The letter "J" does not exist in Hebrew, never has so "jesus" cannot be his name. Why does that matter? "By His NAME we are Saved" and "jesus" is not it...

There’s a certain something that’s basic yet profound that happens between a man and woman that work together to provide their needs. Bless you two for being so much one. The blessing of memories will set a life long tone of well-being through working/playing together. God bless you for reminding this old man of how close my wife and I grew together working side by side. Tears of joy. Thank you. Thank you.

well, all i can say is that if there is a real food shortage, elks and deers are by far not the biggest problem we will have. Humans become terrible when confronted with hunger. And they are capable of doing anything to get food. I lived through unbelievable harsh and strong experiences in Venezuela and in two different countries in Africa, and I can tell you, it is no joke. So let us hope that all comes to the best, and that even if there is shortage, that it will not create panic, and specially that we can pass trough this period of life on Earth with our heads held high with love, compassion and intelligent decisions. Bless you lovely family. Take care.

Just a tip: we have a lot of deer here. I used to have an 8 foot fence around my garden. They would jump it and eat everything. So if you find they are jumping your fence, the only way I have been able to completely keep them out is a single strand of electric fence. Deer do NOT like to jump horizontal. They jump vertical. So if you place 1 strand of electric 36 inches from your fence and 18 inches high. They will not get in. When they try to snuggle up to the high fence to jump it, they hit the electric before they get there. I hopd you don't need this but its cheap and effective if you do. Enjoy developing your homestead.

I have dealt with our little coastal deer for decades. I found i never had to hook up an electric fence and kept the deer out for 34 years! I put up elec wire and flagged it with construction flagging and it has worked for decades. They see the flagging and stay out! Crazy but it works.

Awesome land. My wife and I were talking about this garbage yesterday and we realized no matter if we have food and guns, we need a community to keep surveillance 24/7. Can’t expect my wife and boys to stand guard and pull shifts all the time. Like Negan said in TWD, people are a resource. Get to know your neighbors because bugging out is always the last resort.

I apologize if this has already been suggested. It is really simple to keep smaller critters out of that space, not really cheap but simple. Get some hardware cloth, attach it to your lower cross beams, bend it 90° at the dirt, pin it down. When I put this in I just raked some dirt away from the fence and after pinning just pulled the dirt back over it.

Orchard, with a permaculture twist, adding numerous edible perrenial guilds to each poineer tree in a silvopasture, rotational paddock system between each contour. Perrenials are easier to work with and require less effort than annuals, so maybe research all the edible perennials in your area and lock those in with your fruit/nut/nitrogen fixing trees/shrubs, vines, herbs, roots. 😁

I even made a little cradle to support the wood by the ends of the tailgate and hold the saw in place to keep it from sliding around on the tailgate.

Great ;looking fence. I would suggest that at some point you put a couple of feet of chicken wire from the bottom of your fence down into the ground, especially where you have large gaps. Two to three feet down and a bend at the bottom will generally deter the rabbits etc from entering. Great sized garden. I look forward to watching it progress. Stay safe!

Y'all are such an inspiration to me, and of course to others. Both of you think so very much like I do about life in general, about homesteading, and about "making it happen." Love that spirit! We have endured well over 30 inches of rain here so far this year on my 20 acres in Jackson, Mississippi so if I waited on dry weather, not much would get done around here! At least you seem to have drier dirt to plant a garden in. I used raised beds primarily for my organic gardening which helps a lot but it still been incredibly muddy just walking around in the garden.

