    You should be counting even strokes for both sides to get an even bevel for each side

    A less steep angle provides a "working edge", which means you have to work harder for it to work. It also reduces rolling. My target angle is always 20 by the way.

    I was wondering how sharp should I get my neighbours' machete. Didn't know what edge to put on it. Contacted my friends in Australia who are professional machete users for clearing brush, vines and undergrowth. Their advice: depends on what you are clearing; for tall, grasses use a high flat bevel, razor sharp edge; for semi-woody (soft) vines and bushes use a medium convex bevel sharp edge; for woody (hard) bushes and small trees use a full convex bevel with a thin sharp edge. Using the wrong bevel and edge will not achieve the task at hand andwill be extremely frustrating. And, will wreck the blade. On any jobsite, my Aussie bros carries at least 5 differently sharpened machetes and backups to boot. My neighbour clears both tall grasses and semi-woody bushes on his property, so I sharpened accordingly. The results were amazing.
    Hope this helps your viewers. Your sharpening technique is amazing. Thanks! 🍁

    Leaving it sharpened with the file, get some more of a toothier edge for it to catch and penetrate more deeply rather than having the sharpest edge you can get up to 600 to 1000 grit using a file like that is probably at 350 to 450 grit that will allowed to grab more things and penetrate more deeply. so in a way, it is sharper than rather 1000 grit

      I have heard of that method before. When I’m sharpening on the back of my truck I usually just use a file. When I’m in the workshop, it’s anyone’s guess as to how far I’ll go! 😂
      Thank you for sharing!!

    With how hard I swing I gotta be careful not to go below 30 degrees while sharpening, I got chips 1/16th inch deep into my crkt halfachance blade and edge rolled on this martindale 28 inch blade I went 25-30 degrees too, So if you swing hard on some dryer bush thats been out in the sun you could chip or roll your edge going lower than 30 degrees in my opinion.

    I like this video !
    There are books written long ago by the Pike sharpening stone company
    Named
    How to sharpen and what to use !
    You can find them on the internet archive !
    I like the way you mounted the knife to your bench as if the machete is just a big knife !
    Which after all is what it is !
    A proper file does work perfectly fine to use as a sharpening tool !
    I even sometimes use a file to sharpen certain butcher knives !
    It all about the type of edge you want or need !
    A machete is not a straight razor !
    There is no need for it to be sharpened as if it was a straight razor !
    A machete needs a tough edge that can be touched up fast !
    And for that you can not beat a file !
    A file sharped will make you bleed if you were to rub on the blade
    What I am saying is !
    OH YES IT SHARP !
    I give you 5 stars ! And a ATTABOY :)

    If your trying to get that hospital visit sharp get a piece of 800 grit sand paper or 1000 grit and wrap it around some flat and do the same movement with the file it’s gonna be hospital visit sharp

    I like my machetes nice and sharp too. I use 20 year old files but they work. They do slip at times but still have a lot of bite. I took a brass wire wheel to them when I got them, then oiled them.

      Having a file brush on standby is a must. Several videos I’ve seen people recommend buying a brand new file but unless it’s rusted to pieces I don’t understand the point of that.

    This is exactly how i sharpen my new blunt edges. Axes, machetes, swords and etc. 👍 i use a 2nd cut file. Files are underrated. They’re the very first step, before whetstones. Makes life much easier. Belt grinders change the edge way too much also, and a very ugly edge overall. and overheat the blade as well.

    Axe Puck work great on blunt dull edges of stainless steel knives ☝️ And Sharpening Files work great on dull blunt edges on high carbon steel machetes and swords ☝️ Afterwards, then you may start using diamond stones on stainless steel knives. And use whetstones or oilstones on high carbon steel machetes and swords ☝️

    Hi. Thanks for the video. What grit is the file? Or what grit do you think is best for a macete?

    • @John5.56
      @John5.56 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s a file, I don’t think it’s measured in grit unless I haven’t been paying attention for a very long time lol. Any standard bastard file will work fine, just choose whatever size you feel most comfortable using. I’d just suggest doing a tiny bit of research, there are different types of files. Some only cut on the push stroke and some only cut on the pull. So just know what you’re getting

    the easiest way to sharpen a machete is just to use a grinder with the soft sandpaper disc. its faster,better and saver.

    • @soloproject99
      @soloproject99  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's actually not true. A grinder, if in the wrong hands, can transfer a lot of heat into such a thin blade. Too much heat can ruin whatever tempering the steel has. Yes, its faster but I can't agree with you on it being better.

    • @John5.56
      @John5.56 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely faster, that’s about it tho
