That album has two other incredible power ballads, 'In A Darkened Room' and 'Wasted Time'.
'Slave To The Grind' is legitimately one of the greatest hard rock/metal albums of all time. Sebastian's voice is almost supernatural.

      @RolandDeschain1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@Ghost I remember not liking 'Subhuman Race' when it came out because I wanted 'SLAVE... Pt.2' But listening to it years later I think it's a really strong album, despite it sounding a bit too 'grunge'.

The album Slave to the grind is a masterpiece and almost never talked about.
Sebastian Bach is one of the best singers in rock history.Another singer that is totally set aside is Jeff Scott Soto from the band Talisman.

Absolutely agree that Slave is a masterpiece. I personally felt they just kept getting better the more the original lineup played together. To me it was like the 1st album was more about getting their "pop-ier" material out of the way early on. Even tho its definitely good, its not a fully true representation of them. Then with Slave it was all about "ok, now this is what Skid Row can really do". And Subhuman Race just continued that process to me.

Even though Skid Row came out in the late 80’s they stood out from all the other bands. With their second album they REALLY stood apart from everything else out there by combining more heavy guitar riffs to the melodic song structures with their unique aggressive approach. If Grunge didn’t take over bands like Skid Row would have dominated along with the more trashy street ready rock like G n’R.

They did a freaking awesome album called Winter Rose with LaBrie on vocals, you must check it out! Peace :)

Nice mention of Tesla. The Way it is, off of The Great Radio Controversy is one of their most underrated songs. I also loved Hang Tough. I didn’t mention Love Song, since everyone knows that one, but one thing I can say about the version on that cd is that the acoustic intro isn’t cut out like in the radio edit everyone heard, and that really makes the song. I hate any version of that song without it.

I thank u two for the wishes and honest reaction!
A little lost word wise. 😢
    BTW Kel...I just turned 46. 😜
I hated the 'Hair Metal' years.
I now respect and appreciate much of what I disregarded then simply because, well cuz that's what age and (hopefully) wisdom can bring.
I fear today's youth will have little or nothing to fondly recall when they reach our years.
Like a restaurant menu with no actual food in it, an SNL broadcast that's not particularly funny or a football game with a 3-0 final score...what will they consider nostalgic?

Another awesome reaction from Kel & RIch. Why has NO ONE ever reacted to this song before this?? For me, it's one of their swansongs. Rachel's lyrics alone are poetically perfect. Sadly, all I've personally ever seen are 'I Remember You', '18 & Life', 'Youth Gone Wild' & a couple 'Wasted Time' reactions. BTW...that song is amazing as well. But what about all the other great songs off the first 3 albums with Sebastian?? It's truly sad to recognize that in all probability we're never going to have anything like this again in the rock & metal genres. Bands like Skid Row, Queensryche, Maiden, Priest, Dio, & even into the 90's with Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Dream Theater, etc with ridiculously great vocalists. Even Stryper, whether u like their Christian mssg or not, they crush live. Don't get me wrong...every generation has great artists no doubt. I absolutely love Alter Bridge, Sevendust, Korn, Avenged Sevenfold, B4MV & Disturbed as well but there's still something from that earlier time that's been lost & now gone. Myles Kennedy IMO is one of the only stand out vocalists today that has any real semblance of that time-period. To the younger generations...I truly feel bad for you because you honestly have ZERO idea of what you missed out on...

The Slave to the Grind record is a substantial record. It is actually a lot better than the debut (and i loved the debut). This record came out as the wind was coming out of the balloon for this sound. I actually rather blame the never ending singles that came out from the Illusion records for exhausting the palette for this style of rock. I loved GnR too but they just kept coming on and on and I think people got to the point they wanted something else.
Also, this song is the big ballad and excellent but it isn't representative of the Slave to the Grind record. That record is much heavier bordering on thrash vs the first record and lent itself to the direction the band would go after grunge captured the interest of the people.
Loved your reaction and that Rich dug it, too.

Rachel Bolan Interview on May 24, 2011. The question asked was "Is Quicksand Jesus about religious tension or bouts with faith?"
Bolan answered: You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I grew up in a Catholic family and so did Snake. You know that good old fashioned Catholic guilt. It’s just about keeping your beliefs during good times and bad times. It’s so easy to not be spiritual when things are going really good and then when they go bad you start relying on whatever god you pray to to get you out of it. It’s kind of saying that whatever it is you believe in, you should probably put in 100% all the time. We started writing it and war broke out in the middle east. The lyrics just started pouring out but we did not have a title for it. Snake and I used to do a lot of dirt bike riding and we knew we wanted “Jesus” in the title but we could never really settle on anything. There was a busted Jesus in Snakes mom’s flower garden. The garden was there right before we took off to go riding on the trail and every time it rained the Jesus sank. We called it “Quicksand Jesus” and what we would do is touch it for luck and then we would take off. If someone would wreck we’d say, “You forgot to touch Quicksand Jesus didn’t you?” One day, we just looked at each other and said, “That’s it! That’s the song title!” That song was a labor of love. Snake and I never had such a tug of war on certain parts and elements of songs as much as we did with that one. That one took us a long time to write. It’s cool that’s your favorite song because that’s my favorite Skid Row song that we ever did. I’m proud of it and I’m so glad we still do that one.

I left school in 1990 and this album came out around that time, maybe a year either side, but is still awesome. Not one bad song all the way through.

I was a 1st grader in '87-'88 and totally relate to seeing all the other (in my case, much older) kids wearing Skin Row and all these diff band shirts and leather jackets and mullets lol... So once I hit 5th grade and comprehended life a little better, I couldn't WAIT to dive into all this good shit that is rock/metal! ALL these years later, it hasn't left! ANY ONE ever says that this style is meaningless, I tell'em it's as fuckin real to me as the air we all breathe!!! \m/

Slave to the grind is Skid Row on top. Best album of 90's and one of the best records ever made. Sebastian's voice was supernatural.

#painintheask Could you check out "I Will Remember" by one of my favorite guitarists, George Lynch? It's a beautiful instrumental off one of his earlier solo albums called "Sacred Groove". George plays with a lot of emotion and feel in his guitar playing. He has an amazing tone.
