Viola is bigger, is tuned C G D A, as opposed to the violin’s G D A E (from lowest string to highest), and has a warmer sound. It’s role in an orchestra is typically much different from the violin as well.

@@lawlaw9176 Maybe more suprano and alto, at least in terms of range. The viola’s lowest string is a fifth lower than the violin’s lowest string.

Range and instrument thickness… it is much easier to tell on larger speakers and in person. Think of Viola as and alto instrument (Jennifer Hudson/Adele) and Violin as a Soprano instrument (Beyonce/Ariana Grande)
