as I'm an Spanish artist myself and feel very humbled by these two artist who managed to do such an incredible work of art. Thanks for the video!!
Thanks! Yes, it's a very smart move on their part. I love their work and I hope they can receive more recognition worldwide for it. I hope 2018 brings great things for you and your career!
I tend to come back to this video ever couple of months because it's so unique in terms of reviews. It really has a vibe to it that not only service the tone of the book itself, but enhances the quality of the video as well. I'm pretty sure this was my first video from this channel and it was the one to get me to sub.
I recently discovered Blacksad and its exactly what I've been wanting, a hard boiled film noir detective graphic novel with a rich and unique art style
I have read four volumes of Blacksad, and I loved them. Great art, great characters and great stories. And I have you to thank for the recommendations.
i looked into some of their work and found out one of them (juanjo guarnido) made an animated music video for a band th-cam.com/video/y2vzBdIejVY/w-d-xo.html its really fuking gooooooddddd
Man thank you so much for the discovery! I mean I'm such a fan of all kinds of jazz inspired art so it's really amazing to be able to add that one comic book series to my collection as soon as I can. You've definitely become one of my favourite Channel when it comes to comic books analysis. Much love to you man and keep up the good work ❤️
if they ever produce a Blacksad animated film or mature animated tv series, I have always thought Idris Elba would be perfect to voice Blacksand. Just to CLARIFY its not related to his skin or the fact that the character is a Black Cat. But because he has one of the amazing voice and is an incredible actor. Id loves him as Shere Khan in the Jungle Book reboot and would love to hear him voice a more heroic feline character.
The Blacksad: Under the Skin video game brought me to this video. This video, in turn, is bringing me to the comics. Can't wait to read them! This seems like such a unique and artful world.
I just finished reading all of them in 1 sitting and I LOVE THESE COMICS!!!!!!!! John Blacksad is without a doubt 1 of my favourite characters in all of fiction. And the stories are just great, my favourite has to be Somewhere Within The Shadows. The next volumes have to be translated to English shortly, I WANT MORE!!!!!!!!
Probably my favourite video (not to mention the first) I've watched when I discovered this channel. It's amazing to watch someone analyze a comic book series on a critical level. The way you review a comic book's subject is long enough for me to keep invested but short enough that I don't drift off. I admire videos that have this sort of quality with utmost care & precision, and it's endearing to hear you talk in a simple but understandable critique. I can't wait to see what videos you have to offer. :)
this entire video is amazing. the way you talk about it, the music in the background, the editing style. it’s all so wonderful, and i absolutely adore blacksad
Guarnido's artwork is what first got my attention, since I couldn't actually read much of the French, so had to sort of guess what the storyline was. This was very early on, maybe about 2004, so when I realised there was another storyline out there it took me a while to track down a copy from overseas of Arctic Nation. When I finally found the series available in a collected English translation in my own country (New Zealand) a couple of years after that I was very happy to find that the writing was on point for the genre and more than matched the artistry and sophistication of the images I'd already come to know quite well. It's an absolutely stellar comic book, and am always delighted when I stumble across a new volume or collection whenever they come out every few years. Just last week my partner, who knows I love this series, bought the video game, Blacksad: Under the Skin, so I have now spent the past few evenings enjoyably immersing myself in Blacksad's world in a completely different kind of medium.
This is the best video explanation I have seen on Blacksad. I only got to know about Blacksad while recently visiting Brussels, it was in a few comic shops there, I should have bought at least one of the books, even if they were in french.
I started playing the game. Couldn't stop for 4 hours. Wonderful story telling. I love animals so I had to download it immediately. But beside that. The themes the acting. Was all 9/10. The only downside was all the loading and the wonky controls that took a minute to an hour to get used to. Other than that. Fantastic. All around. A solid round of applause from me
After zootopia, I've been interested with other horror mystery stories featuring anthropomorphic characters, and will give this on a try. "Life Mate" series by LittleRag Doll (TH-cam) was another great project that was fantastic. Also, that outro go hard!
