People really have no idea how complicated water treatment is. Grady over at practical engineering has a great couple videos on it that dives even further into it.

Yes! I have a friend who manages a waste water treatment facility. I found it so fascinating I pleaded with him for a tour of the facility. So stinky, but so dang interesting. So much science going on there, and most people don't even think about it.

Honestly, when I was a kid one of the thoughts that kept me up at night was “what if one day we run out of water, since the water we drink turns to waste and water is abiotic so it cant reproduce???” I don’t know why I never realized how water gets recycled 😂

It goes back into the environment

So why are you concerned about drinking recycled and purified poop water, don't worry your water is perfectly clean.
The FDA in the U.S ensures its clean by running regular quality checks, looking for any potential contamination risks and trying to fix what they find, and ensuring that your water has no shit in it.
Also if you understood what ultrafiltration was, have a groundwater well, or if you had any brains google ultrafiltration and it'll tell you why you don't drink shit everyday.

Great and Simple explanation @PoorpumperSociety. it's not just about pumping the tanks and mixing a pump smoothie but it's about knowing where this dirty water goes also and gets cleaned prior to being released into the environment. Great job!

I used to work at a water treatment plant that used a DAF system and let me tell you about getting suited up to clean out the floatation tanks once a month it actually wasn't too stinky but the slime made it a massive slip hazard. Really liked that job driving to the storage tanks taking chemical measurements monitoring flows and pressure some tanks didn't have digital meters so I'd get to take a drive at least once a day

Im an electrican and had to work at an old plant like this. Worst part wasnt the smell, it was the ducks. Ducks would swim in the water and get spooked if you walked near, flying over your head and getting that water everewear

Our local plant used to further process the solids which would go on to be mixed with the green waste from our green waste garbage bins to create a mixture used to create souls and fertilisers sold by local garden centres.

You forgot the last step, which is to remove the bio-solids and spray them on a farm near you, both for the sensory enjoyment of the whole community for miles around as well as to make sure that, generations from now, that soil will still have elevated levels of heavy metals in it to contribute to whatever crop is being grown.

So I know it’s weird, but I’m really great full one of my middle school field trips was a visit to our local poop plant, and while it was the most foul smelling place on earth, we learned SO much about how they filter the scum, the engineering behind it all, the chemicals used. So mych great teachings from the company and their staff on such a gross, but important topic. It’s better to know where it’s going, than just leaving it and being done with it. Actually very interesting work

The sludge, which is leftover is usually pumped into centrifuges to be de-watered, where it now takes up less space and called cake. That cake is either burned and sent to the landfill or just sent to the landfill. They used to truck this stuff as fertilizer, but it needs to be processed further. That is too expensive.