It would be nice to work out something to get the dirt turned up & amended for planting sooner. I have chainlink fencing completely enclosing the entire garden installed PVC pipe on the chainlink top installed sprinklers and I should have run PVC along the beds for soakers but used two hoses one for each side. Went back and made raised beds in a stepping up sections. On one side I shaded 3/4ths up the side. My unique situation is the heat in AZ(105 -115) at times that can really affect the garden. Early morning I would use the above sprinklers like it was raining and then used the hose to flood the beds. I harvested more than I would ever eat so traded for things that I needed including my first 4-5yrs killing 16 -20 rattlesnakes or shared with the fire dept for removing Gila Monsters and some of the snakes. I am so glad that I am following you so that I can relive my life that is now gone. Being disabled and using a walker I can't maneuver through the beds. It seems that there's no kids old enough to help & handyman wants an large amount of money. The one bad thing about living so far out & 68. Figuring other ways to have a few veggies, herbs & melons planted.
You two are an inspiration and I commend you for sticking to your project in good or bad weather! Proves how strong your determination to build this piece of land into your home. Looking forward to watching your progress!!

Keeping the looks and if you want to keep out the little critters attach chicken wire to the bottom rail and bury it in the ground, if you go out from the fence 300mm plus, it also keeps out the digging critters too. That's what we had to do around our chicken coop to keep wild dogs and foxes out

*It's not food shortages; it's the DISTRIBUTION of food that's becoming a problem.* The US creates, and has pretty much always created, PLENTY of food *(just look at how much food is WASTED in this country!);* what's happening now is that the lockdowns are starting to drastically affect the supply chains that get the food from the producers, to the stores. Empty shelves don't mean food isn't being produced; it means food can't get to the stores as it should, on schedule. That's why more and more states are moving towards re-opening; the longer this continues, the more problems there will be. Within another month or so, I believe the lockdowns will be drastically reduced; we're already seeing signs of this in Florida and Georgia... as well as states like the Dakotas. The restrictions need to be lifted where it makes sense to do so (in other words, where the illness has slowed or been reduced), so that people can start to go back to work - and the supply chains can be restarted again. NO ONE knows how long all of that's going to take... *but I believe we need to be moving in that direction. Which is one reason why Melissa and Jeremy picked the PERFECT time to get out of Washington state, and start their homestead; moving away from the areas of higher cases of COVID-19 (as WA State is right now) protects their family, as well as positions them to insulate against a lot of the stuff going on right now. And, by the time things start to stabilize, they will be more settled into their new lifestyle, still homeschooling, still raising their own food... and developing their property! I wish more people were in that position!*

I hope I'm strong enough to do the same as I transition to my homestead. I've already had people try to talk me out of some of the things I really want. I hope I can follow your lead, and do things how I want.

That welded wire is good for the deer and what not, but I'd dig a trench about 12 inches deep between the post holes and run a fine 1/2" welded wire about 36" in width to keep the smaller critters out, and have it be one foot below ground level and the other two feet above it.
One hot wire mounted about 18" up will keep the raccoons, Opossums and any other climbing critters out as well. Here in the Illinois Suburbs, it's the rabbits, Voles, Tree squirrels and even 13 lined ground squirrels that devastate everything, even shredding a small Blueberry bush I just planted!

Get 2 foot chicken wire. Attach it 6 inches up on outside of fence. Let the other 18 inches lay flat on the ground. The grass will grow up through it and hold it all in place. That what I did years ago never had anything dig under it. I had my grass cut really short almost to bare ground before I put my wire down.

I like the idea of the electric fence, wherever it needs to be situated. Solar charger is what we are looking into. Our little raised bed unit has a six foot fence, but the top is capped. When we expand, an electric fence is a must! You have your priorities in good order!

Find some thorny berry bushes to plant along the fence to get both natural barbed wire but also a long area to pick berries. You will also provide a large amount of food for bees so good for any local hives and if you start bees yourself. That they are so easy to clone by putting the end of a branch into a pot of soil helps to quickly get enough plants to cover all the fence. It can also help to select types that ripen at different times to spread out the harvest and when they are flowering.
One of those cheap 10x10 canopy help give you a dry spot to work from in the rain for a cutting station. Need to work on the truck in the rain? put the canopy over it to give you a dry spot to work. Digging a hole in the rain? canopy over it to help keep the rain from turning the hole into muck. Need to work in the sun in the middle of summer? canopy over the work area to have some shade. The feet have spots to drive in rebar or a landscape spike so some protection from the wind trying to take it.
