In this episode we explore the abandoned city of Kayaköy in Fethiye, Turkey. This town was abandoned suddenly in 1923 and we have been fascinated to find out why?
The thing that really surprised us was just how vast this place was. We could have hiked all day and only just reached the other side.
This is a MUST visit if you are traveling to Fethiye anytime soon.

5:44 There’s a lot of wrong information about the historic stuff. When you say 1923 to a Turk, yes, the people exchange of Greek and Turkey will pop up to their mind which is connected to the treaty of Lausanne made by Europeans and has caused a lot of political issues in Turkey concerning the Kurdish for example.
Anyways, basically Anatolian Greeks & Asian Turks had to leave their homes from 1919-1923. 1923 is one of the last arrivals. Western people sometimes interpret this story in a very Eurocentric manner. Yes, Christian Greeks left their home of centuries (in Anatolia and the Aegean of cities like Sivas, Trabzon, Ayvalik) for todays Greek. Muslim Turks left their home of centuries (todays Greek mainland & the islands like Crete, Saloniki, Lesvos, Corfu) for mainly the Aegean part & Istanbul.
But what is not seen by Eurocentric thinkers is that among the Christian population that had to move around there are a lot of ethnically Turkish people that became Christian to stay with their Greek partners for example or converted because they didn’t want to leave their home. But also many that were Christian anyway.
There are many such ignored details :)
