- In this tutorial I show you a trick for how to remove adhesive wall hooks that have no tab without ripping a chunk of your drywall off in the process. This is a simple and pretty quick way to do that. Great tip especially if you live in a rental and would like to get your deposit back!
Most Command Brand Hooks come with a tab at the bottom that you pull when it's time to remove and helps prevent this problem. However, many of the Dollar Tree and less expensive brands don't have this tab. This tip will help you save money in the long run as there is a significant price difference between the Command and off brand. Hopes this helps and come back for more helpful home DIY solutions!!
my wife asked - I googled - watched half of your guide - did the job - it worked - thank you
Haha I’m glad I made your wife happy with you! 😀
Excellent solution. I used this to get a sticky mounting thing off a painted metal surface. Used the plastic spatula and it removed the mount without scratching the paint. Yes, patience is required, but it works as presented! Thanks!
That's great to hear-glad it worked for you!
thank God there's a way to take these off omg. I got the same ones from dollar tree and realized they're not like command strips. you saved me from getting my butt whooped :')
Haha, that's great to hear!
I did this today! It worked perfectly! And no residue left... smooth clean wall! I can't believe that I didn't Google this earlier after looking at these hooks on the wall for 2yrs!
Thank you! I got the same kind of Dollar Tree hooks and realized after I got home that they don't have tabs. (The other ones I've bought there always did, so I didn't look too closely.) I haven't put them up yet because I was worried about this being an issue one day, but now I don't have to worry about trying to return them or spending more money when I'm between jobs. Much appreciated!
LOVED YOUR VIDEO AS SOON AS I SAW THE HAIR DRYER ! Hair dryer also works wonders if you enjoy privacy before throwing away those amber medication bottles 💕
This is great. Thank you. I did have to clean residue off my granddaughters bedroom wall when they were moving. I didn’t have anything to use. So I thought maybe a hot wet cloth. I used a thick old washcloth and held it against the adhesive for about 15 seconds. The cloth was hot and very wet. Then I just rubbed it with the cloth and it came off in a few seconds. It made a hard job so easy.
so glad it helped! and that's a great idea with the wash cloth
Just what I needed. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this very useful guide. Came off with ease, and no damage.
Love this. Dollar tree “command” hooks STAY up better than the Command brand! Command used to be awesome
Thankyou so much for this video! I have two similar plastic hooks that were on the wall when we bought the house. I'm now going to tackle this with confidence!
You’re the REAL MVP.. thank you for this! I was stressed out 😂😂😂 it worked like a charm!!!
Yay! 😃 super glad I alleviated your stress 🙌
You definitely earned my like. Excellent video
This video is the best one I saw! Thank you!
Thank you I have one where the bottom thingy broke I will try your idea.
I NEEDED THIS HELP!! TY FOR SHARING!! 😊🙏💕💐💃
So glad!
I accidentally bought these instead of the ones with the tabs when I went to a different dollartree than the one near my house. I used them to hang garland around my doors and rafters before realizing 😖. Now I have to get them down without my husband becoming aware of my mistake lol
same here....
Worked like a charm!
Incredibly helpful -Thankyew!!
I have hard yellow residue left on window sill where we had hook holding glassware. How do we get the yellow residue off? Thanks!
Hi, sorry this is late. I used "Goo Gone" to remove the left over adhesive. I would just be careful and do a test in a hidden area so you don't ruin the surface-good luck!
The best advice so far!
Thanks! it was a relief when it worked for me too!
Just tried this and it worked, thank you SO much!!!
So glad it helped!
Thank you ! Worked a treat 😀
Thank you so much for this hack!!!
Thank you. Will try this
After removing the hook with this method can it be reused??
