That's what I was thinking! My other fave vocal powerhouse, Mike Patton, at least did voices for some video games. Maybe someone already did approach him, but we all know how Dev is - if it isn't music, he's most probably not gonna do it. 🤷
@@NopeNoperson As for as I know he just isn't into speaking with words that aren't his own. That was one of his problems with the Steve Vai album he sang on - it wasn't his words, and therefore he struggled to emotionally connect with the music. Atleast that was one angle he had on it in an interview I saw somewhere. He's such an "artist" that he needs to follow hos own artistic vision, and why wouldn't he considering the huge, diverse and complicated musical output he has. It's not like he is in need of new ideas and such. It seems that he's always writing on stuff that shortly after will turn into one or more albums. As for voice acting, he did the whole Ziltoid thing including the video series, and yes, he did different voices for some of his wackier projects, but I also think that's it. He's kind of a one trick pony. I couldn't imagine him doing some cartoon character, even though he has said to kind of dig the big Disney productions, which is what partly inspired his song "Why".
fat mike from NOFX does that too sometimes 😂 the crowd cant keep the tempo and its fuckin hard to play like that so i think i would be pissed off too 😂😂
Yeah, was thinking the same. Saw him with SYL (along with S.O.D. almost two hundred years ago) and it was a different Devin back then. Quite over-the-top lunatic, but SYL were great for what it was. He moved on and thats probably the best.
man i remember this.. my 2006 at download i had drunk waaaaaay too much the night before devin woke me the fuck up for the rest of my weekend.. even to this day nearly 20 years later this is still one of my favourite memories.
Devin is by far one of the most talented musicians on this planet. I don't love all of his music but he is incredibly talented and can write songs like no other.
Ha, I was there. Had never heard of SYL before seeing them - this was pretty early on the first day too - but still vividly remember this set. Awesome.
@euchre90 He handled it all brilliantly nonetheless. It's an iconic show. I think he threw up right after the show or something, he practically got physically sick from anxiety...
He's pretty lucky that his version of anxiety is to be a crowd-pleasing madman. I can't imagine what things were like behind the scenes, but at least it translated well on stage.
@@Cyrax89721My ex had anxiety, it's truly a horrible thing. Not everyone can be in crowded places. That crowd was huge, bet that induced the vomiting.
The first time I saw SYL, they played at a small club in Dudley, opening for The Wildhearts. Dev was exactly like this when he was onstage, but when I managed to catch a few words with him later, he was lovely. A really sweet guy.
I was there and witnessed this live. Great days. I'm glad Dev laid off the drugs and got himself sorted out, but this intensity is unmatched in my opinion. Awesome stuff.
I was in that crowd and consider it an honor to be screamed at by Devin Townsend while he assaults my ears with that heaaaavy shit. I'd never heard of them before this, I was waiting in the crowd for the band after them, they came on, Devin called me a cunt, and a massive pit opened up all around me. Best live set ever, been obsessed since.
Good shout and that's some statement; this Download had some top tier bands on the bill, agree this was possibly the best performance of the festival! Devin gave literally everything here....
Same. If I remember correctly this was the year that they tried to put a one-way system in place between stages and I was stuck behind a large barrier in a huge crowd of people all trying to get to the main stage. It may even have been at this point that people ended up knocking the barrier over, but by the time I got to the stage SYL had just left.
Heavy Devy probably one of the best there is no matter the era, Skullet era was peak Heavy Devy but I’m loving his latest Experimental Era, Hell there is even the casualties of cool and snuggles era for when you just need to escape. He is by a long shot the person on this planet I would love to share a hot beverage and a chat with
Casualties Of Cool might be one of my very favorite things he's done. I literally needed an album like that at the time when it came out & it just blew me away like none before...
@@NopeNoperson empath did that for me, I had been listening to all the old stuff again and not really paying much attention and then he released the video of him watching his own video for genesis and that was it, that was the Devin we all know and love, mad as a box of frogs and so comfortable with it
I still love looking back to this show, this set, I was there, and remembering how much of a let-down Tool and Deftones were. And how much of a defining moment in my life this SYL set was. This was SUCH an amazing performance.
This was my introduction to Devin/SYL. It was about 11am or something and I was hungover as fuck but my friend demanded I went to see him. And I'm glad I did!
Saw SYL at the Masquerade in Atlanta. Got to meet Gene Hoglan. I am 6ft tall and he towered over me. Devin even took a picture with me. I wish i still had it. Both great musicians and very nice guys. Will never forget
This brings me joy ❤😂
i still don't know how no one approached devin as a voice actor

He did voice acting on Ziltoid though 😉
@@SyntheticFuture I wish we'd get even more Ziltoid, although we admittedly already got a whole lot of Ziltoid.
He did some voice acting for Metalocalypse cartoon. Just some one-time characters, but still.
Mid-2000s Devin was absolutely unhinged
“There’s 10 man for each man here tonight…” i almost choked laughing at this
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
And this is just in ONE SHOW!
Yeah, Dev is quite prolific when it comes to comedy. He would've been a hilarious stand-up comedian.
That"stop clapping" had me dieing hahahah😂

So this is where Rockstar got inspiration for Trevor from in GTA 5
😆😆😆
Its a canadian thing
He's also the inspiration for Pickles, (Dethklok's drummer) from the Adult Swim cartoon, Metalocalypse.
It’s where I got the inspiration for my hair.
But Devin Townsend is badass haha
I'm glad he's doing better both physically and mentally these days but man, SYL-Era Devin was HIM.

