Coming from a cfii/mei, you guys are extremely proficient. That start up, systems check, briefing, taxi and takeoff was 100% professional and down to business. Pleasure to watch.
Wow, another outstanding video. I don't know where the time goes. That was the quickest 25 minutes I have experienced all week. You and Brad really click together in the front office. So much valuable information to be a successful contract pilot like yourself, and Brad. Love the radio chatter as always, and I thank you once again for not double timing the audio, lol I hate that. Have a wonderful day.
@@KuostA double timing the audio means, when you put the video on fast-forward and all the voices sound like Donald Duck. Very hard to keep up with a conversation. It has become a fad lately and sometimes it can be very irritating.
Taking the commercial checkride next week. Your vids are so inspiring. A long way to go but videos like these keep me motivated. See you in the skies friend!
Both my boys are in flight school in Myrtle Beach, I sent this video to them. I had just been talking with them about doing something like this a few years down the road after getting more experience.. very informative, great vid!!!
I really enjoy your videos! I regret not following my aviation dreams when I started at 16 but life steered me a different way. I never thought you could make this much money as a contractor pilot. That's awesome!
Great videos.. really enjoyed the preflight brief and checklist run through. Smooth take off . That right seat fellow done this a time or two yet still on task and sharp. More videos with him if possible.
Great video, looks like you and Brad practice excellent CRM as well as just have a chill, fun dynamic. Thanks for the good info about becoming a contract pilot, I suspect it's gonna be a huge help to some folks with that dream.
Hey Owen, try changing the video's capture rate settings from 30 fps up to 120 or maybe even 240 depending on what gopro you are using. That should get rid of the screen flickering or strobing for the displays.
I think this would be the coolest lifestyle. You can make alot of money witch makes having a personal lifestyle awesome but nothing beats working for yourself while doing something you love. I've never flown before but private contractor is the route I'd go. Great content. Love watching videos like this, specially with guys who are very motivational. You make it easy to see the big picture. When your new and have no idea what to do or where to start. You can watch videos like yours and see where the end goal is witch makes taking that major first step alot easier!
This was a great video, I am an experienced 51 year old Instructor flying mostly single engines, and I was thinking about flying some bigger stuff while I am still "young" enough. I don't really want to get locked into a "full time" situation, but the contract flying might just be the thing for me. Thanks for this video!
You need to do a deeper dive where you tell everyone how to achieve the type ratings as an independent. You’re probably going to have to pay for your own type rating (unless you leave a previous job that paid for a type) and then your own recurrent training and then also be sure to file your taxes properly at the end of the year because you’re independent contractor. All super important things to realize before trying to get into this kind of thing. Do you get KCM as a full time contract pilot? I would assume so just never had to think about that since I’ve always been able to do it on the side and my full time gig pays for recurring and takes care of KCM and stuff. Always a good video. Nice landing.
I also wondered how recurrent training goes. Sounds like it’s out of your pocket based on a comment in this video: th-cam.com/video/ffGOsZP3f0k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zIrMcfWkBgzusD1r
If you want it bad enough God will have it ready for you, but you also gotta work and move. Sure it can take time to get it but it’s gonna be rewarding to compensate for the time
Awesome video Owen always love watching your videos you inspire me to quit my job and switch to pilot training full time! Hoping to run into you one day at KVNY that’s where I do my training. It’s awesome to hear my tail number on the video! Keep doing what you are doing thank you !!
You could work just 3 days a week, every week and you’ll make over 300k for the year. I understand there are expenses to include but wow. What a career that’s awesome!
What great informative info for contracting. Almost the same as any other contractor in a different business type, but damn you guys hit the nail on the head. Definitely would rather be a contract pilot for sure. What a great career choice!
Great video. I spent some time at KVNY last Sept and shot some footage for a video about the CL415 Water bombers, that were there (gotta edit that soon). Great experience being on thee field! I'm just finishing up my own command instrument rating. I'd love to fly corporate one day. Making kids videos is extremely fun and rewarding, but not paying the bills 💸😃
Enjoy your video like always, and you always give out great information as well. I just hope I will be able to hire you one day to fly me somewhere I want to go that is more of my dreams. Enjoy the skies.
