    Being a mage that can handle themselves up close is such a fun play style… I can casually walk through areas sniping enemies and when some jerk gets up close and thinks I’m weak, I hit ‘em with my crazy sword and massive magic blade and make them regret every life decision that led them to step to me… haha

      I also thought about other alternatives. Like the Uchigatana katana, or the Misericorde dagger with 140 crit.
      I dismissed daggers though because of the lack of range compared to swords and katana's.
      I'm actually considering a Warhawk's Talon sword, but that's mostly because I think it looks awesome and it scales decent with dex. For crit the Rapier simply is the best option.
      But I'd love to hear how @Fextralife thinks about alternative options.

    Doing this EXACT build, only difference is I'm using the Misericorde Dagger, not the Rapier. The Misericorde has even more crit than the Rapier at the cost of some range. But I try and thin out ranks with stealth before direct engagement.
    Like a Nightblade basically.

    • @RunesofChange
      @RunesofChange 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, same. I've sunk maybe a couple dozen hours with this build, and the Misericorde is by far the better weapon. The fact that you can't slash with the rapier is just too much of a detriment, and the horizontal swing range of the Misericorde more than makes up for the loss in forward range.

    Having my intuition confirmed by you is a big help for alleviating my "build anxiety". Elden Ring's scarcity of runes in the early and midgame and the huge variety of Stuff that gets thrown at you means I'm constantly second-guessing myself in a way the other souls games don't really do to me. So seeing that, actually, I'm most of the way towards a known good build and I'm not actually screwing myself over in any way, and having a roadmap of spells and ashes to go find to complete things, that's immensely helpful. Thank you very much.

    I ran a Build Similar to this for the first half of my Playthrough, though i used the Claymore rather than a rapier. It all went out the window after I found the Moonlight Greatsword.... it Fits perfectly into the Build and deals just absurd damage once upgraded, and its weapon art is Easily the Strongest Iv personally found yet. So now I barely ever find myself using Spells at all and am duel-wielding Magic Greatswords like a lunatic......

    • @SH1NK1R01
      @SH1NK1R01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While I didn’t end up dual wielding I am in the same boat. I’ve since removed all my carrion blade spells and instead got the dark moon and mist and azure comet. Of course pebble always stays. So now I only use the spells for really annoying enemies and otherwise just use the sword with the fp regen talisman.
      Edit: I actually also keep carrion thrust since it gives me some range and fully charged it knocks people down so I can run up. But slicer and greatsword just do less than moonlight now so they had to go.

      @@SH1NK1R01 moonlight doesnt do more damage when you compare FP costs.

    • @SH1NK1R01
      @SH1NK1R01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rf5510 yes it does. Each cast of any of the spells listed requires more fp while moonlight only requires a single cast and repeat hits are free. The only time carian greatsword is better is if you can one shot an enemy with it but if you could do that than you don’t need to buff moonlight for that enemy making the comparison moot. On enemies that require multiple swings of carian the animation lock and fp cost don’t match up to moonlight. Remember that moonlights buff window would allow for well over 40 swings, if done non stop. You claim it doesn’t compare based on cost but even surface level comparisons disprove that. Adulas moonblade at least has an argument due to its longer range higher damage, and the frostbite, but even then it’s only used for cleave aoe.

    I recommend Moonveil right hand + Uchigatana Magic infused for left hand. I have 24 dex and 33 int atm destroying everything.
    The main reason for dropping meele mage was Scholar's Armament. I can't be bothered to shuffle my spells for it and be vulnerable for 2 seconds only to deal less than double Katana magic infused.

You have to keep in mind it's lower range(slicer), no stagger opposed to L2 + R2 skill on moonveil that has very high stagger damage and you can bait bosses that will act a certain way into the moonveil attack. Found using jump, dodge or simple L1 with double katana to be very engaging and fun opposed to buffing my weapon for every trash mob.
      Pretty sure FP for damage Slicer wins but burst damage at once Moonveil is miles ahead. The greatsword I really disliked as it takes ages for animation and costs too much. Same reason Sword of Night and Flame appears to be useless, it's good if you want to spam farm runes though, no real(difficult boss) will give you time to get an attack out.

    I'll make one addition. You mention using a shield to parry, there is an ash of war carian something and it works as a regular parry, but if you parry an enemies spell with it it forms 3 of those blades then fires them at a target. So if you wanted to add to the theme you ha e going with magic Swords, that would be a way to add more with a shield, especially if you don't need your staff because you're using an enchanted main weapon.

    Your builds are fantastic. I've tried most of them and they're all a blast. For this build in particular I really like to miscorde because it can do all the things the rapier can do but it has a higher crit rating. The rapier is probably a better all-around weapon and has better range but if you really want to min-max this build I recommend the miscorde for that extra 10% on crits. It can still have keen glintblade phalanx and can be buffed with scholar's armament.

    I have done some testing, and it seems that Scholar’s Armament does not apply to critical hits. It applies only to regular hits. Therefore, on a build looking to take advantage of critical hits, going with magic affinity on your weapon instead of going with Scholar’s Armament seems to be the way to go. Your regular hits will be a bit weaker, but your critical hits will be much, much stronger.

