  • I hid from the headlines for seven days
as if drunk from the water of Lethe,
    mythical river of forgetfulness.
I hid from the headlines for seven days,
each day easier than the one before,
    no temptation to doom scroll.
As the fog of headlines lifted
I could focus on an evergreen horizon,
    the crisp twilight air
    pungent with wisps of pine,
    and harmonizing songbirds
    from treetops far above.
But as the week drew to a close,
    headlines roared, reignited-
a firestorm screaming in all caps.
My vision blurred with their return.
Defenseless to the flames I gasped
    with Lethe’s waters spent.