Here's my question? How old is to old to get started doing this? I'm almost 60 and wish I would have gotten into this when I was younger. Appreciate the content.
Hey Owen, thanks for the great info! You seem to fly out of Van Nuys a lot. I’m wondering: Are there certain airports / areas of the country that are best to operate out of for contract pilot business?
1. How do You decide who is PIC/SIC and who pilot flying/monitoring. (when both pilots can be PIC of course) 2. Did PIC is always on left seat? 3. Are you pilot flying, when seating on right seat? (and how often). 4. Is a difference in pay for PIC/SIC? (when both pilots are qualified for PIC)
Jets don't age much on the outside but they do on the inside. Is new carpet super expensive? I think it would benefit a lot from new crisp black for instance. Maybe new seats. Some of Embraer's 2024 white interiors are pretty snazzy.
This makes me wish I had gone to CA. in the 80's. I was fresh out of the Air Force(not as a pilot) and had been in pilot training before and during my military time. I really think now that people in California would've been more helpful than where I was at that time in helping me make it as a pilot. California was ahead of most of the country back in those years and it seems like you could get more training time in with the good weather in Southern California. All of this is a moot point now 40 years later, but I wish we could go back in time and make changes in our lives so we could live our dreams instead of sitting around thinking about what could've been. I would be ready to retire in a few years or maybe I could be retired right now, just missed out on a lot of adventures not going when I could have.
its nothing like airline flying...much much more demanding flying, uncontrolled airports, bad weather, gps approaches, no approach lights, 14 hours on 10 hours off and thats if you're at the best fractional place, otherwise you have no duty time limits... ect. Private jet pilots should be making $1,000,000 a year at least for that job.
Well, Joaoalves, see if you can stay in touch with Owen here. If you want to transition ove to corporate business jet flying. At least, hopefully, you will be able to make your own schedule from referrals what flights you what to fly. Instead of flying with 200 or 300 passengers in the back of the cabin you would be flying with possibly 10 or 12 passengers in the and one ir two corporate Flight Attendants. Yes, there will be pros and cons but it is what you said that you want to transition to. Again, stay in contact with Owen and his friend here as well.
I want to thank Owen for sharing his passion to fly. And if other pilots want to go from commercial airline to corporate business jets then so be it. There is a lot of travel on the corporate side of the Aviation business. And so since Owen shares his knowledge and has a lot of pilot friends who also fly on a contract corporate pilot free schedule then why not. There are other corporate pilot jobs as well. A commercial pilot my go over to a charter or a client fractional ownership company like Netjets or Flexjets and others. So, there are other ways to enjoy flying and maintaining some great income. Flying a Gulfstream or Bombardier or a Cessna aircraft is not a bad thing at all. There are some great owners out there who need pilots to fly their aircraft. So, yes, Joaoalver has to do some research and ask around to many different pilots to her a good understanding as to how to transition over to Corporate Business Jets.
Any advice on making connections in the industry as a PPL, is just sitting at the FBO enough? Also is there any chance a PPL could look around one of these planes or even get right seat during a flight? Love the vids & TIA!
@FlyWithOwen when is your next time visiting Fresno (KFAT) I’m a 17 year old private pilot and, I know you emphasize working at line services and stuff but everything around me is 18 or older requirement. I would really love to meet you one day!
Do you think there's plenty of contract work and growth for a healthy career going forward? I am in tech and considering changing careers. I am not sure how many years it would take before I would be making decent money again. Your office definitely has a beautiful view. Love the videos
Thanks for yet another interesting video! How does it work flying multi crew with different contract pilots for different owners and operators. Is the checklists and callouts different from operator to operator, or is it standard for the type of aircraft? How much preparation and studying is required before you show up for work?
I love everything about aviation except flying... My career was in industrial maintenance. I understand Electrical, Hydraulics, Hydronics and Control systems and what can go wrong, that's what worries me.
Currently in A&P school. My dream was always to fly and my medical was delayed at 18 years old so I thought I could never fly. How often do you work compared to a commercial airline pilot?
Why are the thrust levers not set the same while in cruise?

Is it possible to match the throttles and activate N1 sync?
