The main reason why the K was discontinued was because it was under used and would only run weekday only, No Late night nor weekend service, there was just no use for it just like the Z or the 9 trains.

@@believer5497 How am I wrong tho the K was very confusing and barely anyone knew about it because of its bad schedules and low rider ship ON BOTH BMT Eastern AND 8th av and as YOU had mentioned the worse of the R1/9 fleet back in the 60's/70's the Nassu/6th av was never the JJ since the line in BMT Eastern WAS Cut Back it didn't run to canarsie and the 6th av K Train was replaced by the (F) PLUS AFTER the 63rd St tunnel opened F trains where ABLE to go to 21st St then after the F was cut back in 2000's B and Orange Q trains went to Queensbridge 21st and then B trains were sent to 145 to Brighton while Orange Q and F trains served the station. Now the TRUE K line (Don't say I'm lying) Ran from 168th S to Hudson Terminal Now Chambers St-WTC DURING the Mid 80's the MTA was going through a Capital Money Crisis due to Graffiti which cost the MTA a fortune to get trains Cleaned. The C on the other hand keep't Running on 8th av, the C REPLACED the K train due to the MTA making Plans for route switching (Later on the B and C would switch Their Northbound Terminals) which since the line ran rom 145th St (Bedford Pk Rush Hours) to Euclid av as it HAS been SINCE 1948 the E was cut back to WTC to do service TO Jamaica Parson Archer which OPENED in 1988 so MTA discontinued the K service due to Budget Cuts.

The AA (later K) was an oddity in that it did not run during rush hours. During rush hours, AA service was replaced by the BB (later B) from 168th Street to 34th St-6th Avenue (later Coney Island-West End) and the CC from Bedford Park Blvd-Concourse to Chambers Street-Hudson Terminal (later Rockaway Park)

There are many now long defunct double letter subway lines; one was the Rockaways HH; another the mostly forgotten "TT" (don't remember its exact route), dropped in the late 1960s, possibly due to weird, uncomfortable or just plain humorous conversational issues when mentioning or giving directions to someone to take this line, e.g., "take the A to Columbus Circle and then take a TT," and so on...think about it.

    Kids don't know anything.
    LOL.
The KK was on the R27/30 rollsigns labeled as the Nassau st line.
It was the BMT 14 service, that operated various times during the day.
When Chrystie st first opened after Thanksgiving 1967,the line was named JJ and provided rush hour service from Canarsie or Cresent st to Canal st.
It replaced the QJ during the late evening nights and weekends.
This went on until the second portion of the Chrystie st subway opened in 1968.
Again, the JJ and the filler route RJ,were discontinued.
The new KK line was sent uptown to Midtown, along with opening of the new 57th st station.
The KK operated 6Am to 10 am..230 pm to 630 pm between 168th st,Atlantic Ave or Eastern Parkway.
This service was well used at first..however it's downfall was many factors, ALL the fault of the MTA.
The rush hour only option didn't address the crowds at Delaney st,nor the need for all day service that pretty obvious from the beginning.
The line was also assigned the very worst of the R1/9 cars..often late..often broken down..often used to make service for the F line when something went wrong.
When the 1972 service changes kicked in January of 73,the M was sent to Coney Island, replacing the QJ,which was cut back to its original terminal at Broad st,then renamed J...
The KK was also cut back to Eastern Parkway, and renamed K.
The K service didn't improve, and since the city was looking for any excuse to cut service where ever they could, the K ,EE GG and other routes were on the chopping block.
The reason the TA gave was "low ridership ",and that August of 1976,the K was discontinued.
An full analysis was done, showing the MTA reasons were in error, and the TA brushed it aside.
The real reasons were as followed.
The MTA wanted to "reduce its overall responsibility" and planned to remove most elevated rail lines,or.reduce services.
The lines were intentionally operated with substandard equipment, suffering from lack of maintenance.
While air conditioning was available for some routes, none were operated on the K.
The service was operated in such a dismal manner, it practically chased away ridership.
Late trains, trains not showing up for intervels...train being taken out of service for very minor reasons...or displaced to pick up the slack in F service.
This caused havoc along the Eastern Division
When presented with this, the MTA immediately denied sabotaging the line.
Nothing came of it,and the service along the Eastern Division only got worse.
At this time, the MTA was trying to finish its new route plan.
All routes were "under deferred construction ",meaning even the lines being worked on halted all work,so a study could be done to see if some cost could be cut.
The MTA couldn't follow through with its plans to remove El lines..but Did remove some, promising to replace them with subways.
    That never happened.
The 8th Avenue K was a rebranding of the AA local
It operated at all times, until 1977,when night service was discontinued.
The MTA wanted to eliminate double letters for route names.,and since they couldn't use A for the local 8th Avenue line, they chose K.
    The service didn't change.
In 1988,the 8th Avenue, Fulton st service changed, with the opening of the Archer Avenue subway.
The K was merged with the new C 8th Avenuelocal, that now became an all day route, operating between the new 145th st terminal, and Euclid Ave or Rockaway Park weekdays.
Evenings and weekends, the line operated like the old K line. No night service.
Today, the M line had replaced the K line on 6th Avenue, and has been a hit with riders ever since 2010.

