The show is about a society that has lost ability to speak. The first song is about them basically screaming at each other and trying to compete for leadership. Think of each brass section (trumpets, mellophones, tubas, baritone) as a group in this society. It goes into battle for leadership of society. Then goes into ballades where the two baritones on each side of field figure out how to communicate on same level and the entire group snaps and figures it out. , then a dance club party and then think of tubas trying to take control but the mellophones (horns) come up the middle and stop them and final reunion of beginning two dancers and society as a whole.

This is definitely a crash course in the almost 50 year evolution of a modern art form. The Santa Clara Vanguard are just one of MANY corps that have contributed to the transformation from traditional marching band to this here. The fundamentals of precision and discipline are still there, but coupled with modern design/techniques. While it is a competitive sport it really is its own art form.

    • @ZakhadWOW
      @ZakhadWOW 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

this activity was quite intentionally formed to embody the military ceremonial units it is named after, and was **never** intended to be the same as marching band in its origin concept. Those men wanted other young men (later women also) to be able to share the joy, satisfaction, and challenge of performing in that sort of setting understanding that it wouldn't be for all young musicians, with it's stricter uniform concept, military style drill (as opposed to just making shapes like bands do), etc.
Some reasonable and expected evolution was going to take place, but the abandoning of actual UNIFORMS in favor of costumes and in the process the vanishing of headgear are something that is sort of a slap in the face of the founders. 2018 SCV at least had a big V and their corps insignia. 2022 they were absolutely NOT the Vanguard, aside form excellent marching and musical performance.. They could have been ANYONE out there with that white on white crap and nothing reflecting their heritage.
Addition of the Orchestral pit was something that took getting used to, but was clearly only *enhancing* the Percussion element of the activity. That and saving the back of anyone trying to march Timpani drums around. Synthesizers have ZERO business in a musical performance that is supposed to be about Brass and Percussion [thus no woodwinds as in marching band]. An actual Piano would count as percussion, but there's nothing but artificial sound in a synth.
The proliferation and now obscene over use of amplification of the entire performance is just indefensible [soloists are fine, especially in a cavern like L.O.S.]. It is laziness at it's worst.
Also, these irritating as hell long voiceovers/narrations destroy the entire imagination/mood of many of the musical numbers - "Waking The Dragon" 2022 as a perfect example. If your show REQUIRES a detailed ongoing explanation of what you're doing, then it is a program that does NOT belong in D&BC. Hell, that would be lame in Bands of America shows.. See "White Whale" 2023 for en excellent example of minimal voiceover, at only 3 points of show, with minimal wording, all of which serves to help enhance/set the mood, not explain in detail the story being told.

So this show is and isn't hard to follow. If you know the biblical telling of Babylon this show is based on that. The way I interpreted the show is the Chaotic music are the different languages being yelled at. The Breaking News/2nd movement to sounds like the languages trying to align melodically. You even have the soloists doing a similar rhythmic call to each other like they're trying to speak the same language. The ballad the duet starts to gesture at each other with the visual motif we've seen throughout the show. The drum break is them realizing they can communicate using visual language and that brings the world/corps/society together at the end. That's how i took it upon my first viewings live that season.

Hey @ItsMatthewReacts, Drum Corps has been an activity that once originated as Boy Scout or Police troops to bring youth together and help them keep out of trouble, learn discipline and perform primarily in parades. In 1972, Drum Corps International formed and Corps’ through the world formed groups to bring performers from all over the world to go on tour and compete throughout most of the United States and sometimes Canada. A 11:00 show takes about 9 months of preparation and rehearsal, students go on tour from early June to the second week of August while rehearsing in all environments, in the heat, in the humidity, the cold, in the snow, etc. on average they practice roughly 1,300 hours per season. And the goal for most performers aged 16-21 set a goal of marching in the DCI Finals (top 12 in the world). Finals draws roughly 25,000 people, but the performers compete in several states, historic venues and in front of thousands of fans throughout the summer all while living on Charter Buses and sleeping on gymnasium floors. I marched with the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps (Baritone) in 2000 and 2001. I also spent 6+ years in the U.S. Army and DCI was by far much more challenging in a physical sense than the military.

Drum Corps like this one have very high standards in their recruiting procedure. Often with multiple audition rounds you'd have to get trough before they give you a spot. There are more people wanting to join than there are spots available, so you have to be really good to earn a spot. Both musically and physically you have to be in great condition to be able to pull this off.