    • @LetMeGetAUhhh

    I have a few changes I would make to the build, and have what is IMO the best magus build.
    first, a few notes on the strenghts/weaknesses of a magus build. The stat spread is pretty MAD. You need vigor, stamina, mind, intelligence, and dex, so as a result, you end up having a lower vigor than other classes at the same level, and having slightly lower damage. This is offset by your versitility. You can use magic, or get in and nuke someone with your weapons. This build is a jack of all trades, but has some serious weaknesses. My build aims to offset some of these.
    Attributes: 17 vigor, 17 dex, 20 mind, the rest into intelligence. With this spread, you get a decent chunk of health (see talisman's section) while hitting your 20 breakpoints on your other stats. You then don't delay your main attribute progression on intelligence very long so your damage doesn't fall too far behind other classes.
    Weapons: ugikatana, and claws (you can use the best claws you have access to, but eventually you will want bloodhound claws), and take whatever staff you like. I prefer the carian glintblade staff for the boost to glintblade sorcery.
    On both melee weapons, take bloodhound step, because the huge mobility is very important with your low health. This also lets you dash around the place throwing spells if you are struggling with a boss. The katana should be either magic or frost, and the claws should be keen. This gives you a powerful weapon that doesn't require FP to use, as well as your claws which when you use scholar's armament on, will have both weapons get the buff instead of just your main hand. This also gives you both huge single target damage (claws) and good crowd clearing (katana)\
    Upgrade your staff and katana first as their scaling with intelligence, and so matters more, then upgrade your claws.
    talismans: Here I like to take radagon's sorseal, graven-school/mass talisman, and pearldrake talisman. The pearldrake talisman and the radagon's sorseal are both used to kind of offset the "increased damage" taken from radagon's. radagon's sorseal is so important, because it gives you +3 to dex and vigor, allowing you to use those 6 points to pump your intelligence. The increased stamina also lets you equip heavier armor, so the increased damage actually doesn't mean much. graven-school talisman is just for increased damage from claws/sorcery. You also rarely will run into FP issues unless you are going full castor for a hard boss, in which case just switch your flasks. You have katana for trash mobs, so you don't need to spend much FP to clear zones. You don't need a talisman for FP increases/cost.
    armor: Here is where the build gets a little weird. You have low health, but high resistances to non physical attack, so heavy armor will round out your defenses to physical attacks. Because you have bloodhound step on both weapons, you never actually have to dodge, so fat rolling doesn't matter. As such, you can wear the heaviest possible armor available to you as long as you don't go to overloaded. You will still be able to run at full speed, will use bloodhound step instead of rolling to dodge. This makes your small healthpool much less of an issue, and gives you huge poise for a caster.
    Finally, Morgott's great rune (when you unlock it) is excellent because it rounds out your low health pool, turning you into an extremely tanky boi without spending points on vigor. until you get this rune, radahn's rune is the best before this.
    Spells: I pretty much only use scholars armament, glintstone peble, and loretta's longbow. Everything else doesn't really do enough damage to justify it's FP cost, and this build really comes down to FP management. You need to save enough FP for your dashes, as you won't be able to dodge anymore when it runs out, so things with low cost are generally better. Loretta's longbow is something I almost never use, but when you do need it, it is nice to have it. Carian retaliation, lucidity, and frozen armament can also be situationally useful, and are worth taking when you get more memory stones. Terra magicus can also be nice when you get it to extra buff your scholar's armament, but this is only worth doing before a fight starts, and not after the boss starts.
    summary: with this magus build, you get all the benefits of being a caster, while still being tanky in melee range even without a shield, and are incredibly mobile. You also have a good weapon versitility as some bosses are better with a longer weapon, or jumping heavy attacks for stagger with katana, while others the claws will outperform. You also have the option of switching to magic when needed.

      Did having the sword magic instead result in higher damage than using scholars armament? I found once I got enough points in INT having the sword Keen was just resulting in less potential damage than if it scaled with INT

    • @nayber2352
      @nayber2352 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fissefiesta8162 No, I take the sword int so I can kill things without having to spend the FP on scholars armament. it would be more damage as keen with scholars armament, and it would give you more bleed damage, so there is a trade off, but I think it's worth it to be able to consistently kill trash mobs without having to spend FP.

    As a note, the cerulean knife is a flat 15 fp on a crit. If you switch out the rapier for the sacrificial axe, add hoarfrost stop and ice quality, and add in the horn talisman, you will not only get 15 fp per crit, but an additional 7 fp per enemy that dies. @@Kiosade I wouldn't consider it wasting 5 level ups at all, but if you are wanting to keep your level and Str low, remember that two-handing this weapon with your Str (assuming it's 11 from your comment) allows you to wield it. So staff in left, use phalanx like the video and two hand for your crits and actual attacks. You also don't have to USE the axe to gain it's passive, just be holding it. It works whenever ANYTHING dies near you. Here is a quote from the wiki. "FP regen happens when ANYTHING dies while you have it on an active weapon slot. I prefer using rogier's rapier with bloodhound dash. You loose that extra crit, but this can be fixed by taking the fp on kill talisman. bloodhound dash is just so strong, and is probably the best ash of war in the game. rogier's rapier is better than a rapier because you get the double hit for the strong attacks, which is super strong in combos with light + heavy repeat. You can get 3 very quick hits off and then dash away. You also get the fade away hit with light + heavy/roll so you can dash in, hit, and fade attack for free.