If the K train were to come back, they would have to construct the Utica Avenue line. The K would be running express along CPW, 8th Avenue, and Utica Avenue.
They would also have the V return to serve the local stations along Utica Avenue (and run along 63rd Street instead of 53rd, which will be handled by the F), and the M would be rerouted along the majority of Phase 3 of the 2nd Avenue line, with the T, but after 55th Street will run with the V along 63rd Street towards Forest Hills-71st Avenue.
In addition, the J will be extended during rush hours along the pre-2010 M rush hour route to Bay Parkway, running local with the R and along West End with the D, and the Z will be eliminated entirely. The G will still terminate at Court Square all times, but might one day be extended along Northern Boulevard towards Cross Island Parkway.
That’s what I believe will happen if the K were to return.

  • @qolspony
    @qolspony 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The K to 168 Jamaica to 57th Street was the best version that was implemented. It served a much larger purpose than it should have at the time. Because it offered no real advantage than the current J service except it was a one seat ride into midtown. There's was no skip stop service as we know it today as the J/Z lines.
Eventually we got 2 "B" services out of this, which at the time made more sense.
Than the AA becoming the K, because of transit officials switching away from Double letters.
The double letters signified local service. Single letter was express.
But both the Single letter "N" and double GG (14) served as local via Queens Blvd local. So the redundancy needed to be corrected.
The AA ran outside rush hours, which was how we got the two "B" services. It ran only 4 60 ft cars , while everyone ran 8/10 cars depending on model cars. It was definitely a service reduction from what we had than and what we have today.
We got 8 60ft cars with the K before the B and C was put in as all day services.
And full C service eventually led to A being express in Brooklyn beyond rush hours.
I know this because during this time, I lived in the Rockaways or lefferts Blvd area. It was quite common for a train to take nearly two hours to get to a destination. Almost as long as a flight half way across the country.
But at least living between the "A" and "J", I had better opportunities. "A" train during the morning rush, because it ran express and I could get a seat. But if I was working late, it was the E to the J. The walk was a little longer because I lived at 117 Street and 97 Street not 121st Street. And there was a paid entrance at 117th Street.
So I would wait for the uptown E train instead of the Downtown A train.

I couldn’t help but notice how detailed the open bve gameplay is in that when you were pulling out of 42nd street and rolling into 34th street, you can notice the track from the 42nd st lower level coming up and merging with the express track just outside of 34th. The fact that the track is severed in part is really detailed as well. I always thought the E should be express down its portion on 8th avenue to truly live up to being the homeless EXPRESS. I will also say that the 8th avenue express service after 59th street going downtown feels kinda useless. I have the philosophy that express stop gaps should be at least 2 stations.

You missed the 1963 to 1965 run of the KK from Canarsie to Canal Street rush hours only. The JJ also ran rush hours Canal Street to 168th Street. After 1965, the KK was discontinued and only the JJ ran - to either 168th Street or to Crescent Avenue. In 1967, the JJ ceased operation and was replaced by the RJ. The RJ ran for only 10 months, and was replaced in 1968 by the KK, which ran from 168th street to 57th Street, after the 57th street station opened. In 1972, the KK was shorted to "K", and finally it was discontinued in 1976. At the time, it had been shortened to Eastern Parkway, I believe.

The M use the Chirste Street Street connection to B'Way Laffate st Manhattan But instead of Going to Jamaica. The M/K gose to Metro ave

The K should've stayed eastern division. Unpopular opinion, but actually makes sense once you really look at it.
And yeah, world trade center is really something. Spent most of this week tryna figure out the whole configuration with the A,C, and E

I see why they wen from 'KK' to 'the single letter K'
Because some fool can decide fo add one more letter to make it look not so innocent

Even if there was a KKK train it would still be a lot safer and quieter than Those trains.

I miss the (AA) double letters. If I was transit president I would bring them ALL back .

I would not because the NYC subway is already confusing for outsiders, why make it more confusing. Im a NYer so Ive memorized the entire map, but I still would not want double letters

@@DBSGEEK7 How wud it be confusing? I grew up in that era. The (C) wud go back to (CC). The G, L & R wud go back to (GG) (LL) & (RR). The routes will remain the same there would be no confusion once they get used to this it'll be a normal thing again. Think of how I had to get used of the single letters when they were dropped. It would be slightly confusing to the new generation who never saw the double letters. But the routes will be the same and the color code would be the same just a double letter. That wouldn't be confusing at all. Changing the routes and rerouting lines & changing the station names is confusing.
