One of the most underrated aspects of the original Final Fantasy is that the rate of random encounters is very moderate. The Dragon Quest series was notorious for throwing another encounter at you one step after winning a battle, which got both annoying and frustrating. But Final Fantasy very rarely had this occurrence unless that specific tile (like in front of a treasure chest) had a set encounter.

I've always thought that FF1 was originally meant to be a sort of "DnD Simulator" where you and your friends make the set of characters together and play the adventure, especially since alot of games back then were designed to be almost toy or board game- like

Not the mention the monsters in FF1 are ENTIRELY pulled from the AD&D Monster Manual.

Too bad Int and Luk weren't programmed in.

Well, that's what the antidotes are for, if you're willing to buy everything one by one by one by-
oh, I already used that joke

This was one of my firsts nes games, so I remember it fondly. I played it with the instruction manual, if course 😅
    Great review!

Great review, but I have to disagree with the final rating. This game was a 10 for its time in terms of an RPG. Sure, it’s dated by modern standards, but it really set the stage for everything to follow. If you haven’t, go play the first Dragon Warrior on the NES. It came out about 6 months before Final Fantasy in Japan, if I recall correctly. This game is so far advanced from that that you’d think it was a different generation.
Games at the time were full of grinding for exp or money. It was a way to extend the play time, when memory limitations restricted what you could fit into a game.
Additionally, keep in mind that the game came with a manual that guided you step by step through 3/4 of the game if you bothered to read it. It wasn’t quite as obscure if you read the manual.
Buying one potion at a time was always terrible. I bought a 4 Score just for the turbo to deal with that.

I'd say 9/10. I loved it, but there were still problems.

@@mountainmgtow5421 There were definitely things that could be improved, but that’s always the case when you’re breaking new ground. When the game launched, there was no RPG that could compare to it.

I ain't seen Final Fantasy (Despite having its NES version and a working NES) in a very long time. My TV makes it look just ungodly.
Just recently went through the Pixel Remasters......its a little shocking to see the difference between 34 years ago when I played it originally and now.

Side note......why does everyone complain about the grinding of the original? It was perfectly fine (And normal) in that time.

I wrote and recorded this script a few months ago, and I don't think I knew about it at that point! I definitely agree with you.

I hate the Pixel Remaster version. It's a poor remake. I love the original, though it is pretty broken. But that is the one that hooked me as a teenager in the early 90s. But the best version imo is the Playstation version Final Fantasy Origins. It fixes a lot, adds quality of life improvements, and has a difficulty selector for Normal mode and Easy Mode. Every other remake after just gives you the Easy Mode with no option to play the game as it was originally intended. So, PS1 gets the win for me.

Monk x3 and a Red Mage is the winningest party.

I prefer fun, challenge, and variety to min/max optimization. I want to be able to use most of the weapons and armor I find and be able to cast many of the spells in the game.