And yet Hollywon't churns out part VI of This Schlock and a third reboot of That Shiite. Great video. I'm in day three of a Blacksad reading binge and need more... just a little more...
I have nothing but the utmost respect for the creators. I still remember How the first page immediately captured me when I randomly picked up Arctic Nation in a comic book store. I love how, as a reader, you are able to deduct what is going on in different scenes in advance by looking for details and clues within the pictures just like the detective is picking up details and clues in the story. Mixed with depiction of cultural problems which are still relevant to this day I consider these true masterpieces. Lots of love!
Fun fact. As far as I uderstand: black sad comics are first writen in spanish (the authors language) the, are translated to frensh (their main publisher and audience) and the it's the frensh version that get's retranslated to all other languages. It's amazing that in such game of telefone, the stories still come up as impecable as they do
That last volume's title is a pun on so many levels. Amarillo is the name of a place the character visits(from what I've seen in the video), amarillo is yellow in Spanish, and the car being transported is yellow. I just found that to be very clever
Excellent video I got to start reading blacksad I'm a huge crime noire fan weather it's comics or film I love it you got to put blacksad in the same category as sin city by frank Miller and the azzarello/Rizzo crime comic collaborations like Johnny double 100 bullets and more recently moonshine
As a fan of graphic novels, and even HUGER fan of film / crime noir, I am now a Blacksad fan. Never heard of it until the game, now Im buying the comics. Doing both at the same time, could careless of spoilers - I love it anyway. Thanks for the video!
I still believe this could be animated the same technique used in Spiderman New Generation ! But let's face it this is pure masterpiece in its comics natural version.
I do admit if we get a blacksad animated series or a game done by telltale game based on the past graphic novels we so need JK simmons for the role of Blacksad
@@RabbitShirak true but after playing it my copy on the switch kept clitching and making me redoing the game over and over again but if telltale got the rights and used adapted the past stories into a telltale game it could be better and i feel JK simmons would be a good fit for blacksad
Just found your channel yesterday and i've already subbed and turned on notifications. You deserve a LOT more subs than you have dude. Can't wait to see you grow.
if anyone's still interested in the future of the series, books 6 and 7 apparently have a french translation and english one in the works currently, but no release date has been announced, there was a rumor that they were to more involve the police more so than usual, similar to the latter half of the game, but 2020 happened, and that was thrown out the window, dunno if that's true.
As fantastic as the art in Blacksad is, I do have one minor complaint. I've noticed that women in the comic who are meant to be love interests look less like anthropomorphic animals , and more like human women in makeup or a costume. Like at 4:19 and 4:24. Hell, in the latter, you could take John's head and remove the cigarette and it would work fine on the body of a four-legged cat. Whereas his former lover has a very human face. The contrast always struck me as weird. I get that Guarnido is going for a stylized look here, but in my opinion it contrasts in an uncanny valley kind of way when that kind of look is so wildly inconsistent with how everybody else looks. IMO it also downplays how beautiful more anthropomorphic designs can be, which is a shame! Because Guarnido's anthropomorphic character designs are some of the best and most expressive I've EVER seen.
Exactly! This is the only issue I can find with the series. While all males surely look like animals, all the “hot” women look like humans with an animal nose and ears. Many of them don’t even look like they have fur. Of course it’s the artist’s choice, but it still looks weird, especially when your pair these women with the men.
So in that make everyone be humans and delete that everyone smoke cigarettes in time story told in so should delete All That make it so good are and make it be Like evey other detective stories already exist If want to read that read those 8nsted for see it how it is and Just Not change all For be like not should be 🤔❓
This reminds me of a music video by "caravan palace". Quite a beautiful music video. If anyone reads this comic, PLEASE check out the music video. It's definitely worth a watch
go figure when you're not on an insane time crunch, your art gets waaaayyyy better.
Love this series so much
As an avid comic book collector and a fan of Noir, this totally sold me on the series. Excellent work.
+Mauricio Escobar Awesome! Thanks so much and I hope you enjoy the book when you read it.
I'll have to look for this series. People who look down on anthropomorphic animals in comics should check this out.
