Just want to pin this here:
I will not be continental knitting, ONLY English knitting. I am left handed, so when I crochet my yarn is fed through my right hand, same as English knitting and that is the easiest way to knit for me. Thank you for your suggestions though! :D

I’m a lefty too and haven’t been able to figure out continental knitting, even with left handed videos so I 100% understand the struggle! Maybe if I ever get decent enough to make more than a lopsided rectangle I’ll give it another try 🤣

I can do both- not good continental, but I can do both.
I use continental when I want to adjust for knitting to a quicker way, or when I do fairisle. (I'm an intermediate knitter)

Lmao this reminds me of when I was binge watching knitting vids and waiting for needles to come in the mail... I was absolutely attempting it with chop sticks and horrible cotton yarn I had for crafts 🤪 my husband still thinks I'm crazy. But in the end it worked out... you did really well! You'll be a knit master in no time!

I’ve crocheted for almost 10 years and I’ve knit for about 8…I love how fast crochet works up but I just prefer the look of knitting, especially on clothing. Fair isle work is my favorite but oh man, it makes me angry sometimes. You’ll start to learn/“read” how the stitches look and your projects will work up a lot faster. Good luck on your journey! Knitting is fun :)

I've crocheted for basically my whole life and only picked up knitting last month. I love both for different things cause I pretty much only crochet toys as I don't like the texture in clothing, but I picked up knitting for the clothing. ngl i adore watching people learn new things cause it puts my own experience into perspective. Instead of making little swatches as you did, I immediately jumped in and made some socks (two pairs) and now I'm on my first sweater.
if you're going to make clothing I highly highly recommend making a gauge swatch since that'll determine what yarn/needle size fits the size you want to achieve. there's a lot of different videos on making gauge swatches, and the process is different depending on whether you knit flat or in the round. I knit and blocked three separate swatches for my first sweater before settling on a needle size smaller than was recommended and had to go up two sizes on the sweater to get the correct fit.
I'm really excited to see what you decide to knit!

    • @knitwithkali
      @knitwithkali  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh wow, I can't imagine just jumping in right away without learning all the basics first, haha.
With clothing, I don't gauge anything when crocheting since usually whatever I make is fairly oversized anyway. So if it's smaller than what I wanted, it will fit me well and if it's bigger than what I wanted, I'll still love it since I love oversized clothing.
With knitting, I will go about the same way just to see if I can still apply those same tactics and then decide if I want to gauge or not. Thank you for the suggestions!

I do both, but I like to Knit more. I've been knitting for 3 yrs now, but when I started it took me 2 weeks straight of knitting to ease up my tension, and to not drop stitches. I would start with Chunky yarn on bamboo needles while starting out, youll have a better hold of your stitches unlike with metal. Trust me it makes a big difference. Later on metal is great. Also,, by using chunky you can make a Hat in a couple of hours.. A Scarf in a day. It kept me from quitting knitting cause i felt like i was accomplishing something. found it easier to just do the Garter Stitch and stockinette on Scarves and Hats. Once you've mastered your tension and aren't dropping stitches then I'd move on to a big project like a sweater, otherwise you'll be frogging a bunch. These are just suggestions of things that worked for me, everyone learns differently. I hope it helps🙂

knitting for sure hurts my hands more than crochet, so make sure to stretch them every thirty minutes or so. You did an awesome job learning so fast :) Knitting might seem more complicated, but it's really just the same two stitches combined in different ways.

I crochet and knit. I love them equally. But it does depend on what I want to make. I would never knit another blanket, not if I want to use it in this lifetime. 😄 I knitted a baby blanket once and I thought I would NEVER finish! In general I like the look of knitted garments better, but their are some crochet designers ( yourself included) who are taking crochet designs to another level and they look amazing. I think it’s a special talent to take crochet and make it look high end. There’s a new crochet magazine called MOORIT and the designs I’ve seen from it are amazing!

girl - i tried knitting but i could never get the tension the same - it took forever to work up and was just all round frustrating to me.
who know - i might try again now that i am older - but i first want to get established here on YT as a crocheter and then i can broaden my horizons after that

I've knitted for years and recently picked up crochet. So here's my 2 cents, hopefully I can make sense over text.
So study your stich and how it's formed. You can see that purl stitches are just the backside of a knit stitch. Knit formes the V and purl makes the bumpy side.
So when you are doing ribbing and don't know if you should purl or knit look at the stitch below the one you are on. If it is a V knit to make another V, if it is bumpy then purl.
I really hope that makes sense!

It’s so funny to hear you say knitting is harder than crocheting, because I learnt to knit first and I find I can mindlessly do it and really enjoy that. But I find crocheting so hard because you have to count stitches so often, and there’s so much to learn (so many different stitches!!) 😂
Also I learnt knitting from my school teacher but crocheting from only videos so I feel like that made a difference

    • @knitwithkali

I don’t know if this will help you, but the knit stitch looks like a V and the purl stitch looks like two bars slightly overlapping on either side ( if that makes sense.) I find knowing this especially useful when working ribbing.
I am a crocheter and a knitter. And I can’t decide which one I like better. But I love knitting because knitted garments use less yarn and don’t feel as thick. But crocheting is so much fun!

I both knit and crochet. Knitting has a better drape but crochet works up faster. What the item is going to be use for determines which one I will use. It takes time but I learn to knit first at age ten but my mother was a left-handed crocheter so I picked up on it as a teen. I now crochet more because the hooks were safer around children and I design a lot of household items like rugs and mixed media wall hangings.

As someone who started out with crochet and then started knitting, I really recommend continental knitting! Basically with the continental style you hold the yarn in your left hand (like when you crochet), rather than holding the yarn in the right hand (which is called the English style). There are many different styles of knitting on both the continental and English side of things, so I’d definitely recommend checking it out! Rj Knits made a video on continental style, I believe it’s called ‘speed knitting’ on his channel. Hope this helps, good luck :)

    • @knitwithkali

You did so well! at 21:00 you were talking about a stitch at the back that looked a little weird. It looks like you accidentally didn't knit it and just slipped it onto the next needle. If so, when you count the stitches from the bottom to the top, that row will have one stitch (v) less then the other rows. If that makes sense? Can't wait to see your future knit projects! :)

When you make swatches like you did when knitting back and forth instead of in circles, both the swatch of the knit stitch and the purl stitch will look exactly the same! This is because a purl stitch is just the knit stitch seen from the back. If you want to see what it really look like, you should alternate which stitch you use on each row: knit - purl - knit and so on :)

I don’t own chopsticks, and I had already ordered needles which were coming the next day, so I didn’t need to rush to get some. I just used what I had for the time being, lol. And thank you!

I'm a knitter who started crocheting in January 2020 and I found crochet harder than knitting (I'm still slower at crochet than knitting :) )
