The part where you say you are camera shy and then jump out of the way of the camera actually made me laugh out loud! I just recently graduated from a fine woodworking course called Studio woodworking at the Okanagan College in British Columbia, Canada. One thing I have learnt about us woodworkers, is we are pretty shy/keep to our selves, outgoing at times, but like the freedom to do our own things. Keep up the good work!

Another great piece I love the burl pattern in the wood. It gives it almost as if the fox was a gray and brown fox breed.

One tip. If you are using movie maker, in the top right corner under captions, a free upgraded copy of movie maker will have an option to outline size and outline the color of your text. A medium outline in black will greatly improve your text and make it easier to read. Very nice pennant. I enjoyed your video and the quality of your craftsmanship earned you a sub. God bless you and yours.

Jonas this another stylish piece, not too much detail,l to make you see the foxes mask, and what makes it so nice is the stain and Danish oil which I feel brings out the beauty of the different grains in the wood, and gives the impression of the foxes fur. Well done you picked a good piece of Burl. Thanks for sharing your gift with us, regards from John in England.

Jon if you really want to bring out the pop in the burl you should try practicing with dyes a bit. I always taught that You wipe on a dye and then a quick washcoat of shellac followed up with the stain of your choice is the best way to go so you can really bring out the color in really figured woods. Shellac is really good as a sealer if you know how to thin it out. Stains are used to pop the grain and Dyes are used to accentuate the actual color of the wood.

@@Jonasolsenwoodcraft great work there, some more tips, i have worked alot with burls and i find that you go even higer on the gritt with some 800 or even 1200 you pop out the textures and formations even better. when i soak my knifes in linseed oil i heat up the oil to about 60-80 degree centigrade and let the peace sit there for about 12h, then you can acomplice a see true effect on the wood. it looks like a glass pieace. that mabe not what you whant for all wood to turn out but it really pop ut on some work. great work and fun to see skilled persons work with wounderful wood cheers from Sweden

Wow, just wow. I was holding my breath, on the tiny parts, lol. I am just a beginner, I started working on wood that I use to find on a walk. One day I picked up a piece, and that was it ! It has been 3 years since that day. Watching you at work, I just hope I can make something close to this. And I am nuts about wolf, I am not scared of them ether, lol. Anyway thank you for a great video, no worries about being camera shy. I have social anxiety.
There is something so special to me , when I bring a piece of root, and I just clean the parts eaten by bugs, and amazing shapes come to life. All the best !

Fantastic work. I would highly recommend investing in dust extraction or making a small extraction booth to work in. When I was training to be a carpenter one thing we were taught was that PPE should never be used as a first line of defence, but the second, or preferably third line as an emergency backup.
It's worth it, I've seen and heard of some truly depressing incidents.

I like that you are camera shy. It's nice to see the process in detail and you do this beautifully. I like the style of your video very much: close up, no music; it makes it more of a meditative process and is soothing and calming -- thank you! I am concerned about the amount of dust in your workshop, though; surely it can't be good for you, and doesn't it impede your work?
You have made a beautiful little wolf there, I like that very much as well. I'm off to your website to see how much they are and look at what else you make :-). The beautiful scenery adds even more to what you are doing.
Keep it up: you are successful for a reason: people like what you do and how you do it!

Personally do you think this would be a good first carving, I just got into power carving and need something to get my confidence up.

    • @Jonasolsenwoodcraft
      @Jonasolsenwoodcraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Personally i think you should go for whatever you feel like trying to carve. Your questions makes it seem like you are afraid of failure, as most humans are, including me!
My best advice would be to just set a timer. Try to carve for half an hour and dont think too much about the result. Then do this multiple days and if it feels correct, increase the time. Also take breaks if frustration builds up and go do something entirely different for 5-10 minutes.
And this is very important: Not all types of wood are suitable for carving, In fact many types pretty much can not be carved because of its hardness or sapp content. So if you choose the wrong type it will be very damaging to your motivation. You should do a quick google search for which wood is most suitable for wood carving. In this video i am using birch burl wood. It is not unsuitable, but not the best either i would say. That is why i often stick to a certain level of detailing in my work. If it is possible for you, i would try to get a few different types of wood and just try them out to see what is best.
But back to your original question. The design in this video is ok to start with, but it is symmetrical and that always increases the difficulty.
Lots of good luck to you!

    Hello,
I plan to make a video about learning wood carving, and I would like to replicate your fox model to learn the basics. Would it be okay if I show it in the video? I won't show it step by step, just some frames of me carving it and the the end result to sum up what I learned during the process. I would of course say it in the video that it's your model and I'll credit your channel in the description.

This is such a beautiful piece. I love the video progression, very informative, straightforward, and a little humor that is much appreciated. I learned a couple little things that make things easier. That scroll saw is a beauty! One day I too will hold Excalibur. Thank you for posting, I look forward to the rest of your videos.

I leaened the hard way kind of. I actually cut myself a lot with knives when i was young, but in my adult life i have become a very careful person when i work with dangures tools

I'm still a bit of a teenager heading into college soon, and working with wood has always been a hobby for me. Maybe I could make a shark pendant I don't know but anyway I enjoy watching your videos. They're entertaining and they give me ideas for my own wood projects as well.
