Mario in my books will always be the greatest player to have ever played. No disrespect to Wayne and others. Mario is the best one on one player to have ever played.
I feel so very lucky and blessed to be able to watch all of these guys play. Each one representing the pinnacle of the sport in their own time. Their humility and mutual respect is refreshing to see.
Growing up in the 70's there wasn't a lot of indoor rinks to play our games on. Our league rented the Met Center in Bloomington almost every Saturday and Sunday morning so I knew my way around that building really well. I ended up at Game 6 in 1991 when the Penguins won it. After the on ice trophy presentation, I walked to the door on the main concourse level that headed downstairs to the Penguin locker room area. A young lady was guarding that door and as I approached it and she asked me if I had a family member on the team, of course I said yes. Down the stairs I went and ended up exactly outside the Penguin locker room as they were drinking champagne out of the Cup. Every member of that team ended up outside that locker room to do tv interviews or to get away for a few minutes and celebrate with family members that ended up down there. I shook hands with almost everyone on that team. Of course the highlight was personally congratulating Mario, Barasso, Jagr, Badger Bob and a couple of other players. After about 45 minutes of celebrating, Mario announced loudly "Listen up, get dressed, and let's get to the bus", everyone listened and stopped celebrating. The guy in charge of the Cup brought it over to the case it was stored in (A big wooden crate on wheels). He gave me a couple of minutes to personally check it out as he was cleaning the Conn Smyth Trophy before he put that in it's case. Great moment
When the two greatest players of all time Gretzky and Orr keep bringing up your dominance and look giddy while doing it, you know you are the best player of all time. That player is Mario Lemieux.
@@irmadisimone2963 Mario Lemieux had Hodgkin's disease (cancer) and back problems in his late twenties so you can't really compare their whole careers.
I watched this very special video with a smile on my face the whole time. What better time could a person who loves the game have than to watch the greatest players play.
Orr did it all with one good leg folks. If he didn't have the barbaric knee surgeries of that time and went a full 14 seasons, I don't think there'd be an argument on who's the best overall player in hockey. There'd be an argument on who's after him.
if we take all injuries away and pretend players play full careers at their peak capacity i would have trouble naming Orr 1st not because of Gretzky,Lemieux or Howe. Peter Forsberg was Orr on offense.Unstoppable.
When I was a kid at 12 years old went up to Canada to play hockey and it was a culture shock. There was an outdoor rink on every block in Toronto. Everybody quite hockey
If Gretz, Mario and Bobby were on the ice- together , opponents would not even get a chance to handle the puck....any era, any group of players included. They seldom gave up the puck, especially with Orr in the mix. Athletes always perform best playing against the best, these three would have been just as dominant in today's game.
I watched most of Wayne Gretzky's career and all of Mario's carer and there is no doubt in my that gratz and Mario and would still be topping 160 and 180 points today nothing against today's pliers but there was more creativity then even though the goalies are better
This was produced a few years back. Obviously, an all-Canadian panel. Now that Ovi is #2 in goals, and looking like he will pass Gretzky of course, it makes sense to include him. There were no goalies either, stopping goals isn't as interesting as scoring them in the eye of the general public. Russian born players are some of my favorite though. Ovi, not so much, but Datsuk, Fedorov, Bure, Mogilny, even Kovalev and Malkin.
Crosby is likely too mechanically skilled for most people in the 80's, but he would have struggled with Gretzky, Orr and Lemieux in career stats. Virtually everyone at that table including Toews would have done great in the 80's because of how talented they all actually are. The actual question is, would have Gretzky, Orr and Lemieux been able to get such massive career records today... I think they would have had records more like Crosby and Ovi. I don't think they are as mechanically gifted, but they were skilled and talented as they come, giving me the impression that they would have been the top players overall. It is impossible to say they would have dominated as much as they did though, the skill gap is closed even for Sid and he is probably one of the most talented people to ever touch the game ever. I'm just glad they all played in different eras because the sport is defined by legacy, it's not really that important that the competition was easier or harder, so much as it was the legends who stood out and lead the sport into greatness. I never got to watch Gretzky and Lemieux, sure would have loved to, but I was too young.
look, Gretzky is clearly the smartest player ever, but crosby is in discussion for number two- and hes a winner. and crosby is a strong strong skater if not the fastest.
I think it was pointed out by all the guys, especially Mario, that the dedicated players with the talent would adapt. If you look at Michael Jordan, he was a supreme talent, but was getting pushed around by the Detroit pistons early in his career, so he bulked up to compete. Creativity reigned in the 80's and 90's because not everyone was a great skater, the game allowed for it. Now, everyone can skate better, so the really dominant players like MacKinnon and McDavid just kick it up a notch higher. Even Crosby in his earlier years (still today to some extent) was a beast down low in the offensive zone with the puck. Changing direction on a dime and leaving defenders hung out to dry. The best players find a way to be a step ahead given the conditions.
Proud to call toews my favorite player and captain of my favorite team. I will never forget those cup runs. Now they have Bedard and some other young guys that remind me of Kane and toews and big buff. A young, hungry team with a new generational talent. Reichel, Bedard, Moore, Nazar and Korchinski are going to be fun to watch for years to come. I hope they retire #88 and #19 they deserve it.
well clearly Orr is the greatest defenseman ever-there is no discussion there. and hes one of the best two way players ever- I'm not saying gretzky, mario etc were liabilities on defense, but I'm not gonna question those who say mario. his ie had a quality all its own (BY THE WAY what in Jnoantha T doing in sam room ? great player, but this guys are the goats.
Someone should get Gretz, Mario, Orr, Crosby and McDavid to do this "again" but in a podcast where there are no constraints of the legacy media. Even then it'd largely be polite platitudes but I'm sure they'd open up more if it was two hours instead of 20 minutes.
I dunno, I’ve seen every interview those guys have done and I’ve never seen any of them say anything even a little bit interesting. Except Mario, he’s more genuine.
