All the best for his future sir you parents are very great for making this event this special. Even my parents made my upanayana event in this way big at age 12 but unfortunately they didn’t made me teach how to perform Sandhya vandanam. Now am 23 at my personal interest I’ve learned with finding guru. Please you guys don’t make that mistake let him learn and be strictly to follow theses nitya karmas. Because I’ve realised that one day big event is not main thing but after it starts on. Hope your kid practicing nitya karma daily not so please find some well knowledge priest near. Thank you

so in North here we have mundan (hair shaving), chhedan (piercing) and janeu (sacred thread) ceremonies separately.
but i see in south it's all on one occasion.
