  • The new AXX series of 1U drum modules from XODES may well replace my TipTop Audio 808 3U modules. In this video I compare the Kick, Snare, and Hi-Hats modules.
How similar do they sound? How do the interfaces differ? Which should you get? (Spoiler alert: they're both awesome, but have different use cases)

    Thanks for this comparison video!
These were not meant to be 100% replicas of the originals, due to some technical constraints, so there indeed are differences yet the 808 spirit remains.
The absence of Accent input was mostly due to the 6HP width that was decided at the very beginning, since these were imagined as "set and forget" modules, to quickly add drum sounds in a system.
About the Rim, Clap, Cowbell and Cymbal, prototypes do exist, and these should go into production soon! :)
And finally, you're pronouncing XODES the right way ;)

Oh totally: the extra jack for an accent would make them too wide. Love the 6hp footprint. These are such an impressive piece of work, and one of the best managed Kickstarters I’ve ever backed. The detailed updates throughout the whole process made me feel like I was part of the journey. Great job (and I will insta-buy the clap and rimshot when they’re released)

@@TomHazledine Thanks! It was a bit hard to keep the updates from being too technnical sometimes, so glad it made you feel this way!

amazing!! I'd Love to fill out my 808 kit more than just the Kick Snare and Hats,
but always have to prioritise the space differently. An expanded 1U drum range would be so useful . Please keep in touch about how this develops

@xodesnet @TomHazledine Is there an efficient way to emulate accent using as few other modules as possible? Maybe through a filter with a different CV hitting the cutoff through the use of a clock divider?

@@VinceFinemMusic Why not simply use a VCA? Set the initial gain to your liking, and send a gate to the CV input for your accented sounds...? 🤔

Great demo. I live for that basic meat and potatoes 808 snare sound❤️

Never thought I'd hear When the Levee Breaks with an 808 kit, but it works

Accents are super important for me. The grooves just not the same without them!

No dynamics negates the point of 1u size for me. It just leads to extra vcas.

Nice to finally see some compact drum module as a full drum machine is the same size as the palette case although probably cheaper than filling it. For simple drums I just use a squid salmple as everything is just in one place but accents accents accents, cough, WMD drum wallet emptiers, cough.

Still sounds great with the compromises for the space. Kinda wish you could perhaps have different trig/gate levels to generate an accent perhaps. My drum rack now feels overkill :D

the lowercase greek mu represents the "micro" (10^-6) power of an SI unit, while nano is simply a lower case n (10^-9). Great video though ^^ very helpful, so pay the pedantic comment no mind

Haha - every day’s a school day. That’s exactly the kind of attention to detail I’d hope for in my viewers. Top marks! Genuine thanks 😊
