Recurve Bow Building - A Sweet Cherry Selfbow

- Crafting a traditional recurve bow with the use of handtools. It was my first try at sweet cherry (Prunus avium) wood bow. It eded up pretty great! I left the one sapwood growth ring on the back, and heartwood on the belly. I love this bow, it's drawing 45-50lb at 26". Truly a sweet shooter. As a tips overlays and arrow shelf I used cow horn.

nice bow I like the color of the wood.
Thanks! So do I!
Another beautiful piece.
Thank you sir! Appreciate it!
That's a real fine bow man!
Appreciate it!
Are you going to post it for BoM?
An absolute Beautiful looking Bow it looks also as if it was a pleasure to make. Gotta keep that Sweet Cherry in mind it's got some pretty bark. You should make one With Bark on as a bark backed bow. 🙌
Thank you! Would be cool too!
Looking into making my first recurve bow! thanks for the video man, looks great!
Good luck with your build! Thank you for the comment!
Awesome job 👍👍
Sehr schöner Bogen, mit dem du dich wieder mal selbst übertroffen hast. Vielen Dank für die Mühe die du dir damit gemacht hast! DTdkf.!
Thank you my friend! Greetings from Poland!
As always my friend great craftsmanship, a supurb bow congratulations and greetings from this small rural town somewhere in Mexico.
Thank you brother! Greetings from Poland!!
Excellent work!
Thanks, appreciate it!
Really cool piece of wood, what a great bow!
Thank you! Appreciate it!
Just opened latest Primitive Archer to check on Butch Stone, and read your facinating article. Long story short, yout latest subscriber. Keep making videos!!!
Thank you sir! That means a lot for me. Greetings from Poland!
Beautiful bow, you dont see often bows from cherry wood. Almost thought it was yew in the first moment ;D
Thank you sir! Yes it looks a bit similar with the contrast between heartwood and sapwood
Awesome bow! I really like the cherry wood and the design!
Thank you sir, appreciate it!
Love it.....nice work
Thanks a lot!
Awesome 👏👍👍🤘.. and it looks so easy 😉
Thank you!!
I love this design. Simple but elegant! Ever try Zap-A-Gap CA? It's extremely durable. I tend to use it on hardwoods such as walnut(custom microphones) but it works well on most any wood. No affiliation, just a strong preference! Congrats on 15K subs, btw!
Glad you like it! Thanks for mentioning that glue, haven't tried it but I will. Thank you for support, all the best sir!
A good design...and very good execution of technique!! A good bow for many occasions!?
The 26" draw, is about right for many...they just don't know it...or...care! Just used to the
" standard"...Which, if ya look at it, is not...what you need... some are 27", some are 29" ....many, if they use "standard " draw technique...really do well at 26- 28 " draws!!
Jus sayin 🤷!!
👍🏹🧙♂️🏹👍
Thank you sir! As always, I appreciate your thoughts.
Such a beautiful bow
Glad you like it!
Really lovely work, well done!
Thank you sir!
Really nice bow
Thanks, appreciate it!
excellent as always
Thank you!
Could you make a video on how you sharpen your cabinet scrapers? Thanks. Needless to say, the recurve you made is awesome.
Thanks for the comment. To be honest I don't feel confident enough in that topic, I often struggle to sharpen it properly
Beautiful bow man! One question, why did you opt for a 26" draw instead of the standard 28"? If I'm correct, you could have removed another small layer off of the belly and increased the draw length without affecting draw weight, right?
Thank you! For higher drawlenght, the bow should be longer. I decided 26" is the safe drawlength for this particular wood piece and design
Mate I love the artistry in your work. But I have to ask what speed are you getting out of your bows? Seem to sacrifice a little performance for beauty.
Thank you sir! Yes, you are right. Best fps result is not always my goal. Sometimes I follow my vision neglecting performance a bit. Anyway you can find some chrono shooting on the channel: th-cam.com/video/1G7W4QBbiHI/w-d-xo.html

it looks amazing, i’m actually wanting to make a bow myself which i’ve never done. are there any tips you have for beginners?
Thank you! Check out my videos from playlist - Bowyer talks
Muy bueno quedó buen trabajo saludos
Thank you my friend!
How long did you boil the end of the limb to make it pliable enough to recurve? I didn't catch that in the video. Or is it more of a feel thing.
45 minutes 👍
Thank you. I appreciate you time. Have good day.
Very nice video
What's your opinion on almond wood for bows?
Well, sounds very interesting! But I have no idea and never heard about anyone using it. But if I had access to it I would give it a shot
Great job! Imo looks like a yew, after reducing sapwood
Thank you, agree!
Nice
Thanks 🙌
How long is the start of the bend for the recurve?
Was sweet cherry a good bow wood, or just average? it seemed to handle compression fairly well.
Well, I can't be sure after making just single bow from it. In that particular case cherry wood did great, so I think it might have potential
It is hard to say with one bow, it’s possible to have a really good stave that yields a very good bow, even when using a wood species that is typically not considered the best bow wood.
You are a great bowyer, keep up the good work. I enjoy watching your videos.
Great bow! Do you think black cherry would work?
Thank you! As far as I've heard (never worked with black cherry personally) it's not that good as sweet cherry
Beautiful bow. How long did you let your bow dry after recurving the tips?
Thank you my friend! Less than 48 hours I think
Really? Thats awesome. Im goona try it on my next one
can you tell me size of thid bow?
Man, that's beautiful! You should watch the channel "John J. RIGGS Archery". In his last video, he mentioned you and your great work!
Thank you a lot! I will check it out. I've watched his videos already a few years ago. That means a lot to me!