"Stop clapping" gets me every fucking time
I'm glad the great Jackie Daytona from Tucson Arizonyyya approves of Devin's humor.
"STAHP CLAPPING!"
*claps intensify*
"You're so belligerent! :D"
This guy has charisma that is beyond our realm of understanding.

Great stuff - I was down there at the front right, such a good time - glad to see the footage survives :)
This is both hilarious and kinda sad at the same time, I remember Dev said somewhere that he was very distressed at this show

Where can I get details on that show? What exactly was going on with Dev back then?
@@ani1kindev did a series of podcasts where he talks about each album, I think he talked about this show in the new black podcast
This was my favourite concert that year and maybe my favorite concert I've been to ever 🫶
Forever cemented as a legend.
This was my first time seeing Devin Townsend and I've been a fan ever since. What a show this was!
Was lucky enough to be in the crowd for this and whenever I watch any of this set back it takes me right back there. What a weekend!
Exactly the same! I just remember thinking 'Who's this angry dude with the skullet?!' and then getting my ass kicked. It was so damn good.

devin townsend is fucking AWESOME!!!!
Gene Hoglan trickles perfect doses of double bass the way a master chef trickles salt.
Ha! I was at this one... My first introduction to Strapping Young Lad and Devin. Twas a good gig! 🤘
no drugs were harmed in the making of this video
To think this man writes some of the most beautiful music of all time.
Love that set, I watch it a few times a year at least.

Fact- Devin is the greatest metal frontman ever
Hahahaha this whole thing had me dying laughing. I don't know why this was recommended to me just now but I'm glad it was.
I wish I could go back in time to see SYL live. And DTP!
I was there for the greatest download lineup that weekend ever
I love that I was able to see some of his humour during Sounds Of The Underground 2005! All Hail\m/ SYL \m/
I love how Devin has been a huge nerd from the very beginning.
Love this dude. He's both a genius and hilarious.
Nothing but love for this amazingly talented c***!
I was there. It was epic.
I was at the gig shown in the first part of this vid. Download... My goodness, that was a legendary set. All hail Heavy Devy!
Skullet era Devin was my first experience with him and can confirm, he is God
Devin might be the funniest musician I've come across so far. Then again musicians not always primarily known to be particularily funny
Best video I watched all day. Thank you kind sir.
Don’t you just love him, this was the best set at download that year. It was strappings swansong

Thank you, brother. Been on a Devy kick tonight 🤘
The contrast of new devin and OLD devin is crazy 😂
thank god, finally TH-cam's recommend algorithm works well
I love this guy! ❤❤
I was at this concert, it blew my fragile 18 year old mind. SYL is amazing.
I'm near the front row 😂 This was fun. My first festival after leaving South Africa to live in the UK.
He's such a funny and weird guy xD
Never ever delete this video.
I won't...Unless my channel gets banned, then it's gone for good.

Devin what an evil genius, I miss SYL so much.
Dev at his best! This double sided personality was awesome from a creativity perspective
He definitely harnessed it!
I need a sound board of this
3:47 Devin really hates it when the fans start clapping out of time.
I got Devin to give me a hug right before they went on stage once, Byron called me a fag. Good times.
Devin makes me proud to be bald, absolute savage on stage, I miss Strapping.
I fuckin loved this era Devy. Dude was in full beast mode🤘
I never knew about this. Now I'm mad that I'm happy.
This was a great weekend, and SYL were beasts!
He dedicated a song to the Loch Ness Monster when I saw him 😂
Devin is fucking awesome
devin townsend is an adventure game npc made by tim schafer.
I was there actually.
One of the few festivals I've been to.
I was like who is this crazy mother fucker.
Respect
Saw this guy with Steve Vai in the early '90s(??) I was sorta shocked at the off the wall banter and it was an ear splitting show
I love this man 😂
It took him a long time to have his stage persona mellow out a bit, this being already 13 years after Vai's S&R.
Fantastic!!!❤
The death metality is amazing! 😂
He was the Jim Carrey of metal 😆
He still is, still goes hard 😂
He even made a Jim Carrey reference if you pay close attention here.
