- Today we're taking a first look at the latest local legend for Microsoft Flight Simulator - the Dornier Do 31E. It's a fascinating aircraft, with an interesting control scheme - designed to combat two crew controlling two pegasus engines in the original aircraft.

Note - have learned a lot more about this aircraft overnight - will be back with a full run-down on operating it :)
So essentially, Inibuilds have given us a flying norwhal. Great video, Jonathan, as always.
Okay, I think I figured it out. Jonathan, your outboard nacelles were never operating. Once the main engines are running, you use Throttle Axis 3 to put them into the Start position, which can be easily seen on the pedestal. Once that’s done, the two aft fuel switches, which are very close to one another are thrown, and this will get the nacelles fired up. From that point, using the third throttle axis will lift you up just like a UFO! 🖖😀
Yep - I figured that out last night afterwards - I'll come back to it and do a longer video about the various helper modes too.
Thanks for the video! Hopefully you'll give the plane another try soon. As others have said, it doesn't look like your lift jets were operating because you should have more than enough power for a vertical takeoff and you shouldn't get stall warnings when transitioning back to a hover.
The additional thrust and attitude control of the 8 lift engines is modeled, as are the tail thrusters. The aircraft is certainly a handful but it's a lot of fun to hover around in.
I'll have another look soon - I realised that too after recording :)
Great video! Pegasi?
The devs stated in the discovery video that there isn’t any overrides of the FM and it’s all vectored thrust.
For $9.99, I had to buy it. I’m confused as to why you couldn’t take off vertically. My plane will lift off like a helicopter.
@@B1az3ikinUpon further study, I may have forgotten to turn on my other fuel switches. 😳😔
I’m getting an old school Flash Gordon vibe.
Despatch War Rocket Ajax!
I learned about this plane from Man in the High Castle
Thanks for sharing, as always. This isnt my style, and wont make it into my hanger, but is nice to see a good video.
Same!
@@hondarider100r same for me
Would love a follow-up video about this aircraft and perhaps with a more in-dept review of its history!
I have seen lots of old planes but never heard of that one before.
this is a cool plane but unfortunately the often significant limitations of the simulator greatly spoil planes like this.. Hopefully the new 2024 version will have a vastly broader support for unique aircraft like this.
It was partly down to me - and not realising that the aircraft wasn't quite configured correctly. I'll be recording a much longer video looking at it in more detail, and working through procedures for take-off, landing, and so on.
Why do I get the feeling US Navy aviators love this thing?
Looks more like a Star Citizen ship than real aircraft
So the simpit guys want to know if you can pop out any of the gauge systems? Sucked into the 146 a few weeks ago and it feels like FS98. No pop outs.......
Thanks for this! Task overload takes the fun out of flying IMO. I can see why there where only 3 made. I am happy with my Caribou.
Hello! I see you have the "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080" with the intel i7 , is it the "6700" or the " 7700" CPU? How do you like this video card? Did you see some bottleneck between the 2? I have the i7 8700K with the GTX 1080 Ti card looking to see if the RTX 3080 would make a difference. Would appreciate your comments!
This plane looks so weird 😂
Just found this " th-cam.com/video/-NMNJKHnW9Y/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Belatu42 " apart from the background muzac, this real helicopter pilot does a really smooth job with the DO 31...................................................
Have you tried this in VR?.
Pity the oleos are not modeled and no inertia when you land on the landing gear.
Wow, as ugly as it is hard to handle.
Hello Jonathan, what scenery are you using for the airfield?
