let me tell you why some people think the mini car guy is an actor, because his oral english and listening is too good, especially as an driver. Usually only young people or high educated people can say english. It’s kind of “suspicious”. And some western media have bad reputation for doing some like this.
@ Of course not, he’s just a normal veteran who happens to know English. Probably he learns English by himself, since a lot of foreigners live in Shenzhen. Most importantly, he is an open minded guy, and not shy to speak.
@@LastFlightOut Yes it was a fun vid. I've only been to Shenzhen twice (plus HK) and found it quite familiar in that many peoplke spoke english with lots of things reminding me of the 'West'. I've traveled and visited many parts of China and I Lived in Sichuan (SW China). for a few years and it was amazing. But.. in a practical sense, can we retire in China..? I've yet to find out. I feel it would be like a long, long Holiday. You can never be a citizen - then there's health care, global political issues.. it's a long list however, China is an amazing place and the people are generally lovely. Keep up the great work and maybe you can sell some hammocks to resorts on the island of Hainan !!
I am no China expert, only been there twice. I did enjoy it, would like to see more ' rural places 'and eat much more of the food. I dont think it is retirement option for me, I like to color outside the lines a little bit and that does not go over well in China, I feel like I could easily get into trouble there or get on a black list :). I was a little relieved after I got through customs/security on the way out.
@@LastFlightOut Yep the rural parts are an amazing experience (plus the food !! ) but unless you can speak some basic language you would need a native with you. Yep there are many rules for foreigners to follow and would be easy as you say to get into trouble but I can totally say that the media in the West paint a far worse picture than the reality is in day to day living. So even if you dont retire there it's a great place to visit and travel around long term if you can, especially the cost of living compared to say... the UK currently.
Let me tell you about cockroaches. Cockroaches live in southern China. They are seldom seen on the street. They usually live in dark corners. Cities will regularly disinfect and kill cockroaches. At this time, people may see a large number of cockroaches and cockroach corpses on the road. You may have just encountered this situation. I have also encountered it once. The number is very astonishing. In China, we always say, "When you see one cockroach, it means there are a hundred more inside." This is used to describe the strong vitality and reproductive ability of cockroaches, which are difficult to deal with. Chinese people also dislike cockroaches. Even bold northerners will be scared into little girls tiptoeing and shrinking in the corner when they come to the south. In short, I hope you have a great time in China. :)
This old man is very strange... Most Chinese elderly people don't speak English so well. I think he may have lived in the United States for a while. His Chinese accent is from the Northeast (I am from the Northeast, I know it very well). Veterans who participated in the Vietnam War received high subsidies and generally did not need to work very hard. Of course, there may be some other special circumstances that he did not describe.
@ Thanks for the clarification. I’ve just retired too recently and hope to be able to escape the Canadian Winters by going to Xiamen, Fujian Province. Good weather :)
it's a hot place, it's hard to control roaches ... even places like Malta, Japan, Australia are choke full of gigantic roaches ... nothing disgusting about them, just a reality of life
@LastFlightOut A large number of cockroaches came to the streets during the day because the city government disinfected and cleaned the sewers, causing many cockroaches that usually hide in the sewers to come to the streets, because cockroaches usually hide in dark and damp places during the day
I'd advise you not to casually eat street food in China. About half a year ago, there was an incident involving edible oil being transported in gasoline tanker trucks, and there still hasn’t been a conclusion on it. While Chinese braised meat and hot pot are undeniably delicious, they are often made using processed food waste. As for coffee in China, it’s not the same as what we drink in Europe or America; they add chemical flavoring to it. Young people there also commonly have high uric acid levels, mainly due to diets high in oil, salt, and sugar. Food safety standards are quite low, even worse than in the U.S

How did you get permission from the Chinese government for a long stay?
After all, it's not easy to even get a 6 months tourists visa to China.
