    It would be interesting to add the reason why in Japan's main island all the largest cities are on the ocean side (Pacific) instead of in the continent (sea of Japan) side, unlike almost every island in the world.
    The Japan Sea coast also has large plains (Echigo, Kanzawa, Fukui, Toyama, Tonami plains, etc.) with rich soil, thriving agriculture, cheap energy, easy access to raw materials and a well developed industry. Despite that, the heavy snowfall caused by the cold fronts from Siberia meeting the warm waters from the Sea of Japan has always made life in those areas difficult, isolating these cities from the rest of Japan every winter. The combination of a fertile but isolated area can be seen on the higher prefecture income and family savings on the region.
    Interestingly, on the south island of Kyushu, where snow is not a problem, the large cities are all facing the continent (China/Korea) instead of the Pacific Ocean.

    It's quite ironic that the lack of central planning allowed Tokyo to be the biggest and densest metropolis in the world. No strict separation of land use into residential/commercial/industrial, no minimum parking requirements, not nationalizing most of the commuter lines (which keep them competitive and actually spurred the growth of bed-towns developed by the train operator companies themselves), no strict building regulations (which lets the market quickly adjust to housing demands). The private train line ban from entering Central Tokyo (i.e. within the Yamanote Line) unintentionally created new city centers at the termini of the lines e.g. Shinjuku. And when new planned towns were build on West Tokyo mass transit was factored into, and the private train companies extended their lines into these towns.
    Sorry that I sound a bit repetitive. Tokyo is a very fascinating place for me in terms of its infrastructure.

    • @ollielon5926

      Also helping was that when building expressways, they didn't wreck entire neighbourhoods, because they couldn't afford to. And also it wasn't about enabling every citizen to commute to work every day, as oppose to the US.

    • @zaired
      @zaired 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      City growth does require a lot of planning... There is good planning that was limited but useful unlike in the USA where there are way too many laws.. a lot of them are based on racism and car abuse! Cars are good but there usage needs to be limited a few uses...

    • @johnathin0061892
      @johnathin0061892 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      American cities needed those expressways, they didn't just build them because they were bored

    • @mukrifachri
      @mukrifachri 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yeah. Where I live planning (well, planning enforcement) is nearly non-existant, and as a result things just go wild. But still in a bad way.
      I have to say one of the good things with japanese urban expressway types is that they allow trucks to access the city centers separated from the pedestrian-dominated local roads. Their narrow nature prevents too much vehicles from using it, and their expensive tolls makes it not that attractive to use for private vehicles (unless they're really rich). Combined with good public transport, you've got yourself something highly desirable.

    And Tokyo continues to grow in population as more people migrate into the city. One factor in its continued growth is the changing demographics. Japan's population is turning more elderly as they increase in percentage. Cities offer more social services and access to healthcare that they need.
    One thing that Americans would be most shocked is that everything is smaller, the streets, houses, cars. Yet it is surprisingly livable.

When there is a hurricane going on, you won’t need to bring an umbrella and still won’t get wet.

    Just a little thing to improve your Japanese pronunciation is that Japanese is a syllabic language where each letter has the same sound each time
    for example Tō ku ga wa
    There should be some videos on youtube on how to pronounce all 42 the characters thats only 10 mins long

  • @blacksaturn1
    @blacksaturn1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @City Beautiful thank you for your videos but I have been avoiding this one for some time as foreigners rarely get Japan right. As a rough overview, I give the video a thumbs up but I do have problems with some of the explanation details. My biggest problem is that you continue to refer to Tokyo City after WWII. Pre-WWII there was a city called Tokyo City. The name changed from Edo (pronounce like the male name Ed+o) to Tokyo when the emperor changed his residence from Kyoto to Tokyo ("kyo" means capital, or where the emperor is located. The character is 京. Beijing=北京, North Capital Nanjing= 南京, South Capital Kyoto =京都, means Capital City Tokyo=東京, East Capital; pronunciation shortened k-sound as in "cat"+yo) Upon the Emperor's arrival the Edo castle and points east became Tokyo City. Post-WWII, Japan re-drew its domestic borders into 47 prefectures (or what Americans would call states) Tokyo is one of those 47 states. The English naming that Japan uses is part of the confusion. The use of English is not accurate nor consistent. The government sometimes refers to it as Tokyo Metropolis, Tokyo Prefecture, and Tokyo Metropolitan Prefecture but the Japanese is always consistent. (A much longer explanation that I will save for some other time) Anyway, Tokyo has 23 centrally located integrated cities (the county and city functions integrated into one entity; similar to Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, and in St. Louis, Missouri area where the counties and cities were merged together). Those 23 integrated cities are sometimes referred to as wards or cities in English but they each have their own mayors and city councils. These 23 wards are what most outsiders call Tokyo City because on the surface they function as one city and are the most central and densely populated. The 23 integrated cities contain what used to be Tokyo City (Chiyoda-home of the imperial palace; Chuo; Minato, Bunkyo, Taito). In addition to the centrally located 23-integrated cities, Tokyo has 26 cities, 5 towns, and 8 villages as well as several island chains that run from Japan's mainland down to the borders of the US territories of Saipan and Guam.
    One last point, "walled cities" Japanese cities were walled. You can see the remnants all over Tokyo. The Kanto (関東)area you referred to in the means east gate. Daimon (大門) in Minato (a part of what was then Tokyo City, was the gate into the city by water and from Yokohama.
    Anyway, not trying to embarrass anyone but I feel the need to correct and add context to these videos.