When you talk about it being confusing but beautiful, you, my friend, are experiencing "effect."
Effect is what all higher American art is about. How is it possible to bring out emotions in someone completely independent of familiar forms. Stories? You can have them but there must be something else, something otherworldly and awe inspiring that makes you feel like a stranger to the world again, and inspires wonder. That is what drum corps is for.

"Corps" (pronounced core) has nothing to do with "corporation." It is a body of people engaged in the same activity, as in 'the press corps.' Drum and bugle corps have been around for many years in the U.S. They started as paramilitary organizations and spread into the Boy Scouts. Today, most all are privately run organizations, but a very few are operated through schools. Competitions are fierce, and the rehearsal schedules are intense and grueling. Unless it is a senior or all-age corps, a member "ages out" at 21 and can no longer be a member. Check out some of the older videos (1960s - early 70s) to see how the activity has changed and evolved. Anaheim Kingsmen was the first Drum Corps International champion in 1972. It's worth a watch!

Ok so let me help you sir. The music here is hand written based on a concept. The kids here are 17-21 years old. They have to try out for it. They actually pay for the tour. I don't know how much it is now but for me in the 80's it was about 5k. The hardest thing I have ever done in my life. I did it for 3 years. This is NOT marching band. It is it's own thing which is "Professional Marching". This particular show won this year the DCI World Championships. No small feat.

Musicians can now upload their audition videos by the several hundreds to try to get in to some of these top corps.(pronounced 'core')
They glean the finest talent from the high school bands, college bands, and music schools across America and frankly the world.

It's more of an art form, with constantly changing speed, music and moods. Order out of chaos, perhaps. You have to be 21 or younger to audition, and many of the kids do in fact march with their high school or college bands during the school year and then march drum corp in the summer. They tour the country and get to perform in many towns and states. Many are studying to become music instructors themselves. The band is judged in several categories to include the brass section, percussion section, color guard which includes the flags and the rifles. It’s very competitive and these young people work very hard. This is comprised of kids between 14-21, though a lot more are on the adult side, and it takes place over the summer everyday while your not eating or sleeping for maybe a month, and then you go on tour to different cities across America till champs in august in Indiana where you either are practicing, eating, sleeping, bussing, or at a show. College marching band practices, and even high schools, will do band camps where it’s about 1-2 weeks of daily practice, but not where u sleep in a gym right next to the field(at most housing sites). It’s fun though 10/10 recommend the experience

Want a great show that really shows off the parts of a drum corps? I HIGHLY recommend The Cadets 2007 "This I Believe".

Matthew, these members are actually between 16 and 21, and we say 'core' for corps, strangely enough. Sadly, although I'd have liked to watch the video, I gave up when I fast forwarded, and found the the volume was never turned up to where I could hear the music.

it's because corps is a french word pronounce core and it's like a section of an army or smth

DCI is kind of like a revers NFL it actually costs the people that do it thousands of dollars to participate in it but they are the most dedicated people to marching bands practicing 13 hours a day for weeks until they start the tour then they cut down to 6 hours a day and sorry but I have to correct how you are pronouncing it, it’s doesn’t make since but the p is silent so it’s pronounced drum core the way you are saying it is actually a dead human body English doesn’t make since I know I just cringe every time you say it with the P because it congers up a very different image in my head lol

Trap music...lol.. definitely not trap. I live in Atlanta, the birth home of Trap and hate it so much. It call it a jam session with weird dance choreography. lol.

  • @Drums-ve8on

Yes, they have many characteristics of a “band”, but this is a drum and bugle corps, marching percussion and brass ensemble, with a dance/gymnastic “color guard” which uses rifles, flags and other implements. A band it is not. However, your repeated comment of “what’s going on?” reflects how many feel about this era of drum corps in general and this performance in particular. The talent and performance skills are undeniable, but the entertainment factor is questionable at best. The only exception in this show is the finale, which brings simple musical and visual effects that are extremely entertaining to the average viewer.

I was lost too. I expected a DRUM corps and not a band performance. I didn’t even finish the video. The performance was a mess.
There are much better videos which feature only drums.

Theatre on the football field; Instead of there just being dancer that perform to the music the whole band participants creating art on the field. Seeing it live is beautiful. Watching the kids creating the sound in front of you is mindblowing. The musical piece is a brass piece called Journey to the Center of the Earth by Peter Graham. You can youtube it and watch the brass band play during a performance in a concert hall( not marching).
