How to Move a Site to a New Host Using cPanel

- In this tutorial I show you how to backup and move a site using cPanel. This tutorial will work with just about any type of site... It can be a Magento store such as the one I'm moving in the video, or a Wordpress blog or any other type of site.
I cover how to move files using the file manager and how to backup and restore a MySQL database.
The only thing to keep in mind, is the fact that you may need to change your configuration file after making the move. I explain this in the video.

Thanks for taking the time to put this up. Worked like a champ! I modified it a little. I took my main site files and database and cloned them to a test subdomain on the same host. I created a new database and imported the live database into the new test db. I had the ability to add the live DB user account to my new database so I didn't have to change anything but the new database name. My configuration differed from yours. I had to modify configuration.php rather than local.xml for Joomla, but all I had to do was change the DB Name. Everything else was very similar. Thanks again!

Everything works great. The error was on my part. Site is working perfect. All the information you provided was correct, easy to follow and accurate... I didn't listen and watch close enough the first time while watching the video. I was trying to do more than one thing at a time. So sorry I didn't correct this post. Your instructions are PERFECT. Just a word of advise to people on TH-cam making a website, Don't DRINK and start changing stuff on your WP, lol
+clevmartin Yes drinking can always make things seem a bit more difficult :) Thanks for coming back and letting everyone know things worked out. I figured that you did things right since you actually got to see the log in screen. If your entire site was down, it would have been a different story. Either way, WP sites are some of the easiest sites to move.

I seriously don't know anything about web page design let alone website migration and thanks to your video, I managed to move my website to a new host. I didn't need to do the user credential part - thank god coz that bit was a bit scary for me . The only problem I faced was my website was no longer linked to my Instagram account. Now I'll try to figure that out too. Thank you so much once again!
Great video, one question though, when people are on my website does it now pull the information from both the host's? or do I just need to update my domain nameservers?

One quick question for you: if I'm using this process to move from one web host to another (with the intention of cancelling my original web hosting account that I'm migrating my sites away from), won't I also need to add the domain for the site I just migrated to my cPanel account as an AddOn domain?
And shouldn't I then change the nameservers for the domain in question, too - if the domain was purchased via a third party domain name provider (rather than via either of my web hosts)?

@Lisa Franklin for some reason I can't reply to your comment. The site which I backed up wasn't that big. I don't know how long it would take 50 gigs of data to backup but from what I've read, it's recommended to keep the browser open while it compresses but I don't know how factual that statement is. You can always try to backup and close and then see whether everything was backed up by downloading and opening the compressed file on your computer.

I'm having trouble even getting started. The word press templates always seems diff when I add them to use. I.e....my background image always covered by a white from page. And then im not sure how to add pages onto my menu tabs...like I'd create a menu tab named library....so when I click library I can work my way through loads of posts etc but not sure how to do that. Is there a tutorial? On how to use cpanel word press
so I download DB and public_html.zip, I have 4 sites in public_html.zip, how do I upload just the one that I need?

I manage to install a backup plugin but haven't tried it yet..
what's the best option for this?
Andres Cadungog It depends on where those plugins are located but in very rare cases will you find that data separate.
So if they are located in the directory which you're saving, then the plugins will be included. Since most plugins also contain MySQL data, the MySQL data associated with those plugins will also be saved as long as the MySQL data is in the same database.

Hi can I use this method to make a backup of my Wix site? Wix sites cant be backed up yet
Is Wordpress the only website I can transfer web hosting? I know that I cant with wix because their server is exclusive, I think square space is the same. Not sure about Weebly? can you confirm or deny this? Thank you!

Hi, I Tried this steps, but, for same reason does not work. When I try to acess the domain, eather the domain/admin does not open, instead of it download a file in my PC. (admin when I try to acess admin, and dowload.file when I try to acess the main page). Any help? Thanks

I haven't studied this whole video but have a question. If CPanel is software on a web host, how does it switch itself over? Does one log in to the new host and reboot CPanel?
Robert Pearson It doesn't. Your new hosting account or server has to have Cpanel on it.

Masta Chris Hello glad somethings worked. It seems like your memory level is too low. Try raising the memory_limit in your php.ini file.

Tommy Chong This depends on whether you are receiving an error. Maybe you haven't updated your Magento configuration properly. I'd also make sure that the database tables and files were moved correctly.

Mai Crompton Thanks for watching the video. The steps are the same for multiple domains. Only issue I can see is that your web hosting account may need to be setup a certain way to work with the programs or CMSs which you are hosting.
use filezilla for uploading
he got missing... you need to add domain and change your dns before it works everything. without changing dns and addon domain it wont work.

+clevmartin With WordPress, it could be as simple as deleting your cookies and browser cache if you can't log in. Either way it's best to understand the process of moving the site fully prior to proceeding with the move. Best way to do it, is to move the site but not take the original down. Test the new site and once you see that it's working properly, take down the original. Note that the server settings on your new site might not be setup right.

+clevmartin If everything else is working on your Wordpress site, just try clearing your browser cache and cookies because this is usually the cause of Wordpress login issues after moving a site.

Quite often you will need to edit the config.php file in WordPress' root folder.
WARNING: Go daddy makes you believe you are migrating to a new hosting
server, but all they do is pointing your domain to a new account. The
new server stays empty. Stay away from Godaddy! i have dealt with this

My Cpanel doesn't have a backup icon or a backupwizard icon why is that?

contact your hosting provider. majority of the times hosting company disable this option because backup consumes extra resources.
