But the attack (the flood of false teaching) was directed at the church as God's home for all His children - the "institution" per se - wherein God's saving power was poured forth upon His children. When this attack failed, as the Lord raised up teachers, scholars, and pastors (think, Martin Luther, and the Reformation divines, etc) to fight successfully against the lies of the serpent, the dragon was further enraged, and (Rev 12:17) then focused on destroying the people of the church, instead of the institution itself.
