  • Public transportation is amazing here! Being Americans, we were surprised with public transportation in Europe, but the timeliness of trains in Japan is a WHOLE NEW LEVEL! Not to mention how quiet, clean and respectful people (and the stations) are! Wow.
    Join us in our adventures around Tokyo! We can't say we didn't get lost at Shibuya square, but we sure had a good time taking in the rush of thousands of people passing by.
    Have you ever been to Japan? What did you think of the trains? Let us know in the comments below.

    I LOVE riding the Japanese trains (the du-dun du-dun sounds, the quietness, even the train station music because it feels so nostalgic to me every time etc.). Especially because I'm German at least by my passport and moved here over 30 years ago. My mum usually falls asleep, even when she is standing (she is Japanese and grew up in Tokyo).

      Aww we love that!! There were so many people sleeping on the trains so it’s fun to hear your mom does/did that too!

    Yeah, Tokyo is _insane._ I was up on Tokyo tower taking pictures of the cityscape going clockwise around the platform...at some point I was like, "wait a minute...", checked my photos, and noticed that I was on my second trip around. The city stretches to the horizon in every direction. You could spend your whole life there and not see everything because, by the time you've seen the last thing the beginning is entirely new. It's fascinating and exhausting, endlessly exiting and mundane all at the same time.

      In my experience, Tokyo is largely overrated. There are many much more beautiful and interesting places in Japan. As a tourist and new to Japan, Tokyo is of course a mandatory stop. It is also a good place to start your stay in Japan as it usually begins in Tokyo.

    Welcome to my busy neighbourhood of Shinjuku/Shibuya! 🙂 It's great using apps like Google Maps and always making connections on time (versus the increasingly common delays of DB in Germany), and if you know your exit number there's generally lots of signs pointing the right way. Looking forward to seeing your experiences with the Shinkansen or the nice limited express trains to places like Hakone/Atami/Shimoda (though reminder for the Shinkansen toward Osaka/Kyoto that if you take large luggage you need to reserve a free spot for the luggage ahead of time).

    Marissa, if you ever travel the rail lines with just yourself and your daughters, use those pink train cars (which are for women and girls only) whenever possible. Yes, I know that one may not think it fair that men and boys over 12 aren't allowed on those (alas not all men riding on trains are gentlemen like Tanner) . However, they're not as crowded as the regular train cars and you & your little one could use less crowding whenever possible.
    Great vid showing the Tokyo-Yokohama area train system and you and Tanner gave some good tips on how to navigate the zillions of different lines and the labyrinths that stations often have (and I look forward to watching your impressions of Tokyo Disney to say nothing of exploring Tokyo San and Yokohama [e.g.check out the Chinatown there])! You may have already noticed but Japanese children take their shoes off if they are climbing on the seats in the train. Also make sure your backpack is in front of you if you are on a packed train because you don't want to hit someone if you turn around.

    • @OurStorytoTell
      @OurStorytoTell  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We actually haven’t seen the children on the trains do that, but I’m sure we will soon. So fun to learn and see the politeness. Great tip about the backpack!

    • @wizardm
      @wizardm 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In my experience I never noticed that. Normally the parents make sure that the children did not step onto the seats with their feet. In general, the Japanese are very careful not to cause offense. However, it is also unusual to criticize others and let it be known that you are disapproving of certain behaviour.

    Just got back from 10 days in Japan with my hubby and my 2 year old to visit his family. Important lesson learned: DO NOT take your little ones on the Tokyo metro during the hours between 5-7pm. We made that mistake coming back from harajuku and were absolutely smooshed. I had to hold my sleeping toddler and had a Japanese salaryman have to put her blanket back on her when it fell off bc my hands were literally full. 😂 Do yourselves a favor and just take a taxi during those hours or plan to be home already.

    I frequently watch a live stream showing the train track leading to the main station in Tokyo. The have 6 normal tracks and 2 high speed tracks there. And there is a train going by about every 10 seconds! If they would try that here in Germany, it would take about 5 minutes until everything comes to grinding halt. Because some train is late, then other have to wait, and because of that more have to wait and so on. The German Deutsche Bahn cals a train delayed if its more than 10 minutes late or so. If a Japanese train is 5 minutes late, the train driver breaks down in tears and wants to commit suicide. Not to mention cleanliness in the trains and such things...

    • @wizardm
      @wizardm 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The english language skills in Japan are for the most part low. Even in large hotels in Tokyo, the staff are quickly overwhelmed if anything goes beyond the memorized English sentences.
      But it depends from the area. In rural areas english did not work at all. One of the reasons for this is that hardly any English is spoken in class. In addition, many Japanese people never travel abroad and therefore do not need english language skills. It's a bit like in the US, where foreign language skills are often very poor because you simply don't need them.

    Tokyo has still a lot of rather classic/old trains running (fat seats/pillows, (wooden ring) holding (like the old Indian trains)) - gives me some classic vibes. Those old fat seats are not very economic but very comfy! Tokyo/Japan as such has a lot of 70-80ties like profane architecture but thanks to its size and many diverse lively urban/metropolis hotspots (and here and there other more intersting architecture beween modern and old) it is a really fascinating city. yep, the trains in Japan are (thanks to own tracks) usually very punctual, but in difference to Germany the regions are less connected. very good in the metropole area (except a few bad designed lines), not as good the more regional you get (and those are also getting more into deficits due to the combination of a shrinking demographics and ore urbanization especially of the youth (like global) ...

      Asia is quite big and diverse. Japan, South Korea and Singapore are for instance not India, Pakistan or Central Asia states or the Middle East and Iran. The Catholic Christian Philippines have a more lively/louder/open culture than Thailand, Japan, Malaysia etc... and btw: technically even Europe is part of Asia - the border/continent is rather more political/historical which often results in to name the whole thing Eurasia.

      @@publicminx There are similarities between some asian cultures, but there are many big differences too. I know Japan and South Korea very well and it's not the same. When foreigners mix it up, it is offensive to Japanese and Koreans.

       @wizardm only stupid people get offended if foreigners mix things up due to a lack of knowledge. smart ppl reflect that there is a lack of knowledge and can differ intentions from that. btw, this is true for most/all cultures. and it is also true for individual ppl (everyone also represents its own culture). idiots: easy to offend. smart and more evolved ppl: not! apart from that, yay, there are differences but the difference between Afghanistan and Japan is bigger (and more significant) than Southkorea to Japan (the cultural impact on each other is also different which every oine could see by the exchange of kpop, manga, anime etc.). and the main topic was about general differences within Asia. there are also differences between Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland. In reality such differences are close to irrelevant compared to the differences to other cultural spheres. that most people like stereotypes and bla bla about every minor differences (like between Bavaria in Germany and Berlin or Tirol and Vienna or Texas to California or US vs. Canada etc.) should not bias to much the view on the grand scheme of things ...

    To be exposed to such music while waiting for the train would put me in a very dark state of mind.. to say it very diplomatic..because actually for me that is cruel torture

      In Japan you hear very often such Jingles in public, for a foreigner from Europe or USA its weird but you quickly get used to it and no longer consciously notice it.

      Public spaces should not be polluted. The only thing you can get dirty is your sofa. Please follow Japanese rules.
