  • @ThunderboxMusic
    @ThunderboxMusic 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +172

    #16 is not a glockenspiel, it’s a marimba! A glockenspiel, also known as bells, is distinctive for its high pitched sounds, and its keys are made of metal. The marimba has a larger range, going well into the bass clef, and it has a more mellow sound due to its being made of wood.

    • @RtsShrtFrRtthw
      @RtsShrtFrRtthw 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      the instrument on the left is a vibraphone, and the one on the right is probably a xylophone.
      glockenspiels are far smaller than vibraphones, and marimbas have a softer tone than xylophones.

    • @merlin7794
      @merlin7794 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @@RtsShrtFrRtthw youre right about the vibes but that is 100% a marimba. xylophones typically have less range than vibes (the marimba in the video appears to be larger than the vibes) and you absolutely do not (or rarely ever) use 4 yarn mallets on a xylo because xylos don't play chords, and they're not made for soft mallets like that (and will hardly produce sound because of the shorter resonators), while marimbas are. also just in general most mallet percussion duets are written for a vibraphone and a marimba.

    • @magicweaver2886
      @magicweaver2886 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As someone who plays the Euphonium, and is in a brass band, that is not a Euphonium, that is a Tuba. It is simply playing higher in it's register than you might be used to hearing. Additionally, tuba's can have the extra valve that @phineas1117 is talking about and come in several different shapes/keys. The way to tell if it's a Euphonium is by the size (usually don't have to stretch to reach around it, and the bell will be at head height when resting on your lap (not the chair). It is also higher in pitch than other tubas (yes I said other, since the Euphonium is technically in the tuba family), but the tone will be slightly different in the overlapping registers (it will sound thinner on tuba than euphonium in the tuba's upper register)

      For me, there are only some slight nuances within specific ranges of instruments that make some instruments of differing families sound similar (sax/oboe for example)... but for the most part, I hear instruments sounds pretty much distinct to a specific family, so it really didn't matter they were grouped by family. I find it harder to recognize same family instruments, unless their top or bottom extremes are played.

    I got 14 out of 20
    Ones I got wrong were:
    Viola (didn’t know what it was because I’m not familiar with strings yet)
    Cello (thought it was double bass
    Xylophone and Glockenspiel (thought it was either marimba or vibraphone)
    Flute (thought it was clarinet)
    Bassoon (thought it was clarinet)
    Oboe (thought it was alto saxophone)
    Everything else thought I got right

    As an orchestral composer, I got them all but fifteen and sixteen, which were playing with soft mallets, which is not really representative of their sound. As an orchestral percussionist myself, I think it's a horrible example. Both are generally played by plastic or hard rubber mallets. Glocks use metal mallets a lot. They sound almost like marimba and vibraphone.
    Number one was also a piccolo trumpet, or a pocket trumpet.

  • @jacobhanekamp2534

    6:37 There are 4 common mallet instruments used in Orchestral settings, and you had 2 of them in this video, and you STILL somehow managed to get it all wrong. The 2 instruments present are Marimba and Vibraphone. Xylophone has a very sharp staccato sound, and Glockenspiel has a very high pitch to it. If you think it's hard, its not. All you have to do is 5 minutes of research and you will know the differences.