It didn’t melt the plastic hook for me so if you can apply another adhesive sticker I think it’s definitely possible to reuse the hook
I’m such an idiot for putting mine so high up… my hairdryer’s cord isn’t long enough 😭😭 Thanks for the tip though!! I’m off to get an adapter cable 💪
You are amazing!!! Thank you very much 🙂
You're welcome 😊
Hi, any idea how to remove self-adhesive (net curtain) hooks from a plastic window frame?
you might try it on the lowest setting, maybe test it so first to make sure it doesn't melt the plastic window frame but otherwise, I don't know-sorry
Will this work on glass? I didn’t read the fine print that it can’t be applied on glass. 🤦🏻♀️
@@alannayee I’m not sure because I’ve never tried it. But I have used a blow dryer to remove price stickers from glass so I would think it should be ok. My main concern would be the tool and so you’d probably have to be extra gentle so you don’t crack the glass. Definitely use a plastic one for that. Good luck!
@ Happy new year and thanks so much! Just happened to see your comment now and coincidentally the hook just fell off on its own this morning (wreath may have been too heavy). It was hanging halfway off and the rest of the adhesive came right off and even separated from the hook. Great point about the tool, though!
great! thanks for sharing.
After detaching it from the wall how can we attach it again on another place..... 😊 It would help me more i guess.
They sell Command strips that have adhesive on one side and a very strong Velcro type thing on the other side. They are called wall hanging strips
@@74Emm thank you very much....
Does this work if the hook is on a wooden door? 😢
I would imagine so. I think as long as you don't have the blow dryer on high you should be fine
How about if it's high on the wall and the blow drier can't reach it
@@marytes3758 extension cord? You gotta do what you gotta do to get them off especially if the alternative is tearing a chunk off the wall which would be way more hassle to repair than finding an extension cord and a stool to get up there
Why on low and not on high, though? I’m figuring if a little heat is good, more heat is better / faster?
you can try high heat at your own risk lol. I didn't want to risk the high heat damaging the wall or anything
Thank you very much 💯
It’s really helpful my friend.. thanks for sharing..
Thank you 🙏🏻
Thanks
PERFECT! THANK YOU!!!!! ; D
I saw someone remove the goo from double sided tape with duct tape. Do you think that will work for this if I don’t have goo gone?
Do you mean remove the goo with duct tape or double sided tape? I'm not sure if that would work, but if it's a wall your trying to remove the sticky stuff from I might try something like baby oil first, but only if your wall paint has some kind of sheen-like satin or semi gloss finish-not flat paint. Hope this helps!
@@74Emm Remove goo with duct tape. Ok, I guess I'll see, thanks!
Hot ou warm air?
I used it on low heat. I would just be careful not to go too high and damage the wall
Don't have a hairdryer, what to do?
No idea but if you factor in the cost of the alternative (losing a rent deposit or the cost of having to repair damaged walls to include spackle and paint) a $10-$20 blow dryer is probably worth it- especially if you have several of these on your walls
I tried this and it did not work. The paint has ripped of the wall, im gonna get killed by my mom…
Sorry for the late reply. I'm just going to answer for others here as you might not need this tip anymore. The only way I can think of that you may have ripped the wall with this method is if you tried to pull off the hook before the adhesive was completely melted off the wall. In other words, instead of letting it come off on its own-you pulled on it before it was completely detached from the wall. I did warn about that in the video btw
i don't have a hairdryer
Update… I used a steam iron. It worked great!!! Iron on highest heat and steam the adhesive, hold it really close to the wall but not enough to damage the wall for about 10-20 sec . The adhesive will come right off.

I yelled at my wife not to use this crap anymore. I've told her before that I didn't like these products and it creates work for me if the adhesive doesnt come off smoothly and take a piece of drywall paper off. It's a pain to to fix it.
That is not a "spatula" it is not a cooking utensil, that is called a putty knife. Never waste your money on those plastic disposable ones, the real ones are made of steel and only cost a dollar or two more and will last.
It's called a putty knife, not a spatula.
Too bad about that awful high hat racket noise in background. I lasted barely a minute, I couldn’t handle it.
Sorry to hear- I'm not a video producing expert. This video was meant to help keep you from damaging your wall and possibly save you headaches and money. (By the way, there is a mute button and captions option) :)
